The Center Conjecture for spherical buildings of types F4 and E6
We prove that a convex subcomplex of a spherical building of type F4 or E6 is
a subbuilding or the automorphisms of the subcomplex fix a point on it. Our
approach is differential-geometric and based on the theory of metric spaces
with curvature bounded above. We use these techniques also to give another
proof of the same result for the spherical buildings of classical type.Comment: 34 pages. An intrinsic version of the results has been added. Proof

Customer emotions in service failure and recovery encounters
Emotions play a significant role in the workplace, and considerable attention has been given to the study of employee emotions. Customers also play a central function in organizations, but much less is known about customer emotions. This chapter reviews the growing literature on customer emotions in employeeâcustomer interfaces with a focus on service failure and recovery encounters, where emotions are heightened. It highlights emerging themes and key findings, addresses the measurement, modeling, and management of customer emotions, and identifies future research streams. Attention is given to emotional contagion, relationships between affective and cognitive processes, customer anger, customer rage, and individual differences
The On-orbit Calibrations for the Fermi Large Area Telescope
The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on--board the Fermi Gamma ray Space Telescope
began its on--orbit operations on June 23, 2008. Calibrations, defined in a
generic sense, correspond to synchronization of trigger signals, optimization
of delays for latching data, determination of detector thresholds, gains and
responses, evaluation of the perimeter of the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA),
measurements of live time, of absolute time, and internal and spacecraft
boresight alignments. Here we describe on orbit calibration results obtained
using known astrophysical sources, galactic cosmic rays, and charge injection
into the front-end electronics of each detector. Instrument response functions
will be described in a separate publication. This paper demonstrates the
stability of calibrations and describes minor changes observed since launch.
These results have been used to calibrate the LAT datasets to be publicly

Genetic loci associated with prevalent and incident myocardial infarction and coronary heart disease in the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) Consortium
Background
Genome-wide association studies have identified multiple genomic loci associated with coronary artery disease, but most are common variants in non-coding regions that provide limited information on causal genes and etiology of the disease. To overcome the limited scope
that common variants provide, we focused our investigation on low-frequency and rare
sequence variations primarily residing in coding regions of the genome.
Methods and results
Using samples of individuals of European ancestry from ten cohorts within the Cohorts for
Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) consortium, both crosssectional and prospective analyses were conducted to examine associations between
genetic variants and myocardial infarction (MI), coronary heart disease (CHD), and allcause mortality following these events. For prevalent events, a total of 27,349 participants of
European ancestry, including 1831 prevalent MI cases and 2518 prevalent CHD cases were
used. For incident cases, a total of 55,736 participants of European ancestry were included
(3,031 incident MI cases and 5,425 incident CHD cases). There were 1,860 all-cause
deaths among the 3,751 MI and CHD cases from six cohorts that contributed to the analysis
of all-cause mortality. Single variant and gene-based analyses were performed separately
in each cohort and then meta-analyzed for each outcome. A low-frequency intronic variant
(rs988583) in PLCL1 was significantly associated with prevalent MI (OR = 1.80, 95% confidence interval: 1.43, 2.27; P = 7.12
Genome-wide meta-analysis of muscle weakness identifies 15 susceptibility loci in older men and women
Low muscle strength is an important heritable indicator of poor health linked to morbidity and mortality in older people. In a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of 256,523 Europeans aged 60 years and over from 22 cohorts we identify 15 loci associated with muscle weakness (European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People definition: n = 48,596 cases, 18.9% of total), including 12 loci not implicated in previous analyses of continuous measures of grip strength. Loci include genes reportedly involved in autoimmune disease (HLA-DQA1p = 4 Ă 10â17), arthritis (GDF5p = 4 Ă 10â13), cell cycle control and cancer protection, regulation of transcription, and others involved in the development and maintenance of the musculoskeletal system. Using Mendelian randomization we report possible overlapping causal pathways, including diabetes susceptibility, haematological parameters, and the immune system. We conclude that muscle weakness in older adults has distinct mechanisms from continuous strength, including several pathways considered to be hallmarks of ageing
