The use of antigravity suits in the treatment of idiopathic orthostatic hypotension

    Get PDF
Idiopathic orthostatic hypotension is an uncommon disease characterized by a drop in blood pressure when going from a recumbent to a standing position. Treatment by medication generally produces poor results. Three patients at the Royal Hospital in Oslo were treated with antigravity suits and all were able to maintain adequate blood pressures in the standing position. One patient improved dramatically and was able to take short walks while wearing the suit. The two other patients, however, felt that wearing the suits eventually became uncomfortable. This treatment represents a useful treatment alternative for intractable cases

The history and use as well as the physiology of the use of antigravity suits for the control of critical intra-abdominal hemorrhages is reviewed. The use of this suit is highly recommended, especially for first aid

Trust in public institutions, a comparative study of Botswana and Tanzania

    Get PDF
This thesis concerns institutional trust in Botswana and Tanzania and seeks to test several variables' importance in determining individuals' trust. African countries have historically been somewhat neglected in trust research and these two countries have therefore been chosen as the cases of my study. Based on the cultural theories and institutional theories of trust I have selected socio-demographic factors, social capital, transparency, democratic satisfaction and policy performance as my independent variables. The analysis is based on survey data from Afrobarometer conducted in 2012. The findings in this thesis suggest that the cultural theories do little in explaining institutional trust as the socio-demographic and social capital variables do rather poorly. Institutional theories on the other hand do very well in explaining variations in trust in public institutions. The most determining variable in terms of individuals trust in public institutions seems to be the general policy performance of the government and individuals' approval of the President's performance.AORG350MASV-AOR

SHOULD WE DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN BUSINESS AND PRIVATE CUSTOMERS?

The literature on how customers make their service-provider choices largely distinguishes between private and business customers, and companies’ offerings have been separated accordingly. This study takes a closer look at the possible differences between these two customer categories. The results are explorative and based on both qualitative and quantitative studies focusing on customers’ actual behavior. The findings show that it is not only job-related aspects such as “being able to work” that influence business travel, and that private matters such as “time with the family” are clearly of equal significance in the choice situation. Price perception is important, but only when it is set against the appropriate social costs. The contradiction appears in the airlines’ offers to these customers, which are generally specifically job related. The results of the present study show that most business customers are, in fact, “private customers”.air travel, customer relationships, business-to-business relationships, preferences, choice, service

Population Based Routing in LEO Satellite Networks

    Get PDF
Packet switching in a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network may calculate the best traffic route through the less populated areas of the planet, in order to avoid relaying through the busiest satellites. A number of ideas for route calculation in a LEO system have been evaluated and the performance results are presented. This paper reports from ongoing research on Space Information Networks (SIN) with the purpose to offer application services in a LEO satellite network to mobile users. The conclusion is that route calculation based on population density gives a moderate, but significant improvement in resource utilization.publishedVersio

Developing Global Talent for the World of Work through staff-student-industry collaboration and co-creation on a global scale

    Get PDF
This case study reports on the organisation and impact of the Global Talent for the World of Work forum (aka the WoW forum) 2019, as captured through a comprehensive framework of key performance statistics, reflections and qualitative feedback from staff, students, industry partners and other participants in the event. The WoW forum was the main deliverable from a British Council funded project for enhancing Higher Education (HE) Partnership with Vietnamese universities. The forum built on the experience of BU in running 9 Global Festivals of Learning (GFOL) over the past 4 years, partnering with HE partners in India, China ASEAN and Europe. Students play a critical role in these events, with their roles and the activities for the WoW event designed to accommodate latest seminal work on the future of jobs (WEF, 2018) and the global graduate skills gap (ISE,2019). The settings of the WoW forum offered rich foundation using a critical participatory action research as an learning platform for participants to share their knowledge, experiences and reflections on innovative HE-industry practices. It concludes that multi-dimensional events such as GFOLs and the WoW forum demonstrate the value of ‘comprehensive internationalisation’
