    Nonlinear sensors: an approach to the residence time detection strategy.

    The monitoring of the residence time difference in bistable sensors has been recently proposed as a valid scheme for improving the detection capabilities of sensors as diverse as fluxgate magnetometers, ferroelectric sensors and mechanical sensors. In this paper we propose an approach to the residence time based detection strategy based on the measurement of the slope m of the sensor output integral. We demonstrate that such a method, far from degrading the detection performances can provide an easier way to realize fast and reliable sensors without the computationally demanding task related with the computation of the residence time difference. We introduce the receiver operating characteristic curve as a quantitative estimator for the comparison of the two methods and show that the detector performances increase with increasing the periodic bias amplitude A up to a maximum value. This condition has potentially relevant consequences in the future detectors design

    Phononic canonical quasicrystalline waveguides

    The dynamic behavior of the class of periodic waveguides whose unit cells are generated through a quasicrystalline sequence can be interpreted geometrically in terms of a trace map that embodies the recursive rule obeyed by traces of the transmission matrices. We introduce the concept of canonical quasicrystalline waveguides, for which the orbits predicted by the trace map at specific frequencies, called canonical frequencies, are periodic. In particular, there exist three families of canonical waveguides. The theory reveals that for those (i) the frequency spectra are periodic and the periodicity depends on the canonical frequencies, (ii) a set of multiple periodic orbits exists at frequencies that differ from the canonical ones, and (iii) perturbation of the periodic orbit and linearization of the trace map define a scaling parameter, linked to the golden ratio, which governs the self-similar structure of the spectra. The periodicity of the waveguide responses is experimentally verified on finite specimens composed of selected canonical unit cells

    Ga2O3 polymorphs: Tailoring the epitaxial growth conditions

    Gallium oxide is a wide bandgap n-type semiconductor highly interesting for optoelectronic applications (e.g., power electronics and solar blind UV photodetectors). Besides its most thermodynamically stable monoclinic β phase, Ga2O3 can crystallize in different polymorphs; among them the corundum α and the orthorhombic ϵ phases are the most promising ones. In this review we focus on the main aspects that promote the nucleation and stable growth of these Ga2O3 polymorphs. Particular emphasis is given to the ϵ phase since it is recently gaining increasing attention in the scientific community because of: (i) its higher lattice symmetry with respect to β-Ga2O3, which could favour the realization of heterostructures, (ii) the possibility to be grown on cheap sapphire substrates and (iii) its peculiar piezoelectric properties. While the growth of β-Ga2O3 is widely studied and understood, a thorough and comprehensive analysis of the chemical and physical aspects that allow for the stabilization of the metastable Ga2O3 phases with different synthesis methods is still missing. Therefore, the present review aims at filling this gap, by analysing the relevant growth parameters for several growth techniques (MOVPE, HVPE, mist-CVD, MBE, and PLD), highlighting similarities and differences, looking for a unified framework to understand the growth and nucleation of different Ga2O3 polymorphs. As a conclusion, we highlight practical guidelines for the deposition of the different Ga2O3 polymorphs with all the discussed thin film growth techniques

    Lo scavo condotto tra Corso Porta Reno e Via Vaspergolo, nel centro storico di Ferrara, ha portato alla luce un vano sotterraneo rettangolare denominato “Vasca dello Specchio”, utilizzato per lo smaltimento dei rifiuti tra XIV e XV secolo. Il riempimento, in parte già analizzato e pubblicato, è stato oggetto di nuove analisi carpologiche. I semi e i frutti, conservati prevalentemente per sommersione e in ottimo stato, sono complessivamente oltre 400.000 e la lista floristica comprende 168 taxa. La maggior parte dei reperti appartiene a piante coltivate/coltivabili o spontanee correlate all’uomo, che forniscono nuove informazioni sulla dieta vegetale e sull’ambiente urbano della Ferrara basso-medievale/rinascimentale.     Translation, adaptation and validation of the Roland-Morris questionnaire - Brazil Roland-Morris

    The purpose of the present study was to translate the Roland-Morris (RM) questionnaire into Brazilian-Portuguese and adapt and validate it. First 3 English teachers independently translated the original questionnaire into Brazilian-Portuguese and a consensus version was generated. Later, 3 other translators, blind to the original questionnaire, performed a back translation. This version was then compared with the original English questionnaire. Discrepancies were discussed and solved by a panel of 3 rheumatologists and the final Brazilian version was established (Brazil-RM). This version was then pretested on 30 chronic low back pain patients consecutively selected from the spine disorders outpatient clinic. In addition to the traditional clinical outcome measures, the Brazil-RM, a 6-point pain scale (from no pain to unbearable pain), and its numerical pain rating scale (PS) (0 to 5) and a visual analog scale (VAS) (0 to 10) were administered twice by one interviewer (1 week apart) and once by one independent interviewer. Spearman's correlation coefficient (SCC) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) were computed to assess test-retest and interobserver reliability. Cross-sectional construct validity was evaluated using the SCC. In the pretesting session, all questions were well understood by the patients. The mean time of questionnaire administration was 4 min and 53 s. The SCC and ICC were 0.88 (P<0.01) and 0.94, respectively, for the test-retest reliability and 0.86 (P<0.01) and 0.95, respectively, for interobserver reliability. The correlation coefficient was 0.80 (P<0.01) between the PS and Brazil-RM score and 0.79 (P<0.01) between the VAS and Brazil-RM score.     Bacillus spp. Probiotic Strains as a Potential Tool for Limiting the Use of Antibiotics, and Improving the Growth and Health of Pigs and Chickens

    The pressure to increasingly optimize the breeding of livestock monogastric animals resulted in antimicrobials often being misused in an attempt to improve growth performance and counteract diseases in these animals, leading to an increase in the problem of antibiotic resistance. To tackle this problem, the use of probiotics, also known as direct in-feed microbials (DFM), seems to be one of the most promising strategies. Among probiotics, the interest in Bacillus strains has been intensively increased in recent decades in pigs and poultry. The aim of the present review was to evaluate the effectiveness of Bacillus strains as probiotics and as a potential strategy for reducing the misuse of antibiotics in monogastric animals. Thus, the potential modes of action, and the effects on the performance and health of pigs (weaning pigs, lactation and gestation sows) and broilers are discussed. These searches yielded 131 articles (published before January 2021). The present review showed that Bacillus strains could favor growth in terms of the average daily gain (ADG) of post-weaning piglets and broilers, and reduce the incidence of post-weaning diarrhea in pigs by 30% and mortality in broilers by 6–8%. The benefits of Bacillus strains on these parameters showed results comparable to the benefit obtained by the use of antibiotics. Furthermore, the use of Bacillus strains gives promising results in enhancing the local adaptative immune response and in reducing the oxidative stress of broilers. Fewer data were available regarding the effect on sows. Discordant effects have been reported regarding the effect on body weight (BW) and feed intake while a number of studies have supported the hypothesis that feeding probiotics to sows could benefit their reproductive performance, namely the BW and ADG of the litters. Taken all the above-mentioned facts together, this review confirmed the effectiveness of Bacillus strains as probiotics in young pigs and broilers, favoring their health and contributing to a reduction in the misuse of direct in-feed antibiotics. The continuous development and research regarding probiotics will support a decrease in the misuse of antibiotics in livestock production in order to endorse a more sustainable rearing system in the near future

    Constraint-based modeling identifies new putative targets to fight colistin-resistant A. baumannii infections

    Acinetobacter baumannii is a clinical threat to human health, causing major infection outbreaks worldwide. As new drugs against Gram-negative bacteria do not seem to be forthcoming, and due to the microbial capability of acquiring multi-resistance, there is an urgent need for novel therapeutic targets. Here we have derived a list of new potential targets by means of metabolic reconstruction and modelling of A. baumannii ATCC 19606. By integrating constraint-based modelling with gene expression data, we simulated microbial growth in normal and stressful conditions (i.e. following antibiotic exposure). This allowed us to describe the metabolic reprogramming that occurs in this bacterium when treated with colistin (the currently adopted last-line treatment) and identify a set of genes that are primary targets for developing new drugs against A. baumannii, including colistin-resistant strains. It can be anticipated that the metabolic model presented herein will represent a solid and reliable resource for the future treatment of A. baumannii infections
