    Making mentoring work: The need for rewiring epistemology

    To help produce expert coaches at both participation and performance levels, a number of governing bodies have established coach mentoring systems. In light of the limited literature on coach mentoring, as well as the risks of superficial treatment by coach education systems, this paper therefore critically discusses the role of the mentor in coach development, the nature of the mentor-mentee relationship and, most specifically, how expertise in the mentee may best be developed. If mentors are to be effective in developing expert coaches then we consequently argue that a focus on personal epistemology is required. On this basis, we present a framework that conceptualizes mentee development on this level through a step by step progression, rather than unrealistic and unachievable leap toward expertise. Finally, we consider the resulting implications for practice and research with respect to one-on-one mentoring, communities of practice, and formal coach education

    A graphene transmon operating at 1 T

    A superconducting transmon qubit resilient to strong magnetic fields is an important component for proposed topological and hybrid quantum computing (QC) schemes. Transmon qubits consist of a Josephson junction (JJ) shunted by a large capacitance, coupled to a high quality factor superconducting resonator. In conventional transmon devices, the JJ is made from an Al/AlOx_x/Al tunnel junction which ceases operation above the critical magnetic field of Al, 10 mT. Alternative junction technologies are therefore required to push the operation of these qubits into strong magnetic fields. Graphene JJs are one such candidate due to their high quality, ballistic transport and electrically tunable critical current densities. Importantly the monolayer structure of graphene protects the JJ from orbital interference effects that would otherwise inhibit operation at high magnetic field. Here we report the integration of ballistic graphene JJs into microwave frequency superconducting circuits to create the first graphene transmons. The electric tunability allows the characteristic band dispersion of graphene to be resolved via dispersive microwave spectroscopy. We demonstrate that the device is insensitive to the applied field and perform energy level spectroscopy of the transmon at 1 T, more than an order of magnitude higher than previous studies.Comment: attached supplementary materia

    Observation of asymmetric line shapes in precision microwave spectroscopy of the positronium 2<sup>3</sup>S<sub>1</sub>→2<sup>3</sup>P<sub>J</sub> (J=1,2) fine-structure intervals

    We report new measurements of the positronium (Ps) 23S1→23PJ fine-structure intervals, ÎœJ (J=0,1,2). In the experiments, Ps atoms, optically excited to the radiatively metastable 23S1 level, flew through microwave radiation fields tuned to drive transitions to the short-lived 23PJ levels, which were detected via the time spectrum of subsequent ground-state Ps annihilation radiation. Both the Îœ1 and Îœ2 line shapes were found to be asymmetric, which, in the absence of a complete line-shape model, prevents accurate determination of these fine-structure intervals. Conversely, the Îœ0 line shape did not exhibit any significant asymmetry; the observed interval, however, was found to disagree with QED theory by 4.2 standard deviations

    Rural and urban differences in stage at diagnosis of colorectal and lung cancers

    There is evidence that patients living in outlying areas have poorer survival from cancer. This study set out to investigate whether they have more advanced disease at diagnosis. Case notes of 1323 patients in north and northeast Scotland who were diagnosed with lung or colorectal cancer in 1995 or 1996 were reviewed. Of patients with lung cancer, 42% (69/164) living 58 km or more from a cancer centre had disseminated disease at diagnosis compared to 33% (71/215) living within 5 km. For colorectal cancer the respective figures were 24% (38/161) and 16% (31/193). For both cancers combined, the adjusted odds ratio for disseminated disease at diagnosis in furthest group compared to the closest group was 1.59 (P = 0.037). Of 198 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer in the closest group, 56 (28%) had limited disease (stage I or II) at diagnosis compared to 23 of 165 (14%) of the furthest group (P = 0.002). The respective figures for Dukes A and B colorectal cancer were 101 of 196 (52%) and 67 of 172 (39%) (P = 0.025). These findings suggest that patients who live remote from cities and the associated cancer centres have poorer chances of survival from lung or colorectal cancer because of more advanced disease at diagnosis.     Using Stories in Coach Education

    The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how storied representations of research can be used as an effective pedagogical tool in coach education. During a series of continuing professional development seminars for professional golf coaches, we presented our research in the form of stories and poems which were created in an effort to evoke and communicate the lived experiences of elite professional golfers. Following these presentations, we obtained written responses to the stories from 53 experienced coaches who attended the seminars. Analysis of this data revealed three ways in which coaches responded to the stories: (i) questioning; (ii) summarising; and (iii) incorporating. We conclude that these responses illustrate the potential of storied forms of representation to enhance professional development through stimulating reflective practice and increasing understanding of holistic, person-centred approaches to coaching athletes in high-performance sport

    Reducing MCPA herbicide pollution at catchment scale using an agri-environmental scheme

    Publication history: Accepted - 16 May 2022; Published online - 20 May 2022.In river catchments used as drinking water sources, high pesticide concentrations in abstracted waters require an expensive treatment step prior to supply. The acid herbicide 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) is particularly problematic as it is highly mobile in the soil-water environment following application. Here, an agri-environmental scheme (AES) was introduced to a large-scale catchment (384 km2) to potentially reduce the burden of pesticides in the water treatment process. The main measure offered was contractor application of glyphosate by weed wiping as a substitute for boom spraying of MCPA, supported by educational and advisory activities. A combined innovation applied in the assessment was, i) a full before-after-control-impact (BACI) framework over four peak application seasons (April to October 2018 to 2021) where a neighbouring catchment (386 km2) did not have an AES and, ii) an enhanced monitoring approach where river discharge and MCPA concentrations were measured synchronously in each catchment. During peak application periods the sample resolution was every 7 h, and daily during quiescent winter periods. This sampling approach enabled flow- and time-weighted concentrations to be established, and a detailed record of export loads. These loads were up to 0.242 kg km−2 yr−1, and over an order of magnitude higher than previously reported in the literature. Despite this, and accounting for inter-annual and seasonal variations in river discharges, the AES catchment indicated a reduction in both flow- and time-weighted MCPA concentration of up to 21% and 24%, respectively, compared to the control catchment. No pollution swapping was detected. Nevertheless, the percentage of MCPA occurrences above a 0.1 ÎŒg L−1 threshold did not reduce and so the need for treatment was not fully resolved. Although the work highlights the advantages of catchment management approaches for pollution reduction in source water catchments, it also indicates that maximising participation will be essential for future AES.This work was carried out as part of Source to Tap (IVA5018), a project supported by the European Union's INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB)

    Phase I dose-escalation and pharmacokinetic study of a novel folate analogue AG2034

    The novel folate analogue AG2034, which was designed as an inhibitor of GARFT (glycinamide ribonucleotide formyltransferase), was evaluated in this phase I study under the auspices of The Cancer Research Campaign, UK. AG2034 blocks de novo purine synthesis through inhibition of GARFT. A total of 28 patients with histologically proven intractable cancers were enrolled. AG2034 was administered as a short intravenous infusion once every 3 weeks. 8 dose levels ranging from 1–11 mg/m2 were evaluated with patients receiving up to 6 cycles. Dose-limiting toxicities in the form of mucositis, diarrhoea and vomiting were observed at doses of 6 mg/m2 and above. Significant levels of thrombocytopenia, neutropenia and anaemia were also recorded. Other sporadic toxicities included fatigue and myalgia. The MTD with this schedule of AG2034 was 5 mg/m2. Most side effects occurred more frequently with cumulative dosing. In keeping with this, pharmacokinetic analysis revealed evidence of drug accumulation. The AG2034 AUC0–24 increased by a median of 184% (range 20–389%) from cycle 1 to 3 in all 10 patients examined.
