Cartridge firing device designed for attachment, release and ejection of a satellite

    Get PDF
The device functions were performed by a one-piece unit with resulting performances which were of interest regarding the satellite attachment and the accuracies of the path and velocity during separation and ejection. A gain in weight may be obtained relative to the conventional device used, i.e. maintenance belt, belt unlocking device, pusher spring, and cartridge fired pusher

Félix González-Torres: palavras sob a luz do campo de ouro

    Get PDF

Total energy expenditure in obese Kuwaiti primary school children assessed by the doubly-labelled water technique

    Get PDF
The aim of this pilot study was to assess body composition and total energy expenditure (TEE) in 35 obese 7–9 years old Kuwaiti children (18 girls and 17 boys). Total body water (TBW) and TEE were assessed by doubly-labeled water technique. TBW was derived from the intercept of the elimination rate of deuterium and TEE from the difference in elimination rates of 18O and deuterium. TBW was used to estimate fat-free mass (FFM), using hydration factors for different ages and gender. Fat mass (FM) was calculated as the difference between body weight and FFM. Body weight was not statistically different but TBW was significantly higher (p = 0.018) in boys (44.9% ± 3.3%) than girls (42.4% ± 3.0%), while girls had significantly higher estimated FM (45.2 ± 3.9 weight % versus 41.6% ± 4.3%; p = 0.014). TEE was significantly higher in boys (2395 ± 349 kcal/day) compared with girls (1978 ± 169 kcal/day); p = 0.001. Estimated physical activity level (PAL) was significantly higher in boys; 1.61 ± 0.167 versus 1.51 ± 0.870; p = 0.034. Our results provide the first dataset of TEE in 7–9 years old obese Kuwaiti children and highlight important gender differences to be considered during the development of school based interventions targeted to combat childhood obesity

Liquidity constraints and time non-separable preferences: simulating models with large state spaces

    Get PDF
This paper presents an alternative method for the stochastic simulation of nonlinear and possibly non-differentiable models with large state spaces. We compare our method to other existing methods, and show that the accuracy is satisfactory. We then use the method to analyze the features of an intertemporal optimizing consumption-saving model, when the utility function is time non-separable and when liquidity constraints are imposed. Two non-separabilities are studied, habit persistence and durability of the commodity. As the model has no closed-form solution, we compute deterministic and stochastic solution paths. It enables us to compare income and consumption volatility, and to describe the density of consumption under the different hypotheses on the utility function

Electron collisions with the CF radicals using the R-matrix method

    Get PDF
The R-matrix method is used to treat electron collisions with the diatomic radical CF as a function of internuclear separation, R. These calculations concentrate on obtaining low-energy (< 10 eV) elastic and excitation cross sections of the five lowest-lying electronically excited states of the symmetries X2 Π, 4 Σ-, 2 Σ+, 2Δ, 2 Σ- and 4 Π, with vertical excitation energies in the range of 2.86–10 eV. Special measures are required to treat 2 Σ+, which is Rydberg-like for R < 2.6 a0. Three shape resonances of 3Σ-,1 Δ and 1 Σ+ symmetries are fitted. The 1 Δ and 1 Σ+ resonances have a position of 0.91 and 2.19 eV respectively at the equilibrium bond length of CF. The position of the 3 Σ- resonance is close to zero at Re = 2.44 a0 and the resonance becomes bound at larger R. Two weakly bound states of symmetries 3Π and 1 Π were also detected at the equilibrium geometry. Calculations which stretch the C–F bond show that the 1Δ resonance becomes bound at R = 3.3 a0 and 1 Σ+ at larger R

Thermal capacitator design rationale. Part 1: Thermal and mechanical property data for selected materials potentially useful in thermal capacitor design and construction

    Get PDF
The thermal properties of paraffin hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon mixtures which may be used as the phase change material (PCM) in thermal capacitors are discussed. The paraffin hydrocarbons selected for consideration are those in the range from C11H24 (n-Undecane) to C20H42 (n-Eicosane). A limited amount of data is included concerning other properties of paraffin hydrocarbons and the thermal and mechanical properties of several aluminum alloys which may find application as constructional materials. Data concerning the melting temperature, transition temperature, latent heat of fusion, heat of transition, specific heat, and thermal conductivity of pure and commercial grades of paraffin hydrocarbons are given. An index of companies capable of producing paraffin hydrocarbons and information concerning the availability of various grades (purity levels) is provided

This report provides structural proposals to end the school-to-prison pipeline in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and to build a national movement to stop the mass incarceration of Black and Latino Communities. It analyzes the LAUSD and the Los Angles School Police Department's (LASPD) citation and arrest patterns for the school years of 2011-2013 through the lens of race, gender, age, and neighborhood impacts
