    Use of Hydration Inhibitors to Improve Bond Durability of Aluminum Adhesive Joints

    An investigation is conducted of the mechanisms by which nitrilotris methylene phosphonic acid (NTMP) and related compounds are adsorbed onto oxidized aluminum surfaces to inhibit hydration and increase the durability of adhesive bonds formed with inhibitor-treated panels. P - O - Al bonds are identified as the basis of adsorption, and it is found that water initially adsorbed onto the etched aluminum surfaces is displaced by the NTMP. The hydration of the NTMP-treated surfaces occurs in three stages, namely the reverisble physisorption of water, the slow dissolution of NTMP followed by rapid hydration of the freshly exposed Al2O3 to AlOOH and further hydration of the surface to Al(OH)3.     Particulate Fillers in Thermoplastics

    The characteristics of particulate filled thermoplastics are determined by four factors: component properties, composition, structure and interfacial interactions. The most important filler characteristics are particle size, size distribution, specific surface area and particle shape, while the main matrix property is stiffness. Segregation, aggregation and the orientation of anisotropic particles determine structure. Interfacial interactions lead to the formation of a stiff interphase considerably influencing properties. Interactions are changed by surface modification, which must be always system specific and selected according to its goal. Under the effect of external load inhomogeneous stress distribution develops around heterogeneities, which initiate local micromechanical deformation processes determining the macroscopic properties of the composites

    El libro reúne trabajos en los que se exponen resultados de investigaciones presentadas por investigadores de Argentina, Chile, Brasil, España, Italia y Alemania en el XII Congreso de la Sociedad Argentina de Lingüística (SAL), Bicentenario: la renovación de la palabra, realizado en Mendoza, Argentina, entre el 6 y el 9 de abril de 2010.     An acceptability test was conducted for Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris). and Guinea grass hybrid (Pannicum maximum). Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) was used as the standard for comparison. A 3 X 3 latin-square design was followed. The experiment was made during the more or less recognized growing seasons in the Island, and the ages tested were 49 to 55, 63 to 69, 77 to 83, 83 to 89, 97 to 103, and 111 to 117 days. Total consumption of chopped green material and dry-matter intake per cow, per day, per 100 pounds of live weight, were used as criteria for comparison. All three grasses were equally accepted on the basis of dry-matter intake per 100 pounds of live weight. Other important observations for 1. Cows consumed more fresh material from grass of lower dry-matter content, giving an erroneous impression of better acceptability. 2. The dry-matter intake per 100 pounds of live weight increased significantly as the percentage of dry matter in the grasses increased up to about 89 days old. From the results of this study it appears that cows consume less fresh material from a grass containing more dry matter, on a percentage basis. More information is needed to reach definite conclusions on this point.Resumen en español
