Low-operating-voltage polymer thin-film transistors based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) with hafnium oxide as the gate dielectric
The effects of hafnium oxide gate dielectric annealing treatment in oxygen and ammonia ambient on the electrical performance of polymer thin-film transistors (PTFTs) based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) are investigated. The PTFTs with gate dielectric and also octadecyltrichlorosilane surface modification, prepared by spin-coating process, exhibit good performance, such as a small threshold voltage of 0.5 V and an operating voltage as low as 4 V. Results indicate that the PTFT with -annealed shows higher carrier mobility, larger on/off current ratio, smaller subthreshold swing, and lower threshold voltage than the PTFT with -annealed . Capacitancevoltage analysis for metal-polymer-oxide-silicon structures indicates that the better electrical performance of the PTFT with -annealed is attributed to improved dielectric/polymer interface and reduced series resistance in the transistor. Mechanisms of particle preferential concentration induced by secondary motions in a dilute turbulent square duct flow
Particle-laden turbulent square duct flows at ReΟ = 300 (based on the duct half-width and the mean friction velocity) are investigated using direct numerical simulation with one-way coupled Lagrangian particle tracking. Four particle-to-fluid density ratios are considered with the corresponding shear Stokes number St+ = 0.31, 25, 125, and 260. Particle motion is governed by drag, lift, added-mass, and pressure gradient forces. The main purpose of this work is to examine the effect of the turbulence-driven secondary flows on particle preferential accumulation and their dependence on the Stokes number. Results obtained indicate that the cross-stream secondary motions encourage inertial particles to accumulate preferentially in the duct corners, where the maximum of the cross-sectional particle concentration occurs. The extent of accumulation here is strongly dependent on the Stokes number, with the greatest accumulation found at St+ = 25. Interestingly, the maximum of the intensity of the secondary particle velocity along the corner bisector is also achieved at St+ = 25, whereas in the region adjacent to the wall, it is found to decrease with a particle Stokes number. Additionally, it is observed that the higher inertia particles are more easily trapped in the stagnation zone of secondary flows with low turbulence intensity in the corner region. In the near-wall region, the heavier particles (St+ β₯ 25) are prone to reside and form elongated clusters along the low-speed streamwise velocity streaks, with this trend less pronounced with the increasing Stokes number. Along the wall, away from the corner where the secondary motion is attenuated, particle accumulation is dominated by the near-wall coherent vortices. This phenomenon is further discussed using a region-based correlation analysis between the particle spatial distribution and local flow topology. An in-depth particle dynamic analysis determines that the average cross-sectional drag force resulting from the secondary flow is mainly responsible for the particle motion throughout the duct cross section, which tends to push particles away from the walls in the near-wall region but shows the exact opposite trend in the bulk flow region. Moreover, the pressure gradient force also plays an important role for low-inertia particles. As the Stokes number is increased, the lift force becomes progressively dominant in the viscous sublayer, acting to pull particles toward the corners and walls of the duct
KIAA0101 (OEACT-1), an expressionally down-regulated and growth-inhibitory gene in human hepatocellular carcinoma
BACKGROUND: Our previous cDNA array results indicated KIAA0101 as one of the differentially expressed genes in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) as compared with non-cancerous liver. However, it is necessary to study its expression at protein level in HCC and its biological function for HCC cell growth. METHOD: Western blot and tissue array were performed to compare KIAA0101 protein expression level in paired human HCC and non-cancerous liver tissues from the same patients. Investigation of its subcellular localization was done by using dual fluorescence image examination and enriched mitochondrial protein Western blot analysis. The in vitro cell growth curve was used for examing the effect of over-expression of KIAA0101 in HCC cells. FACS was used to analyze the cell cycle pattern in KIAA0101 expression positive (+) and negative (-) cell populations isolated by the pMACSKK(II )system after KIAA0101 cDNA transfection. RESULTS: Western blot showed KIAA0101 protein expression was down-regulated in HCC tissues as compared with their counterpart non-cancerous liver tissues in 25 out of 30 cases. Tissue array also demonstrated the same pattern in 161 paired samples. KIAA0101 was predominantly localized in mitochondria and partially in nuclei. KIAA0101 cDNA transfection could inhibit the HCC cell growth in vitro. In cell cycle analysis, it could arrest cells at the G(1 )to S phase transition. CONCLUSION: KIAA0101 protein expression was down-regulated in HCC. This gene could inhibit the HCC cell growth in vitro and presumably by its blocking effect on cell cycle

In this lecture we review high-pressure phase transition sequences exhibited
by simple elements, looking at the examples of the main group I, II, IV, V, and
VI elements. General trends are established by analyzing the changes in
coordination number on compression. Experimentally found phase transitions and
crystal structures are discussed with a brief description of the present

Bayesian hierarchical clustering for studying cancer gene expression data with unknown statistics
Clustering analysis is an important tool in studying gene expression data. The Bayesian hierarchical clustering (BHC) algorithm can automatically infer the number of clusters and uses Bayesian model selection to improve clustering quality. In this paper, we present an extension of the BHC algorithm. Our Gaussian BHC (GBHC) algorithm represents data as a mixture of Gaussian distributions. It uses normal-gamma distribution as a conjugate prior on the mean and precision of each of the Gaussian components. We tested GBHC over 11 cancer and 3 synthetic datasets. The results on cancer datasets show that in sample clustering, GBHC on average produces a clustering partition that is more concordant with the ground truth than those obtained from other commonly used algorithms. Furthermore, GBHC frequently infers the number of clusters that is often close to the ground truth. In gene clustering, GBHC also produces a clustering partition that is more biologically plausible than several other state-of-the-art methods. Photon Management in Two-Dimensional Disordered Media
Elaborating reliable and versatile strategies for efficient light coupling
between free space and thin films is of crucial importance for new technologies
in energy efficiency. Nanostructured materials have opened unprecedented
opportunities for light management, notably in thin-film solar cells. Efficient
coherent light trapping has been accomplished through the careful design of
plasmonic nanoparticles and gratings, resonant dielectric particles and
photonic crystals. Alternative approaches have used randomly-textured surfaces
as strong light diffusers to benefit from their broadband and wide-angle
properties. Here, we propose a new strategy for photon management in thin films
that combines both advantages of an efficient trapping due to coherent optical
effects and broadband/wide-angle properties due to disorder. Our approach
consists in the excitation of electromagnetic modes formed by multiple light
scattering and wave interference in two-dimensional random media. We show, by
numerical calculations, that the spectral and angular responses of thin films
containing disordered photonic patterns are intimately related to the in-plane
light transport process and can be tuned through structural correlations. Our
findings, which are applicable to all waves, are particularly suited for
improving the absorption efficiency of thin-film solar cells and can provide a
novel approach for high-extraction efficiency light-emitting diodes
Effectiveness of en masse versus two-step retraction:a systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract Background This review aims to compare the effectiveness of en masse and two-step retraction methods during orthodontic space closure regarding anchorage preservation and anterior segment retraction and to assess their effect on the duration of treatment and root resorption. Methods An electronic search for potentially eligible randomized controlled trials and prospective controlled trials was performed in five electronic databases up to July 2017. The process of study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment was performed by two reviewers independently. A narrative review is presented in addition to a quantitative synthesis of the pooled results where possible. The Cochrane risk of bias tool and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale were used for the methodological quality assessment of the included studies. Results Eight studies were included in the qualitative synthesis in this review. Four studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. En masse/miniscrew combination showed a statistically significant standard mean difference regarding anchorage preservation ββ2.55Β mm (95% CI ββ2.99 to ββ2.11) and the amount of upper incisor retraction β 0.38 mm (95% CI β 0.70 to β 0.06) when compared to a two-step/conventional anchorage combination. Qualitative synthesis suggested that en masse retraction requires less time than two-step retraction with no difference in the amount of root resorption. Conclusions Both en masse and two-step retraction methods are effective during the space closure phase. The en masse/miniscrew combination is superior to the two-step/conventional anchorage combination with regard to anchorage preservation and amount of retraction. Limited evidence suggests that anchorage reinforcement with a headgear produces similar results with both retraction methods. Limited evidence also suggests that en masse retraction may require less time and that no significant differences exist in the amount of root resorption between the two methods
Reduction of Plasma Gelsolin Levels Correlates with Development of Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome and Fatal Outcome in Burn Patients
BACKGROUND: Depletion of the circulating actin-binding protein, plasma gelsolin (pGSN) has been described in critically ill surgical patients. We hypothesized that the extent of pGSN reduction might correlate with different outcome of burn patients. The study was performed to evaluate the prognostic implications of pGSN levels on the development of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and fatal outcome in a group of severely burn patients. METHODS AND FINDINGS: 95 patients were included, and they were divided into three groups with different burn area: group I (nβ=β33), group II (nβ=β32) and group III (nβ=β30). According to whether there was development of MODS or not, patients were divided into MODS group (nβ=β28) and none-MODS group (nβ=β67); then the patients with MODS were further divided into non-survivor group (nβ=β17) and survivor group (nβ=β11). The peripheral blood samples were collected on postburn days (PBD) 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21. The levels of pGSN were determined and T cells were procured from the blood. The contents of cytokines (IL-2, IL-4 and IFN-Ξ³) released by T cells were also measured. The related factors of prognosis were analyzed by using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The results showed that pGSN concentrations, as well as the levels of IL-2 and IFN-Ξ³, decreased markedly on PBD 1-21, whereas, the levels of IL-4 increased markedly in all burn groups as compared with normal controls (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and there were obviously differences between group I and group III (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The similar results were found in MODS patients and the non-survivor group as compared with those without MODS and the survival group on days 3-21 postburn (P<0.05 or P<0.01). Moreover, as the pGSN levels decreased, the incidence of septic complication as well as MODS remarkably increased. CONCLUSIONS: pGSN levels appear to be an early prognostic marker in patients suffering from major burns
Disparities and risks of sexually transmissible infections among men who have sex with men in China: a meta-analysis and data synthesis.
BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Hepatitis B and C virus, are emerging public health risks in China, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This study aims to assess the magnitude and risks of STIs among Chinese MSM. METHODS: Chinese and English peer-reviewed articles were searched in five electronic databases from January 2000 to February 2013. Pooled prevalence estimates for each STI infection were calculated using meta-analysis. Infection risks of STIs in MSM, HIV-positive MSM and male sex workers (MSW) were obtained. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO. RESULTS: Eighty-eight articles (11 in English and 77 in Chinese) investigating 35,203 MSM in 28 provinces were included in this review. The prevalence levels of STIs among MSM were 6.3% (95% CI: 3.5-11.0%) for chlamydia, 1.5% (0.7-2.9%) for genital wart, 1.9% (1.3-2.7%) for gonorrhoea, 8.9% (7.8-10.2%) for hepatitis B (HBV), 1.2% (1.0-1.6%) for hepatitis C (HCV), 66.3% (57.4-74.1%) for human papillomavirus (HPV), 10.6% (6.2-17.6%) for herpes simplex virus (HSV-2) and 4.3% (3.2-5.8%) for Ureaplasma urealyticum. HIV-positive MSM have consistently higher odds of all these infections than the broader MSM population. As a subgroup of MSM, MSW were 2.5 (1.4-4.7), 5.7 (2.7-12.3), and 2.2 (1.4-3.7) times more likely to be infected with chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HCV than the broader MSM population, respectively. CONCLUSION: Prevalence levels of STIs among MSW were significantly higher than the broader MSM population. Co-infection of HIV and STIs were prevalent among Chinese MSM. Integration of HIV and STIs healthcare and surveillance systems is essential in providing effective HIV/STIs preventive measures and treatments. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO NO: CRD42013003721
Quantification of Epstein-Barr virus DNA load, interleukin-6, interleukin-10, transforming growth factor-Ξ²1 and stem cell factor in plasma of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma
BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common epithelial neoplasm among the Chinese populations in Southern China and South East Asia. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is known to be an important etiologic agent of NPC and the viral gene products are frequently detected in NPC tissues along with elevated antibody titres to the viral proteins (VCA and EA) in a majority of patients. Elevated plasma EBV DNA load is regarded as an important marker for the presence of the disease and for the monitoring of disease progression. However, other serum/plasma parameters such as the levels of certain interleukins and growth factors have also been implicated in NPC. The objectives of the present study are, 1) to investigate the correlations between plasma EBV DNA load and the levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, TGF-Ξ²1 and SCF (steel factor) and 2) to relate these parameters to the stages of NPC and the effect of treatment. METHODS: A total of 78 untreated NPC patients were enrolled in this study. Of these, 51 were followed-up after treatment. The remaining patients had irregular or were lost to follow-up. Plasma EBV DNA was quantified using real-time quantitative PCR. The levels of plasma interleukins and growth factors were quantified using ELISA. RESULTS: A significant decrease in EBV DNA load was detected in plasma of untreated NPC patients (1669 Β± 637 copies/mL; n = 51) following treatment (57 Β± 37 copies/mL, p < 0.05); n = 51). Plasma EBV DNA load was shown to be a good prognosticator for disease progression and clinical outcome in five of the follow-up patients. A significant difference in IL-6 levels was noted between the untreated patients (164 Β± 37 pg/mL; n = 51) and following treatment (58 Β± 16 pg/mL, p < 0.05; n = 51). Positive correlations between EBV DNA load and IL-10 (r(49) = 0.535, p < 0.01), between IL6 and IL-10 (r(49) = 0.474, p < 0.01) and between TGF and SCF (r(49) = 0.464, p < 0.01) were observed in patients following treatment. None of the parameters tested including IgA-VCA were associated with tumour stages. CONCLUSION: We conclude that among the parameters investigated, EBV DNA load and IL-6 levels were promising markers for the presence of NPC and for the assessment of treatment outcome
