    Una de las problemáticas que actualmente enfrenta el sistema universitario argentino radica en las bajas tasas de retención en la etapa inicial de los estudios superiores. La misma constituye una muestra de la desarticulación de niveles en el sistema educativo nacional y se ha convertido en uno de los objetivos a mejorar tanto por parte de las universidades como de la Secretaría de Políticas Universitarias de la Nación. Los colegios de enseñanza media dependientes de universidades nacionales son una potencial herramienta de articulación Universidad - Escuela Media que puede y debe ser mejor aprovechada. Con la intención de reflexionar sobre la temática planteada se describen las exigencias de ingreso a algunas facultades cuya oferta de carreras se inicia con asignaturas de las ciencias exactas y naturales. Las estrategias de ingreso desarrolladas por estas instituciones indican que la Universidad se está haciendo cargo de las falencias de la escuela media asumiendo el ingreso como una asignatura inicial de sus carreras.     North African Populations Carry the Signature of Admixture with Neandertals

    Abstract One of the main findings derived from the analysis of the Neandertal genome was the evidence for admixture between Neandertals and non-African modern humans. An alternative scenario is that the ancestral population of non-Africans was closer to Neandertals than to Africans because of ancient population substructure. Thus, the study of North African populations is crucial for testing both hypotheses. We analyzed a total of 780,000 SNPs in 125 individuals representing seven different North African locations and searched for their ancestral/derived state in comparison to different human populations and Neandertals. We found that North African populations have a significant excess of derived alleles shared with Neandertals, when compared to sub-Saharan Africans. This excess is similar to that found in non-African humans, a fact that can be interpreted as a sign of Neandertal admixture. Furthermore, the Neandertal's genetic signal is higher in populations with a local, pre-Neolithic North African ancestry. Therefore, the detected ancient admixture is not due to recent Near Eastern or European migrations. Sub-Saharan populations are the only ones not affected by the admixture event with Neandertals

    Diagnostic and Therapeutic Algorithm for Appendiceal Tumors and Pseudomyxoma Peritonei: A Consensus of the Peritoneal Malignancies Oncoteam of the Italian Society of Surgical Oncology (SICO)

    Aim: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an uncommon pathology, and its rarity causes a lack of scientific evidence, precluding the design of a prospective trial. A diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm (DTA) is necessary in order to standardize the disease treatment while balancing optimal patient management and the correct use of resources. The Consensus of the Italian Society of Surgical Oncology (SICO) Oncoteam aims at defining a diagnostic and therapeutic pathway for PMP and appendiceal primary tumors applicable in Italian healthcare. Method: The consensus panel included 10 delegated representatives of oncological referral centers for Peritoneal Surface Malignancies (PSM) affiliated to the SICO PSM Oncoteam. A list of statements regarding the DTA of patients with PMP was prepared according to recommendations based on the review of the literature and expert opinion. Results: A consensus was obtained on 33 of the 34 statements linked to the DTA; two flowcharts regarding the management of primary appendiceal cancer and peritoneal disease were approved. Conclusion: Currently, consensus has been reached on pathological classification, preoperative evaluation, cytoreductive surgery technical detail, and systemic treatment; some controversies still exist regarding the exclusion criteria for HIPEC treatment. A shared Italian model of DTA is an essential tool to ensure the appropriateness and equity of treatment for these patients

    This article assesses the merits of opposing National Assembly reports into the coup against President Chavez of Venezuela in April 2002. Looking at the historical context and the content of the reports, it argues that the two opposing accounts reflect a class division that has always existed in Venezuela but has been officially denied. It concludes that a possible exit from the stalemate could be that the opposition accept the reality of this class division and therefore the Chavez government as a legitimate representative of the popular classes. This, however, is unlikely in the present circumstances

    Hair analysis following chronic smoked-drugs-of-abuse exposure in adults and their toddler: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Over the past two decades, the study of chronic cocaine and crack cocaine exposure in the pediatric population has been focused on the potential adverse effects, especially in the prenatal period and early childhood. Non-invasive biological matrices have become an essential tool for the assessment of a long-term history of drug of abuse exposure.</p> <p>Case report</p> <p>We analyze the significance of different biomarker values in hair after chronic crack exposure in a two-year-old Caucasian girl and her parents, who are self-reported crack smokers. The level of benzoylecgonine, the principal metabolite of cocaine, was determined in segmented hair samples (0 cm to 3 cm from the scalp, and > 3 cm from the scalp) following washing to exclude external contamination. Benzoylecgonine was detectable in high concentrations in the child's hair, at 1.9 ng/mg and 7.04 ng/mg, respectively. Benzoylecgonine was also present in the maternal and paternal hair samples at 7.88 ng/mg and 6.39 ng/mg, and 13.06 ng/mg and 12.97 ng/mg, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Based on the data from this case and from previously published poisoning cases, as well as on the experience of our research group, we conclude that, using similar matrices for the study of chronic drug exposure, children present with a higher cocaine concentration in hair and they experience more serious deleterious acute effects, probably due to a different and slower cocaine metabolism. Consequently, children must be not exposed to secondhand crack smoke under any circumstance.</p

    Assistive environments: Integration of heterogenous networks to support Ambient Intelligence

    In the last decade, Assistive Technology researchers have studied and developed accessible and adaptable environments intended to enhance the autonomy and the quality of life of the people with disabilities and elderly people. Their efforts, technologically rooted in the Ubiquitous Computing technologies, are firmly supported by the Ambient Intelligence concept. In the assistive scenario the main problem that researchers have to face is the integration of diverse local and remote services that were previously provided through different network technologies.
