A critical narrative qualitative methodology is presented as a possible and coherent format with the theoretical bases of feminisms, to show the political and ethical importance of feminist projects, especially the commitment to the social change of feminist methodology, and to the Research in general. A unified model for BAM function that takes into account type Vc secretion and species differences in BAM composition

Transmembrane proteins in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria are almost exclusively β-barrels. They are inserted into the outer membrane by a conserved and essential protein complex called the BAM (for β-barrel assembly machinery). In this commentary, we summarize current research into the mechanism of this protein complex and how it relates to type V secretion. Type V secretion systems are autotransporters that all contain a β-barrel transmembrane domain inserted by BAM. In type Vc systems, this domain is a homotrimer. We argue that none of the current models are sufficient to explain BAM function particularly regarding type Vc secretion. We also find that current models based on the well-studied model system Escherichia coli mostly ignore the pronounced differences in BAM composition between different bacterial species. We propose a more holistic view on how all OMPs, including autotransporters, are incorporated into the lipid bilayer

Parameterizations of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) embedded in numerical weather prediction models are crucial in the simulation of local meteorology and require a special investigation. In this study we evaluate simulations at 1 km horizontal resolution using six PBL schemes of the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) by comparison to observations performed in a coastal port-industrial area (Civitavecchia) on the Tyrrhenian coast of Central Italy. During the measurement campaign (April 2016) three types of atmospheric circulation regimes were identified: “breeze”, “jet” and “synoptic”. Some generalizations can be inferred from the results, despite the variety of settings analyzed (two sites, three regimes in both day and night conditions). Our results show that the temperature simulation is much more sensitive to the configuration at night than during the day, especially on breeze days, when the occurrence of stable boundary layer is favored. For wind speed, non-local schemes are very similar to each other, unlike the local closure schemes. The use of the urban Building Environment Parameterization (BEP) significantly improves the simulation of the 2 m temperature during the “jet” evenings and nights, while it entails a further overestimation of the temperature during the “breeze” days leading to a reduction of the bias

Diagnostic features of SARS-COVID-2-positive patients: A rapid review and meta-analysis

Aims: To identify the main diagnostic features of SARS-CoV-2-positive patients at the time of hospitalisation and their prevalence. Background: Since the COVID-19 outbreak in China in December of 2019, several studies attempted to identify the epidemiological, viral and clinical characteristics of SARS-CoV-2. Given the rapid widespread transmission of the COVID-19 disease worldwide, a more comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of its features is needed to better inform nurses, clinicians and public health policy makers. Methods: A rapid review and meta-analysis were carried out to identify the main diagnostic features of SARS-CoV-2-positive patients at the time of hospitalisation. All case series, cross-sectional, case\u2013control and cohort studies published from 01/01/2020 till 30/06/2020 in English and Chinese that stated all or at least two of the outcomes of interest (clinical features, laboratory and radiological findings) were included. We performed a random-effects model meta-analysis to calculate pooled prevalence and 95% confidence intervals. Conduction of the review adheres to the PRISMA checklist. Results: 21 studies involving 8837 patients were included in the quantitative synthesis. Fever, cough and fatigue were the most common clinical features, while the most relevant laboratory abnormalities at the time of hospitalisation were lymphopenia, elevated C-reactive protein and lactate dehydrogenase. CT images showed a bilateral lung involvement, with ground glass infiltrates and patchy shadows on most patients. Conclusion: This review provides an up-to-date synthesis of main diagnostic features of SARS-CoV-2-positive patients at the time of hospitalisation. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Our findings could provide guidance for nurses and clinicians to early identification of positive patients at the time of the hospitalisation through a complete definition of main clinical features, laboratory and CT findings

Diabetic education in nursing: A Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis

    No full text
Aim: This concept analysis aims to clarify the concept of diabetic education in nursing to provide guidance for the further conceptualization and clarification of diabetic education in nursing. Background: Patient education is a fundamental component of diabetes care. Nurses have taken up a major role in educating people with diabetes to manage their conditions. However, the exact meaning of diabetic education in nursing remains challenging. Design: Rodgers' evolutionary method of concept analysis was performed to explore the concept of diabetic education in nursing. Data Source: We conducted a literature search on Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), MedLine, and PsycInfo for works published until October 2020 using “patient education,” “diabetes,” and “nursing” as key terms. Results: The concept analysis revealed that key attributes of diabetic education in nursing include patient-centered and interactive approaches, planning, and problem solving. Antecedents related to individuals with diabetes are their backgrounds, needs, and motivations, while the antecedents related to nurses are experience and attitude. Finally, three different consequences of the concept emerged: an increase in knowledge and skills, a behavioral change, and the improvement of clinical outcomes

Aerosol optical characteristics in the urban area of Rome, Italy, and their impact on the UV index

The impact of the aerosol optical properties on the ultraviolet index (UVI) in the urban area of Rome is investigated in this study. In particular, the influence of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and single scattering albedo (SSA), estimated at the wavelength of 340nm, and of the Ångström exponent, calculated in the range 340-500nm, over a period of 11 years (2010-2020) in the months from March to September are analyzed. The UVI is monitored by a Brewer spectrophotometer, whereas measurements of the direct Sun and diffuse sky irradiances are performed by a co-located PREDE-POM sun-sky radiometer of the ESR/SKYNET network; the aerosol optical properties are obtained by the Skyrad MRIv2 retrieval. A novel method, based on physical principles and easily adaptable to other contexts, is developed to extrapolate the aerosol properties to the UV range during periods when only visible to near-infrared measurements are available. The retrievals from the sun-sky radiometer are consistent with the chemical characterization of urban PM10 (particulate matter 10mm or less in diameter) samples collected during an intensive field campaign held in summer 2011 at the same site (URBan Sustainability Related to Observed and Monitored Aerosol - URBS ROMA). The PM macro components identified during the campaign are grouped in order to evaluate the contribution of the main macro sources (soil, sea, secondary inorganic, organics, and traffic) whose relative role is indeed expected to strongly affect the aerosol absorption capability. The surface forcing efficiency, calculated as the change in the UV index for a unit AOD variation, shows that AOD is the primary parameter affecting the surface irradiance under clear-sky conditions in Rome. SSA and the Ångström exponent are also identified as secondary influencing factors, i.e., the surface forcing efficiency is found to be greater for smaller zenith angles and for larger and more absorbent particles in the UV range (such as, e.g., mineral dust)

The association between patient activation and healthcare resources utilization: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Objectives To measure the association between patient activation and hospitalization or emergency department (ED) visits among adults with chronic diseases. Study design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods A systematic review of English articles was performed using the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Embase. Articles were searched from 2005 until July 2021. Observational studies that measured the association between patient activation, measured by the Patient Activation Measure (PAM), and hospitalization or ED visits among adults with chronic or multichronic diseases were included. Pairs of reviewers independently screened the studies and extracted data for qualitative and quantitative synthesis. The methodological quality was assessed using the Quality in Prognostic Studies (QUIPS) tool. Results A total of nine observational studies (153,121 participants) were included in the qualitative synthesis, whereas six were pooled in the quantitative synthesis (151,359 participants). High levels of patient activation were significantly associated with a reduced risk for both hospitalizations (RR [95% CI] = 0.69 [0.61; 0.77], I2 = 78%) and ED visits (RR [95% CI] = 0.76 [0.70; 0.84], I2 = 72%). Conclusions Our findings suggest the existence of an inverse association between patient activation and healthcare resources utilization. Further observational studies are needed to fully comprehend the magnitude of this association
