Adhesion testing device

The present invention provides a testing apparatus and method for testing the adhesion of a coating to a surface. The invention also includes an improved testing button or dolly for use with the testing apparatus and a self aligning button hook or dolly interface on the testing apparatus. According to preferred forms, the apparatus and method of the present invention are simple, portable, battery operated rugged, and inexpensive to manufacture and use, are readily adaptable to a wide variety of uses, and provide effective and accurate testing results. The device includes a linear actuator driven by an electric motor coupled to the actuator through a gearbox and a rotatable shaft. The electronics for the device are contained in the head section of the device. At the contact end of the device, is positioned a self aligning button hook, attached below the load cell located on the actuator shaft

'Primitive Rebellion' in den französischen Vorstädten: ein Essay über die Unruhen vom Herbst 2005

'Gewalttätige Auseinandersetzungen zwischen der Polizei und zumeist jugendlichen Bewohnern der französischen Vorstädte sind in den letzten 20 Jahren immer wieder ausgebrochen. In Hinblick auf ihr Ausmaß, ihre Verbreitung und Dynamik stellen die Krawalle von Herbst 2005 allerdings eine Besonderheit dar. Der Beitrag versucht, den Sinn dieser Form kollektiver Gewalt aus der Sicht der Akteure zu rekonstruieren, um so die besondere Dynamik der Unruhen verständlich zu machen. Dabei wird über historische Analogien deutlich, inwieweit die Gewalt in den spezifischen sozialen Kontexten und Lebensbedingungen der Vorstädte als eine Form 'primitive Rebellion' auszufassen ist, bei der Diskriminierungen durch die Polizei, die damit verbundene Emotionen von Ungerechtigkeit und fehlende institutionalisierte politische Ausdruckformen zu einer Eskalation beigetragen haben.' Nevertheless, concerning their extent, their spreading and dynamic the unrests of autumn 2005 seem to show something new. The article tries to reconstruct the sense of this form of collective violence from the perspective of the actors to make understandable the dynamic of the unrests. In using historical analogies it makes clear how the violence could be understood in the specific social contexts and the living conditions in the suburbs as a form of 'primitive rebellion'. Discrimination by the police, emotions of injustice and the absence of institutionalised modes of political expression have contributed to the escalation of the unrests.' (author's abstract)

De l'intégration à la ségrégation

La réapparition de la marginalité urbaine, de l'exclusion et des émeutes dans le paysage social illustre les changements profonds de la nature des sociétés européennes. Depuis la fin du XIXè siècle, le modèle des sociétés nationales a défini très exactement la nature de sociétés intégrées, régulées par des institutions et composées d'individus modernes. Les minorités, les ouvriers et les immigrés se sont ainsi " intégrés " à ces ensembles socionationaux. Aujourd'hui, ce modèle est brisé : la correspondance entre l'économie et la culture n'existe plus. L'intégration socionationale a éclaté, déchirée entre une économie d'exclusion et une culture dont la capacité d'" absorption " s'est accrue. Les comportements sónt devenus " discrétionnaires " et se sont considérablement diversifiés et individualisés. Ils n'entrent plus dans les cadres traditionnels. L'image d'une " intégration " de plus en plus affirmée dans des sociétés modernes a ainsi disparu au profit d'une installation durable dans un mode postnational de ségrégation sociale qui ne croit plus à un possible progrès dans ce sens et où les anciennes catégories politiques contribuent à accroître l'exclusion.European societies have undergone a profound change as the reappearance of a marginal urban population, exclusions and riots show. Since the end of the 19th century, there existed a clearly defined model of integrated society, regulated by the institutions and composed of " modern " individuals. Minorities, such as workers and immigrants, were thus integrated into known socio-national groups. Today this model is dead - the correspondence between the economy and culture no longer exists. Socio-national integration has burst asunder, torn apart between an excluding economy, and a culture with an expanded " absorptive " capacity. Behavioural patterns have become discretionary, diversified and individualised. They no longer fit into traditional channels. The image of an increasing integration into a modern society has disappeared and is replaced by a post-national pattern of social segregation, estranged from any sense of progress and adversely affected by the traditional political categories

‘My language … I don’t know how to talk about it’: children’s views on language diversity in primary schools in France and England

This article investigates the ways in which children from immigrant backgrounds view the place of ‘other’ languages in primary schools in France and England. This article draws on findings from a cross-national ethnographic study, which investigated the experiences of 10- and 11-year-old children of immigrants in two primary schools, one in France and one in England. It shows how, in both schools, children had to negotiate the symbolic domination of a single legitimate language and viewed their other languages as inferior, undesirable or illicit. Building on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, findings in this paper contribute insights into the complex debates around language diversity, multilingualism and intercultural communication in schools in France and England

Manufacturing and mechanical behaviour of polymer composites reinforced with 3D interlock structures

Les composites 3D renforcés de tissus interlocks d'angle couche-à-couche sont recherchés pour leurs bonnes résistances au délaminage et aux impacts. Cependant, la détermination précise du comportement mécanique de tels composites est complexe à cause de leur architecture numérique. L'objectif de ce travail est de déterminer les modules élastiques d'une plaque équivalente, en traction et en flexion, par une méthode d'homogénéisation asymptotique appliquée à une cellule unité périodique. Un programme spécifique est développé, permettant la modélisation géométrique et l'analyse mécanique de manière systématique et efficace. Cet outil permet de considérer l'influence du procédé de fabrication sur les paramètres géométriques et matériaux : l'architecture réelle après infusion et l'endommagement des fils durant le tissage. Les propriétés élastiques équivalentes sont validées par des simulations de plaques hétérogènes 3D et par comparaison expérimentale. L'interface fil/matrice est aussi analysée pour l'initiation d'endommagement dans le composite, introduit dans l'outil numérique par des surfaces cohésives, afin de compléter la modélisation du comportement mécanique.3D composites reinforced with layer-to-layer angle-interlock fabrics are attractive due to their superior properties in delamination and impact damage resistance. Nevertheless, the accurate prediction of the mechanical behavior of such composites is challenging due to the complex architecture. The purpose of this work is to assess the equivalent membrane and bending elastic moduli of the shell-type structure by a numerical asymptotic homogenization procedure on a periodic unit cell. A specific program is developed, allowing for parameterized geometrical modeling and mechanical analysis in a systematic and efficient way. This numerical tool enables to consider the influence of the manufacturing process on the geometric and material parameters: the real composite architecture after infusion and the yarn damage during weaving. The effective elastic properties are finally validated using numerical computations on 3D heterogeneous plates and by comparison with experimental tests. The yarn/matrix interface is also analyzed in terms of damage initiation into the composite, represented by cohesive surfaces in the numerical tool, in order to complete the understanding of its mechanical behavior

L'ordre de l'informe la construction sociale et politique du racisme dans la société française

la multiplication des actes de discrimination va de pair avec une ségrégation spatiale de plus en plus mar¬ quée : les ethnicités se construisent pour se différencier , au besoin par les insultes ou la violence. Sur le plan individuel , l'intégration ne semble pouvoir s'opérer que par le biais de la consommation , mais la culture de la consommation est en contradiction quotidienne avec la situation vécue. De ce fait l'individu ne peut se définir que par un manque , un déficit, et ne peut affirmer son intégration que de façon négative : racisme, mais aussi sexisme ou violence exercée à l'égard des enfants. Tout langage alternatif est impossible, car il est aussitôt perçu comme une manifestation de communautarisme.Lapeyronnie Didier.
