Copepoda and Cladocera Populations of Red Rock Reservoir, Iowa from April to November, 1970

The effects of nutrient renewal, conservation pool water level, and the average weekly discharge rate on the species composition, relative abundance, and population fluctuations of the Copepoda and Cladocera of Red Rock Reservoir were determined. The average retention time (flushing rate) was 11.2 days. Twenty-one species were identified with the dominants being Cyclops spp., Diaptomus spp., Daphnia spp., Bosmina longirostris, Moina micrura, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, and Diaphano-soma spp. Three distinct seasonal peaks in population growth were noted. Population fluctuations showed slight correlation with temperature, transparency, discharge rate, nutrient levels and no relationship was seen with water level. A time interval of 18 to 32 days occurred between high nitrate and phosphate levels and population abundance peaks. Species composition showed distinct seasonal changes. Population numbers began increasing at the dam area and continued upstream with declines following the reverse pattern

A Qualitative Metasynthesis of Published Research Exploring the Pregnancy and Resettlement Experience Among Refugee Women

The number of refugees and asylum seekers throughout the world continues to increase, leading to increasing challenges in meeting healthcare needs of these individuals. Women’s antenatal health is of particular concern due to their vulnerability to sexual violence and the substantial proportion of refugees consisting of women and girls of or nearing reproductive age. The purpose of this qualitative metasynthesis was to integrate and interpret findings from previously published research reports in which authors explored aspects of pregnancy among resettled refugee women. Following a systematic search process, we used Dedoose qualitative data analysis software to manage the process of extracting and condensing data from primary sources. We developed themes including: comparing pregnancy care in resettlement with care at home; navigating unfamiliar language and cultural practices; making meaning through pregnancy and associated healthcare experiences. Our analysis revealed authors used thematic analysis regardless of research design, limiting the range of reported findings. Prior research focused on identifying challenges to pregnancy in resettlement; our findings expand this by considering how women navigate and make meaning from challenges. Service providers might encourage mentally healthy resettlement by guiding refugees to consider differences in an open-minded rather than judgmental attitude that respects old and new cultures

Implementation and validation of a CubeSat laser transmitter

The paper presents implementation and validation results for a CubeSat-scale laser transmitter. The master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) design produces a 1550 nm, 200mW average power optical signal through the use of a directly modulated laser diode and a commercial fiber amplifier. The prototype design produces high-fidelity M-ary pulse position modulated (PPM) waveforms (M=8 to 128), targeting data rates > 10 Mbit/s while meeting a constraining 8W power allocation. We also present the implementation of an avalanche photodiode (APD) receiver with measured transmitter-to-receiver performance within 3 dB of theory. Via loopback, the compact receiver design can provide built-in self-test and calibration capabilities, and supports incremental on-orbit testing of the design

Knee Pain Predicts Subsequent Shoulder Pain and the Association Is Mediated by Leg Weakness: Longitudinal Observational Data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative

Objective: To assess whether the ‘spread’ of joint pain is related to pain-associated muscle loss in one joint leading to increased loading and subsequent pain in other joints. Methods: Associations between persistent knee pain (pain in one or two knees over years 0-3 versus no persistent pain) and incident shoulder pain at year 4 were examined in participants from the longitudinal NIH Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI). Associations were assessed using log multinomial modelling, adjusted for age, sex, BMI, depression score, other lower limb pain and baseline leg weakness (difficulty standing from a sitting position). Results: In older adults with clinically significant knee OA or at risk of knee OA (n=3486), the number of painful joints increased yearly, from 2.1 joints (95% CI 2.0, 2.2) at baseline increasing by 5.2% (95% CI 2.2%, 8.3%) at year 4. Shoulders were the next most commonly affected joint after knees (28.5%). Persistent pain in 1 or 2 knees increased risk of bilateral shoulder pain at year 4 (1 knee RR 1.59 (95% CI 0.97, 2.61); 2 knees RR 2.02 (1.17, 3.49)) after adjustment for confounders. Further adjustment for leg weakness attenuated effect sizes (1 knee RR 1.13 (95% CI 0.60, 2.11); 2 knees RR 1.44 (0.75, 2.77)), indicating mediation by functional leg weakness. Conclusions: Spread of joint pain is not random. Persistently painful knees predict new bilateral shoulder pain, which is likely mediated by leg weakness; suggesting that biomechanical factors influence the spread of pain
