The effect of the environment on the Faber Jackson relation

We investigate the effect of the environment on the Faber Jackson (FJ) relation, using a sample of 384 nearby elliptical galaxies and estimating objectively their environment on the typical scale of galaxy clusters. We show that the intrinsic scatter of the FJ is significantly reduced when ellipticals in high density environments are compared to ellipticals in low density ones. This result, which holds on a limited range of overdensities, is likely to provide an important observational link between scaling relations and formation mechanisms in galaxies.Comment: accepted by Ap

"Capital Stock and Unemployment: Searching for the Missing Link"

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to examine the proposition that capital stock relative to aggregate output has been an important variable in the determination of the U.S. NAIRU (Non-Accelerating Inflation Rate of Unemployment) over the last four decades. We present new empirical evidence, obtained from the application of the cointegrated VAR methodology to U.S. time-series data, that lends strong support to the claim that the aggregate capital-output ratio, the real price of imports, and aggregate capacity utilization were determinants of the NAIRU in the period considered. The same evidence also shows that technical progress and changes in long-term unemployment did not affect the NAIRU. We believe this evidence suggests that, insofar as the aggregate capital-output ratio is affected by changes in real interest rates, the stance of monetary policy is one determinant of the NAIRU.

The search for plants with a high capacity to tolerate and accumulate metals is an important issue in phytoremediation. In this sense, this study was conducted in the halophyte Atriplex vulgatissima to evaluate the effects of different concentrations of lead (Pb, 50 and 100 μM) or zinc (Zn, 100 and 200 μM) on morphological, physiological, and biochemical parameters as well as the accumulation patterns of this species. The results indicated that while essential metal Zn showed high translocation from roots to shoots (TF > 1), non-essential Pb was mainly accumulated in the roots (BCF>1). Regarding shape, both metals induced slenderness of the blade, but only Zn treatment reduced leaf size. No difference in biomass production and photosynthetic parameters was found between Pb and Zn treatments. Pb treatments did not show significant differences between treatments regarding water content (WC), pigment concentration, and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and guaiacol peroxidase (GPx), but did result in a decrease in catalase activity at 100 μM Pb. On the other hand, 200 μM Zn leads to a clear reduction in WC and pigment concentrations, along with an increase in SOD and GPx activities. In addition, ascorbate peroxidase (APx) activity showed a hormesis effect at 50 μM Pb and 100 μM Zn. Malondialdehyde increased with both Pb and Zn treatments. The integrated biological index (IBRv2) indicated that 200 μM Zn was the most affected treatment (IBRv2 = 19.02) and that under the same concentrations of metals (100 μM Pb or Zn), Pb treatments presented major stress (IBRv2 = 11.55). A. vulgatissima is a metallophyte with the potential for Pb phytostabilization and Zn phytoextraction, as well as a bioindicator of these metals. Its high biomass and deep roots, combined with its halophytic traits, make it suitable for bioremediation and monitoring programs.Fil: Pollicelli, Maria de la Paz. Outbreak Of NDM-1-producing Klebsiella Pneumoniae In A Neonatal Unit In Colombia

Six multiresistant, NDM-1-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strains were recovered from an outbreak that affected six neonatal patients in a Colombian hospital. Molecular analysis showed that all of the isolates harbored the blaNDM-1, qnrA, and intI1 genes and were clonally related. Multilocus sequence typing showed that the isolates belonged to a new sequence type (ST1043) that was different from the sequence types that had previously been reported. This is the first report of NDM-1-producing isolates in South America

Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus; Scielo. Background: Nanotechnology is a science that involves imaging, measurement, modeling and a manipulation of matter at the nanometric scale. One application of this technology is drug delivery systems based on nanoparticles obtained from natural or synthetic sources. An example of these systems is synthetized from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate), which is a biodegradable, biocompatible and a low production cost polymer. The aim of this work was to investigate the uptake mechanism of PHBV nanoparticles in two different epithelial cell lines (HeLa and SKOV-3). Results: As a first step, we characterized size, shape and surface charge of nanoparticles using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Intracellular incorporation was evaluated through flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy using intracellular markers. We concluded that cellular uptake mechanism is carried out in a time, concentration and energy dependent way. Our results showed that nanoparticle uptake displays a cell-specific pattern, since we have observed different colocalization in two different cell lines. In HeLa (Cervical cancer cells) this process may occur via classical endocytosis pathway and some internalization via caveolin-dependent was also observed, whereas in SKOV-3 (Ovarian cancer cells) these patterns were not observed. Rearrangement of actin filaments showed differential nanoparticle internalization patterns for HeLa and SKOV-3. Additionally, final fate of nanoparticles was also determined, showing that in both cell lines, nanoparticles ended up in lysosomes but at different times, where they are finally degraded, thereby releasing their contents. Conclusions: Our results, provide novel insight about PHBV nanoparticles internalization suggesting that for develop a proper drug delivery system is critical understand the uptake mechanism.https://jnanobiotechnology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12951-016-0241-

Processes of urban vacuum and creative destruction in a neighborhood in the City of Buenos Aires. The case of former railway lands and adjacent areas

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes processes of “creative destruction” and “vacuuming” carried out by national and local government administrations and real-estate developers, for the urbanization of State-owned former railway lands (and adjacent premises, one of them once property of the Morixe flour mill, and the other one being a near community vegetable garden) located by the Caballito neighborhood in the City of Buenos Aires. These processes, coupled with the narratives of neighbors, influenced the definition of “legitimate” and “illegitimate” uses of urban space.Fil: Marcus, Juliana. Acetylcholinesterase expression in muscle is specifically controlled by a promoter-selective enhancesome in the first intron

    Get PDF
Mammalian acetylcholinesterase (AChE) gene expression is exquisitely regulated in target tissues and cells during differentiation. An intron located between the first and second exons governs a similar to 100-fold increase in AChE expression during myoblast to myotube differentiation in C2C12 cells. Regulation is confined to 255 bp of evolutionarily conserved sequence containing functional transcription factor consensus motifs that indirectly interact with the endogenous promoter. To examine control in vivo, this region was deleted by homologous recombination. The knock-out mouse is virtually devoid of AChE activity and its encoding mRNA in skeletal muscle, yet activities in brain and spinal cord innervating skeletal muscle are unaltered. The transcription factors MyoD and myocyte enhancer factor-2 appear to be responsible for muscle regulation. Selective control of AChE expression by this region is also found in hematopoietic lineages. Expression patterns in muscle and CNS neurons establish that virtually all AChE activity at the mammalian neuromuscular junction arises from skeletal muscle rather than from biosynthesis in the motoneuron cell body and axoplasmic transport

Hypocholesterolemic and Hepatoprotective Effects of “Triguero” Asparagus from Andalusia in Rats Fed a High Cholesterol Diet

    Get PDF
The cultivated species of the wild autochthonous Asparagus officinalis in Andalusia in Spain is commonly called “triguero” asparagus. This vegetable has traditionally been very much appreciated for its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics. This study has been designed to evaluate the potential effect of different concentrations of freeze-dried asparagus (500, 250, and 125 mg/Kg of body weight/day) on oxidative status and lipid profile in rats fed a cholesterol-rich diet. After five weeks of treatment, doses of 250 and 500 mg/Kg of asparagus were able to significantly reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. Atherogenic index was also significantly reduced in a dose-dependent manner by administrating freeze-dried asparagus. A beneficial effect was observed in the HDL cholesterol levels in asparagus-fed groups although the increase was not significant. Consumption of asparagus also improved antioxidant status, assayed superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes, and protected against lipid peroxidation. These results show that the intake of green asparagus from Andalusia (Spain) helps to regulate plasma lipid levels and prevents oxidative damage in hypercholesterolemic conditions
