Lead-free halide perovskite photovoltaics: Challenges, open questions, and opportunities
In recent years, lead-free metal-halide perovskite photovoltaics has attracted ever-growing attention, in view of its potential to replicate the outstanding properties of lead-halide perovskite photovoltaics, but without the toxicity burden of the latter. Despite a research effort much smaller in scale than that pursued with lead-based perovskites, considerable progress has been achieved in lead-free perovskite photovoltaics, with the highest power conversion efficiencies now being in the region of 13%. In this Perspective, we first discuss the state of the art of lead-free perovskite photovoltaics and additionally highlight promising directions and strategies that could lead to further progress in material exploration and understanding as well as in photovoltaic efficiency. Furthermore, we point out the widespread lack of experimental data on the fundamental optoelectronic properties of lead-free halide perovskite absorbers (e.g., charge carrier mobility, defect parameters, Urbach energy, and the impact of dimensionality). All of this currently hampers a rational approach to further improving their performance and points to the need for a concerted effort that could bridge this knowledge gap. Additionally, this Perspective brings to the fore the manifold photovoltaic opportunities—thus far largely unexplored with lead-free perovskite absorbers—beyond single-junction outdoor photovoltaics, which may potentially enable the realization of their full potential. The exploration of these opportunities (tandem photovoltaics, indoor photovoltaics, and building-integrated and transparent photovoltaics) could energize the investigation of existing and new classes of lead-free perovskite absorbers beyond current paradigms and toward high photovoltaic performance.</jats:p
Effect of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) on proliferation and apoptosis of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenoma cells
To understand whether hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) could protect AtT-20 cells from hypoxia induced apoptosis, we investigated the effects of HIF-1α on proliferation and apoptosis of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenoma cells (AtT-20 cells). AtT-20 cells were treated with various concentrations of CoCl2 to induce hypoxia. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide, a yellow tetrazole (MTT) was applied to detect the proliferation of these cells. Western blot assay and real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used to determine the protein and mRNA expressions of HIF-1α, respectively. In addition, AtT-20 cells were transfected with siRNA targeting HIF-1α and treated with different concentrations of CoCl2. The transfection efficacy was assessed by real-time PCR and western blot assay. Apoptosis was measured by fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-annexin V/ propidium iodide (PI) staining and TUNEL staining. The effect of CoCl2 on the proliferation of AtT-20 cells was in a concentration and time dependent manner. When the concentration of CoCl2 was ≤100 μM and/or duration of CoCl2 treatment was ≤48 h, CoCl2 triggered the proliferation of AtT-20 cells. Nevertheless, the apoptosis rate of cells transfected with HIF-1α-siRNA was markedly increased after CoCl2 treatment. These findings suggest that, HIF-1α can promote the proliferation of AtT-20 cells and exert anti-apoptotic effect under hypoxic condition.Key words: Hypoxia inducible factor–1α, cobalt chloride, apoptosis, pituitary adenom
Sleep quality in middle-aged and elderly Chinese: distribution, associated factors and associations with cardio-metabolic risk factors
Background
Poor sleep quality has been associated with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and mortality. However, limited information exists on the distribution and determinants of sleep quality and its associations with cardio-metabolic risk factors in Chinese populations. We aimed to evaluate this in the current study.
Methods
A cross-sectional survey conducted in 2005 of 1,458 men and 1,831 women aged 50–70 years from urban and rural areas of Beijing and Shanghai. Using a questionnaire, sleep quality was measured in levels of well, common and poor. Comprehensive measures of socio-demographical and health factors and biomarkers of cardio-metabolic disease were recorded. These were evaluated in association with sleep quality using logistic regression models.
Results
Half of the population reported good sleep quality. After adjusting for potential confounders, women and Beijing residents had almost half the probability to report good sleep quality. Good physical and mental health (good levels of self-rated health (OR 2.48; 95%CI 2.08 to 2.96) and no depression (OR 4.05; 95%CI 3.12 to 5.26)) related to an increased chance of reporting good sleep quality, whereas short sleep duration (<7 hrs OR 0.10; 95%CI 0.07 to 0.14)) decreased it substantially. There were significant associations between levels of sleep quality and concentrations of plasma insulin, total and LDL cholesterol, and index of insulin resistance.
Conclusion
Levels of good sleep quality in middle-age and elderly Chinese were low. Gender, geographical location, self-rated health, depression and sleep quantity were major factors associated with sleep quality. Prospective studies are required to distil the factors that determine sleep quality and the effects that sleep patterns exert on cardio-metabolic health
Unsupervised domain adaptation in brain lesion segmentation with adversarial networks
Significant advances have been made towards building accu- rate automatic segmentation systems for a variety of biomedical applica- tions using machine learning. However, the performance of these systems often degrades when they are applied on new data that differ from the training data, for example, due to variations in imaging protocols. Man- ually annotating new data for each test domain is not a feasible solution. In this work we investigate unsupervised domain adaptation using ad- versarial neural networks to train a segmentation method which is more invariant to differences in the input data, and which does not require any annotations on the test domain. Specifically, we learn domain-invariant features by learning to counter an adversarial network, which attempts to classify the domain of the input data by observing the activations of the segmentation network. Furthermore, we propose a multi-connected domain discriminator for improved adversarial training. Our system is evaluated using two MR databases of subjects with traumatic brain in- juries, acquired using different scanners and imaging protocols. Using our unsupervised approach, we obtain segmentation accuracies which are close to the upper bound of supervised domain adaptation

A new interpretation of total column BrO during Arctic spring
Emission of bromine from sea-salt aerosol, frost flowers, ice leads, and snow results in the nearly complete removal of surface ozone during Arctic spring. Regions of enhanced total column BrO observed by satellites have traditionally been associated with these emissions. However, airborne measurements of BrO and O3 within the convective boundary layer (CBL) during the ARCTAS and ARCPAC field campaigns at times bear little relation to enhanced column BrO. We show that the locations of numerous satellite BrO "hotspots" during Arctic spring are consistent with observations of total column ozone and tropopause height, suggesting a stratospheric origin to these regions of elevated BrO. Tropospheric enhancements of BrO large enough to affect the column abundance are also observed, with important contributions originating from above the CBL. Closure of the budget for total column BrO, albeit with significant uncertainty, is achieved by summing observed tropospheric partial columns with calculated stratospheric partial columns provided that natural, short-lived biogenic bromocarbons supply between 5 and 10 ppt of bromine to the Arctic lowermost stratosphere. Proper understanding of bromine and its effects on atmospheric composition requires accurate treatment of geographic variations in column BrO originating from both the stratosphere and troposphere. energies the disassembling hot system formed in heavy ion collisions will pass
through a liquid-gas coexistence region. Searching for the signatures of the
phase transition has been a very important focal point of experimental
endeavours in heavy ion collisions, in the last fifteen years. Simultaneously
theoretical models have been developed to provide information about the
equation of state and reaction mechanisms consistent with the experimental

Lung Cancer in Pulmonary Fibrosis: Tales of Epithelial Cell Plasticity
Lung epithelial cells exhibit a high degree of plasticity. Alterations to lung epithelial cell function are critically involved in several chronic lung diseases such as pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary fibrosis is characterized by repetitive injury and subsequent impaired repair of epithelial cells, which leads to aberrant growth factor activation and fibroblast accumulation. Increased proliferation and hyper- and metaplasia of epithelial cells upon injury have also been observed in pulmonary fibrosis; this epithelial cell activation might represent the basis for lung cancer development. Indeed, several studies have provided histopathological evidence of an increased incidence of lung cancer in pulmonary fibrosis. The mechanisms involved in the development of cancer in pulmonary fibrosis, however, remain poorly understood. This review highlights recently uncovered molecular mechanisms shared between lung cancer and fibrosis, which extend the current evidence of a common trait of cancer and fibrosis, as provided by histopathological observations.
