Discourse comprehension in L2: Making sense of what is not explicitly said

Using ERPs, we tested whether L2 speakers can integrate multiple sources of information (e.g., semantic, pragmatic information) during discourse comprehension. We presented native speakers and L2 speakers with three-sentence scenarios in which the final sentence was highly causally related, intermediately related, or causally unrelated to its context; its interpretation therefore required simple or complex inferences. Native speakers revealed a gradual N400-like effect, larger in the causally unrelated condition than in the highly related condition, and falling in-between in the intermediately related condition, replicating previous results. In the crucial intermediately related condition, L2 speakers behaved like native speakers, however, showing extra processing in a later time-window. Overall, the results show that, when reading, L2 speakers are able to process information from the local context and prior information (e.g., world knowledge) to build global coherence, suggesting that they process different sources of information to make inferences online during discourse comprehension, like native speakers. This work was supported by grants from the Spanish Government (PSI2011-23033, CONSOLIDER-INGENIO2010 CSD2007-00048, ECO2011-25295, and ECO2010-09555-E), from the Catalan Government (SGR 2009-1521) and from the Grup de Recerca en Neurociència Cognitiva (GRNC) - 2014SGR1210. Some new aspects of the Galois theory

    Get PDF
Typescript.Realizing that the Galois theory of algebraic equations as commonly presented seems artificial, abstract, and intricate, we have been led in the following paper to attempt to present in a clear, tangible fashion the general, fundamental principles involved in the algebraic solution of equations. In carrying out this aim we have found it necessary to generalize certain methods of procedure still more than is done in the extant treatments of this subject, to formulate some of the theorems differently, and most of all to define the Galois group of an equation from an entirely new point of view.Includes bibliographical reference

Dynamic Capabilities for Managing Emerging Technologies

    Get PDF
__Abstract__ The advancement of information and communication technologies has brought a digital age, where massive computing power, high speed and ubiquitous access to internet and more recently Cloud Computing Technology are expected to transform a wide range of organizations, industries, and societies. The complexities and uncertainties associated with such a transformation process generate numerous puzzling questions for practitioners and academic researchers. How can organizations overcome rigidities in their resources and routines and adapt in line with the requirements of such technological change? What are the distinct characteristics of the established firms that are more successful in maintaining their competiveness during and after the transformation process? This dissertation combines multiple data sources concerning organizational adoption of Cloud Computing. It includes data from a 4-year intensive filed study, multiple comparative case studies, and a survey among Dutch companies, to provide a basis for better understanding of the micro-foundations of organizational capabilities for managing emerging technologies. Drawing on the literature on dynamic capabilities, this dissertation provides a more complete picture of the drivers of effective response to a technological change through investigation of the interplay between structures, routines, and managerial cognition. In this dissertation, first an investigation on the processes of organizational adaptation in response to the technological change is provided. I discuss what type of managerial initiatives are needed for fostering effective adoption of emerging technologies and what are the key determinants and managerial roles for realizing those initiatives. Second, I investigate the relationship between structure, strategic intent, and technology driven business model innovation and argue that, rather than any particular structural form, structural alteration may be crucial for enabling transition to a new business model. Third, I discuss the important role of involvement and close interaction with the customers in giving rise to managerial attention and initiatives that will in turn support exploratory behavior in emerging technology fields. Lastly, the interplay between formalization, centralization, and managerial attention in enabling early sensing and seizing of emerging technologies has been investigated. The findings illustrate how different organizational characteristics may influence the degree of dependence to managerial attention for responding to technological change. The dissertation as whole provides new insights on the origins and outcomes of dynamic capabilities for managing emerging technologies

Experimental Study of Machine-Learning-Based Detection and Identification of Physical-Layer Attacks in Optical Networks

    Get PDF
Optical networks are critical infrastructure supporting vital services and are vulnerable to different types of malicious attacks targeting service disruption at the optical layer. Due to the various attack techniques causing diverse physical- layer effects, as well as the limitations and sparse placement of optical performance monitoring devices, such attacks are difficult to detect, and their signatures are unknown. This paper presents a Machine Learning (ML) framework for detection and identification of physical-layer attacks, based on experimental attack traces from an operator field-deployed testbed with coherent receivers. We perform in-band and out-of-band jamming signal insertion attacks, as well as polarization modulation attacks, each with varying intensities. We then evaluate 8 different ML classifiers in terms of their accuracy, and scalability in processing experimental data. The optical parameters critical for accurate attack identification are identified and the generalization of the models is validated. Results indicate that Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) achieve 99.9% accuracy in attack type and intensity classification, and are capable of processing 1 million samples in less than 10 seconds
