Black hole collision with a scalar particle in three dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime
We study the collision between a BTZ black hole and a test particle coupled
to a scalar field. We compute the power spectrum, the energy radiated and the
plunging waveforms for this process. We show that for late times the signal is
dominated by the quasinormal ringing. In terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence
the bulk gravity process maps into a thermal state, an expanding bubble and
gauge particles decaying into bosons of the associated operator. These latter
thermalize in a timescale predicted by the bulk theory.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures;minor improvements; references adde
Biological and morphometric aspects and rearing of Syssphinx molina (Cramer) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), a defoliator of parica tree.
Quasi-normal modes of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes
The low-laying frequencies of characteristic quasi-normal modes (QNM) of
Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black holes have been calculated for fields of
different spin using the 6th-order WKB approximation and the approximation by
the P\"{o}shl-Teller potential. The well-known asymptotic formula for large
is generalized here on a case of the Schwarzchild-de Sitter black hole. In the
limit of the near extreme term the results given by both methods are
in a very good agreement, and in this limit fields of different spin decay with
the same rate.Comment: 9 pages, 1 ancillary Mathematica(R) noteboo

Future of the universe in modified gravitational theories: Approaching to the finite-time future singularity
We investigate the future evolution of the dark energy universe in modified
gravities including gravity, string-inspired scalar-Gauss-Bonnet and
modified Gauss-Bonnet ones, and ideal fluid with the inhomogeneous equation of
state (EoS). Modified Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) dynamics for all these
theories may be presented in universal form by using the effective ideal fluid
with an inhomogeneous EoS without specifying its explicit form. We construct
several examples of the modified gravity which produces accelerating
cosmologies ending at the finite-time future singularity of all four known
types by applying the reconstruction program. Some scenarios to resolve the
finite-time future singularity are presented. Among these scenarios, the most
natural one is related with additional modification of the gravitational action
in the early universe. In addition, late-time cosmology in the non-minimal
Maxwell-Einstein theory is considered. We investigate the forms of the
non-minimal gravitational coupling which generates the finite-time future
singularities and the general conditions for this coupling in order that the
finite-time future singularities cannot emerge. Furthermore, it is shown that
the non-minimal gravitational coupling can remove the finite-time future
singularities or make the singularity stronger (or weaker) in modified gravity.Comment: 25 pages, no figure, title changed, accepted in JCA
Lack of effect of lowering LDL cholesterol on cancer: meta-analysis of individual data from 175,000 people in 27 randomised trials of statin therapy

Background: Statin therapy reduces the risk of occlusive vascular events, but uncertainty remains about potential effects on cancer. We sought to provide a detailed assessment of any effects on cancer of lowering LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) with a statin using individual patient records from 175,000 patients in 27 large-scale statin trials.

Methods and Findings: Individual records of 134,537 participants in 22 randomised trials of statin versus control (median duration 4.8 years) and 39,612 participants in 5 trials of more intensive versus less intensive statin therapy (median duration 5.1 years) were obtained. Reducing LDL-C with a statin for about 5 years had no effect on newly diagnosed cancer or on death from such cancers in either the trials of statin versus control (cancer incidence: 3755 [1.4% per year [py]] versus 3738 [1.4% py], RR 1.00 [95% CI 0.96-1.05]; cancer mortality: 1365 [0.5% py] versus 1358 [0.5% py], RR 1.00 [95% CI 0.93–1.08]) or in the trials of more versus less statin (cancer incidence: 1466 [1.6% py] vs 1472 [1.6% py], RR 1.00 [95% CI 0.93–1.07]; cancer mortality: 447 [0.5% py] versus 481 [0.5% py], RR 0.93 [95% CI 0.82–1.06]). Moreover, there was no evidence of any effect of reducing LDL-C with statin therapy on cancer incidence or mortality at any of 23 individual categories of sites, with increasing years of treatment, for any individual statin, or in any given subgroup. In particular, among individuals with low baseline LDL-C (<2 mmol/L), there was no evidence that further LDL-C reduction (from about 1.7 to 1.3 mmol/L) increased cancer risk (381 [1.6% py] versus 408 [1.7% py]; RR 0.92 [99% CI 0.76–1.10]).

Conclusions: In 27 randomised trials, a median of five years of statin therapy had no effect on the incidence of, or mortality from, any type of cancer (or the aggregate of all cancer).

Multiplicity and oscillations in a model for catalyzed oxidation of carbon monoxide
We extend a model proposed for explaining multiplicity and oscillations of concentrations and temperature in catalyzed oxidation of carbon monoxide; the importance of the dimension of the system and the closure approximation applied to the results, and, especially to the oscillatory behavior, is analyzed. Kinetic phase transitions, namely, single state multiplicity, single state oscillations, and multiplicity oscillations are found, depending on the reaction heat and the temperature relaxation parameter. Also, the role played by desorption of reactants is considered. When there is no desorption, temperature oscillations take place around room temperature, but if desorption is operative, oscillations occur about a higher temperature. For the one-dimensional case a spurious kinetic phase transition is obtained when the singlet closure approximation is appliedDirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica PB91-060
