    Non-universal gauge boson ZZ' and the spin correlation of top quark pair production at ee+e^{-}e^{+} colliders

    In the off-diagonal basis, we discuss the contributions of the non-universal gauge boson ZZ' predicted by the topcolor-assisted technicolor (TC2TC2) model to the spin configurations and the spin correlation observable of the top quark pair production via the process ee+ttˉe^{-}e^{+}\to t\bar{t}. Our numerical results show that the production cross sections for the like-spin states, which vanish in the standard model, can be significantly large as MZSM_{Z'}\approx \sqrt{S}. With reasonable values of the ZZ' mass MZM_{Z'} and the coupling parameter k1k_{1}, ZZ' exchange can generate large corrections to the spin correlation observable.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figure

    Effects of bowel preparation on intestinal bacterial associated urine and faecal metabolites and the associated faecal microbiome

    Background Urinary and faecal metabolic profiling have been extensively studied in gastrointestinal diseases as potential diagnostic markers, and to enhance our understanding of the intestinal microbiome in the pathogenesis these conditions. The impact of bowel cleansing on the microbiome has been investigated in several studies, but limited to just one study on the faecal metabolome. Aim To compare the effects of bowel cleansing on the composition of the faecal microbiome, and the urine and faecal metabolome. Methods Urine and faecal samples were obtained from eleven patients undergoing colonoscopy at baseline, and then at day 3 and week 6 after colonoscopy. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to analyse changes in the microbiome, and metabonomic analysis was performed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. Results Microbiomic analysis demonstrated a reduction in alpha diversity (Shannon index) between samples taken at baseline and three days following bowel cleansing (p = 0.002), and there was no significant difference between samples at baseline and six weeks post colonoscopy. Targeted and non-targeted analysis of urinary and faecal bacterial associated metabolites showed no significant impact following bowel cleansing. Conclusions Bowel cleansing causes a temporary disturbance in bacterial alpha diversity measured in faeces, but no significant changes in the faecal and urine metabolic profiles, suggesting that overall the faecal microbiome and its associated metabolome is resistant to the effects of an induced osmotic diarrhoea

    Energy generation from palm oil mill effluent: A life cycle assessment of two biogas technologies

    © 2019 This study conducted a life cycle assessment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) based energy generation using the CML 2001 method and Gabi 8 software, focusing on two POME treatment technologies: the covered lagoon bio-digester (CLB) and the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The analysis determined the respective environmental impacts of the technologies, both of which are currently in use in Malaysia. The global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP) for CSTR were −4.48 kg CO2 eq/kWh and −2.21 kg SO2 eq/kWh respectively, while for CLB the values were −4.09 kg CO2 eq/kWh and −0.15 kg SO2 eq/kWh. Both technologies produced a negative result, which equates to a net environmental benefit. However, both systems had a negative impact in terms of eutrophication potential (EP). The CSTR nevertheless achieved a better EP result of 0.048 kg PO43− eq/kWh than the CLB with 0.054 kg PO43− eq/kWh. A sensitivity analysis was carried out in order to find a way to overcome the impacts of EP. The findings provide useful data to guide decision-makers in the sustainable management of POME, in Malaysia and globally where similar technologies are in use

    Total absorption of visible light in ultrathin weakly absorbing semiconductor gratings

    © 2016 Optical Society of America. The perfect absorption of light in subwavelength thickness layers generally relies on exotic materials, metamaterials or thick metallic gratings. Here we demonstrate that total light absorption can be achieved in ultra-thin gratings composed of conventional materials, including relatively weakly-absorbing semiconductors, which are compatible with optoelectronic applications such as photodetectors and optical modulators. We fabricate a 41 nm thick antimony sulphide grating structure that has a measured absorptance of A = 99.3% at a visible wavelength of 591 nm, in excellent agreement with theory. We infer that the absorption within the grating is A = 98.7%, with only A = 0.6% within the silver mirror. A planar reference sample absorbs A = 7.7% at this wavelength

    Energy Generation from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME): The Environmental Impact Perspective

    Palm oil is the most commonly used vegetable oil and is found in consumer products ranging from soap and chocolate to cooking oil. Approximately 90 % of global palm oil is supplied by Malaysia and Indonesia. In 2018, Malaysia and Indonesia set a target to increase their palm oil production to approximately 37.8 Mt and 20.5 Mt. It is anticipated that the palm oil residues generated from the production process will also increase. Palm oil mill residues such as oil palm fronds, oil palm trunks, palm oil mill effluent (POME), mesocarp fibres, palm kernel shells and empty fruit bunches have emerging potential to be converted into value-added products. This study focuses on POME because it has the potential to be used for the generation of renewable energy and Malaysia aims to utilise a greater amount of affordable, clean energy in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. To this end, this study analyses and compares the CO₂ equivalent (CO₂-eq) of two palm oil mills (POMs 1 and 2) that use different POME treatment technologies, namely the covered lagoon bio-digester (CLB; POM 1) and the continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR; POM 2) systems. The results of the analysis show that POM 1 produces 1,077.67 kg CO₂-eq, which is lower than that produced by POM 2 which emits 1,429.28 kg CO₂-eq

    Micronutrient status and intervention programs in Malaysia

    Approximately 70% of the world's malnourished children live in Asia, giving that region the highest concentration of childhood malnutrition worldwide. Prevalence of stunting and underweight are high especially in south Asia where one in every two preschool children is stunted. Iron-deficiency anemia affects 40%-50% of preschool and primary schoolchildren. Nearly half of all vitamin A deficiency and xerophthalmia in the world occurs in south and southeast Asia. Iodine deficiency disorders have resulted in high goiter rates in India, Pakistan, and parts of Indonesia. Compared with other developing countries in Asia, the nutrition situation in Malaysia is considerably better, owing to rapid economic and socioeconomic development that has occurred since Malaysia gained its independence in 1957. Prevalence of undernutrition and micronutrient deficiency is markedly lower in Malaysian children. Nonetheless, undernutrition in the form of underweight, stunting, and anemia can be found in poor communities throughout the country. A prevalence of 25% underweight and 35% stunting is reported among young children from poor rural households. Anemia and subclinical forms of vitamin A deficiency were reported in children under 5 years old. Typical of a country in nutrition transition, Malaysia faces the dual burden of malnutrition in children, with the persistence of undernutrition problems especially among the poor and the emerging overweight problem especially in urban areas. Since 1996, nutrition programs of the government sector are coordinated under the National Plan of Action for Nutrition. These activities and other nutrition intervention efforts by other agencies are discussed in this paper

    Brucellosis presenting as piriformis myositis: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Myositis is a rare bacterial muscle infection. Involvement of the piriformis muscle has been rarely reported in the literature. In this report we describe a case of piriformis myositis due to <it>Brucella melitensis</it>, which to the best of our knowledge is the first such case presented in the literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 19-year-old Caucasian man who presented to our institution with fever and right hip pain. Brucellosis was suspected, but the clinical suspicion was for spondylodiscitis. A pelvic magnetic resonance imaging scan allowed prompt diagnosis of inflammatory involvement of the right piriformis muscle. Blood culture results were positive for <it>B. melitensis</it>. Our patient was treated with antibiotics, and follow-up magnetic resonance imaging scans showed resolution of the inflammation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Brucellosis can present as piriformis myositis. The clinical diagnosis of piriformis myositis is difficult, as it can mimic other common entities such as referred back pain from spondylodiscitis. Magnetic resonance imaging is the method of choice for establishing the diagnosis in the early stages of the disease, as late diagnosis can lead to abscess formation and the need for drainage.</p

    Risk factors for severe hand foot mouth disease in Singapore: a case control study

    BACKGROUND: Hand foot mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infection that can potentially lead to serious complications. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors of acquiring severe HFMD in our population. METHODS: We performed a case control study using patients admitted to our hospital from August 2004 to July 2014. Cases were patients with severe HFMD disease while controls were age-matched patients obtained from the same year, in a 2:1 ratio. Data comprising demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms and signs, and lab findings were collected. Conditional univariable logistic regression was performed to determine risk factors for severe disease. RESULTS: A total of 24 cases of severe HFMD were identified and matched with 48 controls. Seventeen (70.8 %) cases had central nervous system complications. Seven (29.2 %) had cardiovascular complications without evidence of myocarditis. One patient died of encephalitis. The overall mortality of severe disease is 4 %. Evidence of hypoperfusion, seizure, altered mentation, meningeal irritation, tachycardia, tachypnea, raised absolute neutrophil count and EV-A71 (Enterovirus A71) positivity were significantly associated with a severe course of HFMD. CONCLUSION: In managing children with HFMD, physicians should consider these factors to help identify patients at risk for severe disease

    Do female association preferences predict the likelihood of reproduction?

    Sexual selection acting on male traits through female mate choice is commonly inferred from female association preferences in dichotomous mate choice experiments. However, there are surprisingly few empirical demonstrations that such association preferences predict the likelihood of females reproducing with a particular male. This information is essential to confirm association preferences as good predictors of mate choice. We used green swordtails (&lt;i&gt;Xiphophorus helleri&lt;/i&gt;) to test whether association preferences predict the likelihood of a female reproducing with a male. Females were tested for a preference for long- or short-sworded males in a standard dichotomous choice experiment and then allowed free access to either their preferred or non-preferred male. If females subsequently failed to produce fry, they were provided a second unfamiliar male with similar sword length to the first male. Females were more likely to reproduce with preferred than non-preferred males, but for those that reproduced, neither the status (preferred/non-preferred) nor the sword length (long/short) of the male had an effect on brood size or relative investment in growth by the female. There was no overall preference based on sword length in this study, but male sword length did affect likelihood of reproduction, with females more likely to reproduce with long- than short-sworded males (independent of preference for such males in earlier choice tests). These results suggest that female association preferences are good indicators of female mate choice but that ornament characteristics of the male are also important

    Psychological impact of visible differences in patients with congenital craniofacial anomalies

    © 2015, Singh and Moss; licensee Springer. Background: Patients with craniofacial anomalies often have appearance concerns and related social anxiety which can affect their quality of life. This study assessed the psychological impact of facial and dental appearance in patients with craniofacial anomalies in comparison to a general population control group. Methods: The study involved 102 adult patients (51% male) with congenital craniofacial anomalies and 102 controls (49% male). Both groups completed the Nepali version of Derriford Appearance Scale (DAS) and the Psychological Impact of Dental Aesthetic Questionnaire (PIDAQ) in a clinical setting to assess appearance-related distress, avoidance, and anxiety. Results: There was a significant difference between patients and controls on both PIDAQ (mean score for patients 33.25 ± 9.45 while for controls 27.52 ± 5.67, p < 0.001) and DAS59 scores (mean score for patients 159.16 ± 31.54 while for controls 77.64 ± 6.57, p < 0.001), indicating that patients experienced greater negative psychological impact of living with their appearance (PIDAQ) and more appearance-related distress (DAS) than controls. DAS scores were not associated with gender. There was no association of the place of residence (rural vs. urban) with PIDAQ or DAS59 scores. Conclusions: There is a significant psychological impact of altered facial and dental appearance in patients with craniofacial anomalies compared to controls.
