Adaptation of the forecasting system to control Black Leaf Streak Disease of banana in the specific conditions of Dominican Republic
Introduction. Black Leaf Streak Disease (BLSD) is the most important foliar disease affecting banana production worldwide. A forecasting system has been developed and implemented in various countries aiming at optimal control of BLSD through minimum applications of fungicide. In Dominican Republic, favorable dry climatic conditions contrast with serious organizational issues for BLSD control. Our objective was to evaluate the adaptation of this forecasting strategy in these specific conditions. Materials and methods. Fungicide resistance analyses were carried out in the northwestern region of Dominican Republic, in order to determine the appropriate spectrum of systemic fungicides for the forecasting strategy. Three field experiments were set up on commercial farms where disease evolution was monitored every week, on reference plots, in order to decide the pertinence of fungicide applications. Results. Fungicide resistance to QoI fungicides and strong sensitivity reduction to DMI (Demethylation Inhibitor) fungicides were detected in all farms. In spite of these limitations in the use of some fungicide groups, disease control was achieved with a limited number of fungicide applications (6–9), as compared with 13–26 applications in most commercial farms of Dominican Republic over the same period. Discussion. The calculation of an indicator of the efficiency of the chemical control confirmed the potential of the forecasting strategy, underlining the influence of crop management as well as the neighboring environment of the farms on its efficiency. The requirements for further generalization of this system to commercial farms of this country are discussed. (Résumé d'auteur
Probing the Inner Disk Emission of the Herbig Ae Stars HD 163296 and HD 190073
The physical processes occurring within the inner few astronomical units of
proto-planetary disks surrounding Herbig Ae stars are crucial to setting the
environment in which the outer planet-forming disk evolves and put critical
constraints on the processes of accretion and planet migration. We present the
most complete published sample of high angular resolution H- and K-band
observations of the stars HD 163296 and HD 190073, including 30 previously
unpublished nights of observations of the former and 45 nights of the latter
with the CHARA long-baseline interferometer, in addition to archival VLTI data.
We confirm previous observations suggesting significant near-infrared emission
originates within the putative dust evaporation front of HD 163296 and show
this is the case for HD 190073 as well. The H- and K-band sizes are the same
within for HD 163296 and within for HD 190073. The
radial surface brightness profiles for both disks are remarkably Gaussian-like
with little or no sign of the sharp edge expected for a dust evaporation front.
Coupled with spectral energy distribution analysis, our direct measurements of
the stellar flux component at H and K bands suggest that HD 190073 is much
younger (<400 kyr) and more massive (~5.6 M) than previously thought,
mainly as a consequence of the new Gaia distance (891 pc).Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Can Reproductive Health Voucher Programs Improve Quality of Postnatal Care? A Quasi-Experimental Evaluation of Kenya’s Safe Motherhood Voucher Scheme
This study tests the group-level causal relationship between the expansion of Kenya’s Safe Motherhood voucher program and changes in quality of postnatal care (PNC) provided at voucher-contracted facilities. We compare facilities accredited since program inception in 2006 (phase I) and facilities accredited since 2010-2011 (phase II) relative to comparable non-voucher facilities. PNC quality is assessed using observed clinical content processes, as well as client-reported outcome measures. Two-tailed unpaired t-tests are used to identify differences in mean process quality scores and client-reported outcome measures, comparing changes between intervention and comparison groups at the 2010 and 2012 data collection periods. Difference-in-differences analysis is used to estimate the reproductive health (RH) voucher program’s causal effect on quality of care by exploiting group-level differences between voucher-accredited and non-accredited facilities in 2010 and 2012. Participation in the voucher scheme since 2006 significantly improves overall quality of postnatal care by 39% (p=0.02), where quality is defined as the observable processes or components of service provision that occur during a PNC consultation. Program participation since phase I is estimated to improve the quality of observed maternal postnatal care by 86% (p=0.02), with the largest quality improvements in counselling on family planning methods (IRR 5.0; p=0.01) and return to fertility (IRR 2.6; p=0.01). Despite improvements in maternal aspects of PNC, we find a high proportion of mothers who seek PNC are not being checked by any provider after delivery. Additional strategies will be necessary to standardize provision of packaged postnatal interventions to both mother and new-born. This study addresses an important gap in the existing RH literature by using a strong evaluation design to assess RH voucher program effectiveness on quality improvement
Validity of Robot-based Assessments of Upper Extremity Function
Objective To examine the validity of 5 robot-based assessments of arm motor function post-stroke. Design Cross sectional. Setting Outpatient clinical research center. Participants Volunteer sample of 40 participants, age \u3e18 years, 3-6 months post-stroke, with arm motor deficits that had plateaued. Intervention None. Main Outcome Measures Clinical standards included the Fugl-Meyer Arm Motor Scale (FMA), and 5 secondary motor outcomes: hand/wrist subsection of the FMA; Action Research Arm Test (ART); Box & Blocks test (B/B); hand subscale of Stroke Impact Scale-2 (SIS); and the Barthel Index (BI). Robot-based assessments included: wrist targeting; finger targeting; finger movement speed; reaction time; and a robotic version of the (B/B) test. Anatomical measures included percentage injury to the corticospinal tract (CST) and primary motor cortex (M1, hand region) obtained from MRI . Results Subjects had moderate-severe impairment (arm FMA scores = 35.6±14.4, range 13.5-60). Performance on the robot-based tests, including speed (r=0.82, p\u3c0.0001), wrist targeting (r=0.72, p\u3c0.0001), and finger targeting (r=0.67, p\u3c0.0001) correlated significantly with the FMA scores. Wrist targeting (r=0.57 - 0.82) and finger targeting (r=0.49 - 0.68) correlated significantly with all 5 secondary motor outcomes and with percent CST injury. The robotic version of the B/B correlated significantly with the clinical B/B test but was less prone to floor effect. Robot-based assessments were comparable to FMA score in relation to percent CST injury and superior in relation to M1 hand injury. Conclusions The current findings support using a battery of robot-based methods for assessing the upper extremity motor function in subjects with chronic stroke
The Small Separation A-Star Companion Population: First Results with CHARA/MIRC-X
We present preliminary results from our long-baseline interferometry (LBI)
survey to constrain the multiplicity properties of intermediate-mass A-type
stars within 80pc. Previous multiplicity studies of nearby stars exhibit
orbital separation distributions well-fitted with a log-normal with peaks >
15au, increasing with primary mass. The A-star multiplicity survey of De Rosa
et al. (2014), sensitive beyond 30au but incomplete below 100 au, found a
log-normal peak around 390au. Radial velocity surveys of slowly-rotating,
chemically peculiar Am stars identified a significant number of very close
companions with periods 5 days, ~ 0.1au, a result similar to surveys of
O- and B-type primaries. With the improved performance of LBI techniques, we
can probe these close separations for normal A-type stars where other surveys
are incomplete. Our initial sample consists of 27 A-type primaries with
estimated masses between 1.44-2.49M and ages 10-790Myr, which we
observed with the MIRC-X instrument at the CHARA Array. We use the open source
software CANDID to detect five companions, three of which are new, and derive a
companion frequency of 0.19 over mass ratios 0.25-1.0 and
projected separations 0.288-5.481 au. We find a probability of 10 that
our results are consistent with extrapolations based on previous models of the
A-star companion population, over mass ratios and separations sampled. Our
results show the need to explore these very close separations to inform our

Emergent dynamic chirality in a thermally driven artificial spin ratchet
Modern nanofabrication techniques have opened the possibility to create novel functional materials, whose properties transcend those of their constituent elements. In particular, tuning the magnetostatic interactions in geometrically frustrated arrangements of nanoelements called artificial spin ice1, 2 can lead to specific collective behaviour3, including emergent magnetic monopoles4, 5, charge screening6, 7 and transport8, 9, as well as magnonic response10, 11, 12. Here, we demonstrate a spin-ice-based active material in which energy is converted into unidirectional dynamics. Using X-ray photoemission electron microscopy we show that the collective rotation of the average magnetization proceeds in a unique sense during thermal relaxation. Our simulations demonstrate that this emergent chiral behaviour is driven by the topology of the magnetostatic field at the edges of the nanomagnet array, resulting in an asymmetric energy landscape. In addition, a bias field can be used to modify the sense of rotation of the average magnetization. This opens the possibility of implementing a magnetic Brownian ratchet13, 14, which may find applications in novel nanoscale devices, such as magnetic nanomotors, actuators, sensors or memory cells
