Orbital thermal analysis of lattice structured spacecraft using color video display techniques
A color video display technique is demonstrated as a tool for rapid determination of thermal problems during the preliminary design of complex space systems. A thermal analysis is presented for the lattice-structured Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) spacecraft at 32 points in a baseline non Sun-synchronous (60 deg inclination) orbit. Large temperature variations (on the order of 150 K) were observed on the majority of the members. A gradual decrease in temperature was observed as the spacecraft traversed the Earth's shadow, followed by a sudden rise in temperature (100 K) as the spacecraft exited the shadow. Heating rate and temperature histories of selected members and color graphic displays of temperatures on the spacecraft are presented

Child Exploitation and the FIFA World Cup: A review of risks and protective interventions
This review was commissioned by the Child Abuse Programme (CAP) of Oak Foundation, a large international philanthropic organisation. It forms part of CAP’s effort to win societal rejection of practices such as the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents around major sporting events (MSEs), and to embed prevention and protection from exploitation as a permanent concern for global sports-related bodies. This review is intended to inform action in countries that host MSEs and to provide some suggestions on how hosting countries can avoid past pitfalls and mistakes in relation to child exploitation, especially economic and sexual exploitation. Importantly, it also acts as a call to action by those responsible for commissioning and staging MSEs, such as FIFA and the IOC, to anticipate, prepare for and adopt risk mitigation strategies and interventions. Positive leadership from these culturally powerful bodies could prove decisive in shifting hearts, minds and actions in the direction of improved safety for children
Oceanic stochastic parametrizations in a seasonal forecast system
We study the impact of three stochastic parametrizations in the ocean
component of a coupled model, on forecast reliability over seasonal timescales.
The relative impacts of these schemes upon the ocean mean state and ensemble
spread are analyzed. The oceanic variability induced by the atmospheric forcing
of the coupled system is, in most regions, the major source of ensemble spread.
The largest impact on spread and bias came from the Stochastically Perturbed
Parametrization Tendency (SPPT) scheme - which has proven particularly
effective in the atmosphere. The key regions affected are eddy-active regions,
namely the western boundary currents and the Southern Ocean. However, unlike
its impact in the atmosphere, SPPT in the ocean did not result in a significant
decrease in forecast error. Whilst there are good grounds for implementing
stochastic schemes in ocean models, our results suggest that they will have to
be more sophisticated. Some suggestions for next-generation stochastic schemes

First year student expectations: Results from a university-wide student survey
Although much has been written on the first-year experience of students at higher education institutions, less attention has been directed to the expectations of students when they enter an institution for the first time. This paper provides additional insights into the expectations of students at an Australian university and highlights areas in which students’ expectations may not necessarily align with the realities of common university practices. Does the Supreme Court Follow the Economic Returns? A Response to A Macrotheory of the Court
Today, there is a widespread idea that parents need to learn how to carry out their roles as parents. Practices of parental learning operate throughout society. This article deals with one particular practice of parental learning, namely nanny TV, and the way in which ideal parents are constructed through such programmes. The point of departure is SOS family, a series broadcast on Swedish television in 2008. Proceeding from the theorising of governmentality developed in the wake of the work of Michel Foucault, we analyse the parental ideals conveyed in the series, as an example of the way parents are constituted as subjects in the ‘advanced liberal society’ of today. The ideal parent is a subject who, guided by the coach, is constantly endeavouring to achieve a makeover. The objective of this endeavour, however, is self-control, whereby the parents will in the end become their own coaches.
Precision metering of microliter volumes of biological fluids in micro-gravity
Concepts were demonstrated and investigated for transferring accurately known and reproducible microliter volumes of biological fluids from sample container onto dry chemistry slides in microgravity environment. Specific liquid transfer tip designs were compared. Information was obtained for design of a liquid sample handling system to enable clinical chemical analysis in microgravity. Disposable pipet tips and pipet devices that were designed to transfer microliter volumes of biological fluid from a (test tube) sample container in 1-G environment were used during microgravity periods of parabolic trajectories of the KC-135 aircraft. The transfer process was recorded using charge coupled device camera and video cassette equipment. Metering behavior of water, a synthetic aqueous protein solution, and anticoagulated human blood was compared. Transfer of these liquids to 2 substrate materials representative of rapidly wettable and slowly wettable dry chemistry slide surface was compared
Partial suppression of the radial orbit instability in stellar systems
It is well known that the simple criterion proposed originally by Polyachenko
and Shukhman (1981) for the onset of the radial orbit instability, although
being generally a useful tool, faces significant exceptions both on the side of
mildly anisotropic systems (with some that can be proved to be unstable) and on
the side of strongly anisotropic models (with some that can be shown to be
stable). In this paper we address two issues: Are there processes of
collisionless collapse that can lead to equilibria of the exceptional type?
What is the intrinsic structural property that is responsible for the sometimes
noted exceptional stability behavior? To clarify these issues, we have
performed a series of simulations of collisionless collapse that start from
homogeneous, highly symmetrized, cold initial conditions and, because of such
special conditions, are characterized by very little mixing. For these runs,
the end-states can be associated with large values of the global pressure
anisotropy parameter up to 2K_r/K_T \approx 2.75. The highly anisotropic
equilibrium states thus constructed show no significant traces of radial
anisotropy in their central region, with a very sharp transition to a radially
anisotropic envelope occurring well inside the half-mass radius (around 0.2
r_M). To check whether the existence of such almost perfectly isotropic
"nucleus" might be responsible for the apparent suppression of the radial orbit
instability, we could not resort to equilibrium models with the above
characteristics and with analytically available distribution function; instead,
we studied and confirmed the stability of configurations with those
characteristics by initializing N-body approximate equilibria (with given

Academic literacy diagnostic assessment in the first semester of first year at university
One vital aspect of the first semester of the first year at university is how academic literacy expectations are made explicit though teaching and assessment practices at the disciplinary level. This paper describes how an academic literacy diagnostic process, and the MASUS tool, was used to ascertain the academic literacy profile of a cohort of undergraduate nursing students [N=569] at the beginning and end of their first semester. Key findings of this quantitative descriptive case study were that only just over half of commencing students possessed appropriate academic literacy skills in all four aspects of the diagnostic and nearly 20% scored in the lowest band—suggesting difficulty with multiple aspects of academic literacy. By the end of semester, 77% of the students who had scored in the lowest band of the MASUS at the beginning of the semester had improved their scores to the middle or highest band, and 73% of them eventually attained a pass or higher grade for the course. The findings of this study suggest that large-scale academic literacy diagnostic assessment, when embedded and contextualized within a course of study, is an effective means of providing the early feedback and targeted support that many commencing university students need
