Cosmic Rays from Heavy Dark Matter from the Galactic Center

The gamma-ray fluxes observed by the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) from the J1745-290 Galactic Center source is well fitted by the secondary photons coming from Dark Matter (DM) annihilation in particle-antiparticle standard model pairs over a diffuse power-law background. The spectral features of the signal are consistent with different channels: light quarks, electro-weak gauge bosons and top-antitop production. The amount of photons and morphology of the signal localized within a region of few parsecs, require compressed DM profiles as those resulting from baryonic contraction, which offer large enhancements in the signal over DM alone simulations. The fits return a heavy WIMP, with a mass above 10 TeV, but well below the unitarity limit for thermal relic annihilation. The fitted background spectral index is compatible with the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) data from the same region. This possibility can be potentially tested with the observations of other high energy cosmic rays.Comment: Proceedings of the European Physical Society Conference on High Energy Physics EPS-HEP2013, 18-24 July 2013, Stockholm (Sweden

Identifying dietary differences between Scotland and England:a rapid review of the literature

Rates of premature mortality have been higher in Scotland than in England since the 1970s. Given the known association of diet with chronic disease, the study objective was to identify and synthesise evidence on current and historical differences in food and nutrient intakes in Scotland and England.A rapid review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature was carried out. After an initial scoping search, Medline, CINAHL, Embase and Web of Science were searched. Relevant grey literature was also included. Inclusion criteria were: any date; measures of dietary intake; representative populations; cross-sectional or observational cohort studies; and English-language publications. Study quality was assessed using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-sectional Studies. A narrative synthesis of extracted information was conducted.Fifty publications and reports were included in the review. Results indicated that children and adults in Scotland had lower intakes of vegetables and vitamins compared with those living in England. Higher intakes of salt in Scotland were also identified. Data were limited by small Scottish samples, difficulty in finding England-level data, lack of statistical testing and adjustment for key confounders.Further investigation of adequately powered and analysed surveys is required to examine more fully dietary differences between Scotland and England. This would provide greater insight into potential causes of excess mortality in Scotland compared with England and suitable policy recommendations to address these inequalities

Fil: Rodríguez, Viviana L. Soft L_e-L_mu-L_tau flavour symmetry breaking and sterile neutrino keV Dark Matter

We discuss how a Le−Lμ−LτL_e-L_\mu-L_\tau flavour symmetry that is softly broken leads to keV sterile neutrinos, which are a prime candidate for Warm Dark Matter. This is to our knowledge the first model where flavour symmetries are applied simultaneously to active and sterile neutrinos explaining at the same time active neutrino properties and this peculiar Dark Matter scenario. The essential point is that different scales of the symmetry breaking and the symmetry preserving entries in the mass matrix lead to one right-handed neutrino which is nearly massless compared to the other two. Furthermore, we naturally predict vanishing θ13\theta_{13} and maximal θ23\theta_{23}, while the correct value of θ12\theta_{12} must come from the mixing of the charged leptons. We can furthermore predict an exact mass spectrum for the light neutrinos, which will be testable in the very near future.Comment: 14 page

AbstractLeishmaniasis is an endemic disease in 98 countries around the world, with 12 million cases and more than 350 million people at risk of acquiring infection. Available drugs such as pentavalent antimony, amphotericin B and miltefosine, have been the treatment of choice for all clinical forms of leishmaniasis. However, disadvantages such as high cost, duration of treatment and toxicity, promote non-adherence or neglect of treatment and the emergence of resistant or less sensitive to medicine. These problems have stimulated the search of new therapeutic alternatives that are affordable, without adverse effects and favorable cosmetic results. Phototherapy is a procedure in which an agent photosensitizer when activated by light leads to production reactive oxygen species. This therapy used in the treatment of various forms of cancer, herpes and other and localized infectious diseases, is emerging as a promising strategy for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis with large advantages such as low cost, easy handling and total resolution injury, becoming a very promising alternative compared to the traditional treatment approaches
