The inner Northern Apennines belt (i.e., northern Tyrrhenian Sea and Tuscany) is an Alpine chain affectedby high-P metamorphic conditions during its evolution. Although Elba Island is structurally located closeto the Adria-Europe suture zone, for several authors it represents a sector of the orogen affected bylow-P metamorphism. The involvement of Elba Island tectonic units in high-P metamorphism was onlysuspected for the sparse presence of phengitic white mica in the metasedimentary rocks. This paperpresents the first clear evidence of high-P and low-T metamorphism found in metabasite rocks embed-ded in the Cretaceous calcschist of eastern Elba Island. Mineral composition of metabasite includesGln + Cpx + Ep + Ab + Act + Qtz + Ilm ± Ti-oxide ± Spn and is indicative of a former equilibration in the epi-dote blueschist subfacies and subsequent retrogression in the greenschist facies. Recorded metamorphicconditions are P = 0.9–1.0 GPa and T = 330–350◦C. Tectonic discrimination using immobile elements inthe metabasite does not point to an oceanic setting. As a consequence, the metasedimentary succes-sion containing metabasite is explained as belonging to the Tuscan continental domain and not to theLigurian-Piedmont Ocean, as previously interpreted. Our results have two significant implications: (i)it is confirmed and strengthened that the tectonic stacking of the Elba Island units did not occur in alow-pressure context; (ii) Elba Island is now completely reconciled in the tectonic and metamorphicevolution of the inner Northern Apennines

Relationship between People's Interest in Medication Adherence, Health Literacy, and Self-Care: An Infodemiological Analysis in the Pre- and Post-COVID-19 Era

The prevalence of non-communicable diseases has risen sharply in recent years, particularly among older individuals who require complex drug regimens. Patients are increasingly required to manage their health through medication adherence and self-care, but about 50% of patients struggle to adhere to prescribed treatments. This study explored the relationship between interest in medication adherence, health literacy, and self-care and how it changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used Google Trends to measure relative search volumes (RSVs) for these three topics from 2012 to 2022. We found that interest in self-care increased the most over time, followed by health literacy and medication adherence. Direct correlations emerged between RSVs for medication adherence and health literacy (r = 0.674, p < 0.0001), medication adherence and self-care (r = 0.466, p < 0.0001), and health literacy and self-care (r = 0.545, p < 0.0001). After the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, interest in self-care significantly increased, and Latin countries showed a greater interest in self-care than other geographical areas. This study suggests that people are increasingly interested in managing their health, especially in the context of the recent pandemic, and that infodemiology may provide interesting information about the attitudes of the population toward chronic disease management

Cirneco dell’Etna is an old Italian breed of scent hunting dogs. Commonly used genomic measures such as heterozygosity, fixation indexes, and runs of homozygosity can help to improve knowledge about its genetic diversity. This study aimed to: (i) investigate Cirneco’s genomic background, (ii) quantify its genomic inbreeding, and (iii) detect genomic regions differentiating the Cirneco’s two allowed coat colours, self-coloured fawn and tan and white. Canine 230K SNP BeadChips was used to investigate 24 Cirneco (19 self-coloured fawn, and 5 tan and white) and other 106 dogs from eight phylogenetically and historically related breeds. The genetic distance, ancestry, and relationship among breeds were explored by multidimensional scaling, Reynolds distances, phylogenetic tree, and admixture analysis. The genomic inbreeding (FROH) was calculated for each breed. Averaged Wright’s fixation index FST was used to identify the genes that most differentiated the two groups of Cirneco. All analyses highlighted that Segugio Italiano and Kelb tal Fenek are the closest breeds to Cirneco. Within the breed, tan and white subjects showed a more heterogeneous genetic background and a lower inbreeding in comparison with self-coloured fawn ones, even though more than half of the latter presented a superimposable admixture. The gene that most differentiated these two groups is Microphthalmia-Associated Transcription Factor (MITF), previously associated with white spotting in other breeds. Given the small size of the Cirneco population and its open registry, its management should carefully combine morphological and genealogical evaluations with genetic tools to identify the best breeders while maintaining an acceptable genetic pool.peer-reviewe

La disclosure volontaria del modello di business nel prospetto informativo di quotazione: un’analisi comparative

How do companies to be listed actually deal with voluntary disclosure of their business model? Is it true that firms with greater knowledge-based resources and technological innovation endowments have a lower propensity to adopt fully open communication behaviors? This paper aims to identify the voluntary disclosure policies adopted by three Italian companies in their Initial Public Offering (IPO) prospectuses in order to investigate whether any differences may depend on the type of innovation underlying each business model. A series of interviews conducted with the top management made it possible to understand more deeply the business model of each company. Further, a content analysis has been developed to compute a measure of disclosure and to point out the strategic concepts and their relevance. We provide evidence that companies with a business model based on technology-push innovation have a lower propensity to the full disclosure of their intangible components, particularly of those mainly based on knowledge as these are also invisible. Our study adds to the literature of business and financial reporting by focusing on a new object of inquiry, that is the business model. The business model plays an important role in allowing external actors to understand a company’s value, thus companies’ strategic communication should be shaped accordingly. The results suggest the need to address the issue of voluntary disclosure of the business model by first distinguishing “visible” intangible resources from those that are “invisible” (both to financial and competitive markets). The study aims to make a contribution to the ongoing debate on business and financial reporting practice

Methodological issues in the observational studies conducted in older population: a narrative review

    Get PDF
Introduction Well-conducted observational studies may represent valuable tools for getting insight to disease etiology, detecting the effect of age-related changes, and providing an important perspective on health risk factors and disabilities in an aging population. Nevertheless, this kind of research poses several challenges for researchers. The main aim of this narrative review was to address the potential methodological issues in performing the observational studies in the elderly, the factors that influence their participation, and the possible solutions for overcoming the barriers to research in this population. Methods Comprehensive search for the papers published in the period from January 1st 1980 until 31st July 2016 in English or Italian was conducted through MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science electronic databases. Findings from the included papers were finally summarized. Results In cohort studies, the following barriers were addressed: sample size calculation, ascertainment of the target population, frequency of data collection, exposure determination, multifactorial loss to follow-up (drop-outs), cognitive impairment, definition of confounders, and ethical aspects. Case-control studies were reported to be prone to the issues like ascertainment of cases and controls, willingness to participate, data accuracy, recall bias, issues related to patients’ multimorbidity, and cognitive impairment. Conclusions Important factors to consider in research in elderly people include: precise definition of the study population, well conducted recruitment process, engagement with family and home care staff, cognitive impairment assessment and the consequent relevant ethical and legal issues, relief of participant burden in order to minimize withdrawal, and engagement with the media
