    Lifting the veil of secrecy: maternal and neonatal outcome of oocyte donation pregnancies in Germany

    Background: In Germany, performing fertility procedures involving oocyte donation is illegal, as stated by the Embryo Protection Law. Nonetheless, in our clinical routine we attend to a steadily rising number of pregnant women, who have sought oocyte donation abroad. Due to the legal circumstances many women opt to keep the origin of their pregnancy a secret. However, studies have shown, that oocyte donation is an independent risk factor for the development of pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate maternal and neonatal outcomes of oocyte donation pregnancies in three large obstetric care units in Berlin, Germany. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed all available medical data on oocyte donation pregnancies at Charite University hospital, Vivantes Hospital Friedrichshain, and Neukoelln in the German capital. Results: We included 115 oocyte donation (OD) pregnancies in the present study. Our data are based on 62 singleton, 44 twin, 7 triplet, and 2 quadruplet oocyte donation pregnancies. According to our data, oocyte donation pregnancies are associated with a high risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcome, i.e., hypertension in pregnancy, preterm delivery, Cesarean section as mode of delivery, and increased peripartum hemorrhage. Conclusion: Although oocyte donation is prohibited by German law, many couples go abroad to seek reproductive measures using oocyte donation after former treatment options have failed. OD pregnancies are associated with a high risk of preeclampsia, C-section as mode of delivery, and peripartum hemorrhage. Detailed knowledge of the associated risks is of utmost importance to both the patient and the treating physician and midwife

    Preliminary measurements of lumbar spine kinematics and stiffness

    The purpose of the presented study was the experimental measurement of lumbar spine stiffness and its range of motion. The dependence of torsion moment of lumbar spine segment on deflection of flexion, extension and torsion was observed during experiments. Stiffness of spine segment was determined from measured data. Human lumbar spine was used for verification of the experimental technique. The sample consisted of one lumbar vertebrae composed by five vertebral bodies and four intervertebral discs. All muscles were removed, however all ligaments were preserved. Experiments were ca rried out on the test system MTS 858.2 MiniBionix, where loading by axial force and torsion moment is possible at the same time. Special Modular Bionix Spine Test Fixator, attached to the test system was used for the measurements. Loading was controlled kinematically (gradual turning) by keeping the axial force equal zero. Measurement was timedependent. The results of these experiments are going to be used as input data for creating a model of artificial lumbar spine and new type of artificial disc replacement

    A Robust Solution Procedure for Hyperelastic Solids with Large Boundary Deformation

    Compressible Mooney-Rivlin theory has been used to model hyperelastic solids, such as rubber and porous polymers, and more recently for the modeling of soft tissues for biomedical tissues, undergoing large elastic deformations. We propose a solution procedure for Lagrangian finite element discretization of a static nonlinear compressible Mooney-Rivlin hyperelastic solid. We consider the case in which the boundary condition is a large prescribed deformation, so that mesh tangling becomes an obstacle for straightforward algorithms. Our solution procedure involves a largely geometric procedure to untangle the mesh: solution of a sequence of linear systems to obtain initial guesses for interior nodal positions for which no element is inverted. After the mesh is untangled, we take Newton iterations to converge to a mechanical equilibrium. The Newton iterations are safeguarded by a line search similar to one used in optimization. Our computational results indicate that the algorithm is up to 70 times faster than a straightforward Newton continuation procedure and is also more robust (i.e., able to tolerate much larger deformations). For a few extremely large deformations, the deformed mesh could only be computed through the use of an expensive Newton continuation method while using a tight convergence tolerance and taking very small steps.Comment: Revision of earlier version of paper. Предметом исследования является практическое применение результатов индикатора при изучении фильтрационной неоднородности нефтяного месторождения. Целью данной работы является анализ фильтрационных свойств коллекторов, изучение геологического строения пластов, путем анализа результатов индикаторных исследований, используемых на коллекторе. Результаты этой работы показывают, что исследование трассировки оказалось жизнеспособным инструментом или инструментом для изучения характеристик нефтяных скважин, и были сделаны предложения по совершенствованию этого метода при изучении неоднородности фильтрации месторождения.The work consists of 143 pages, 9 tables and 39 figures. The subject of the study is the practical application of the results of the indicator studies of filtration heterogeneity of an oil field. The results of this work show that the tracer method has proven to be a viable tool for studying the characteristics of oil wells, and suggestions have been made to improve this method in studying the filtration heterogeneity of oil and gas fields

    Abstract Here we report a novel method for detection of single individual particles and viruses by means of surface plasmon assisted optical microscopy. The size of the studied objects may be at least one order of magnitude less than the wavelength of the light used for the imaging. This allows studying of nanoparticles and viruses in natural surrounding (enviroment) by means of cheap and well-developed visible-light sources. The signal reflected from the nanoparticle is enhanced due to excitation of the surface plasmon polariton waves. Combination with modern image-processing procedure allows automatic detection of nano-sized objects

    A mass spectrometry imaging based approach for prognosis prediction in UICC stage I/II colon cancer

    Simple Summary Tumor treatment is heavily dictated by the tumor progression status. However, in colon cancer, it is difficult to predict disease progression in the early stages. In this study, we have employed a proteomic analysis using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI). MALDI-MSI is a technique that measures the molecular content of (tumor) tissue. We analyzed tumor samples of 276 patients. If the patients developed distant metastasis, they were considered to have a more aggressive tumor type than the patients that did not. In this comparative study, we have developed bioinformatics methods that can predict the tendency of tumor progression and advance a couple of molecules that could be used as prognostic markers of colon cancer. The prediction of tumor progression can help to choose a more adequate treatment for each individual patient. Abstract Currently, pathological evaluation of stage I/II colon cancer, following the Union Internationale Contre Le Cancer (UICC) guidelines, is insufficient to identify patients that would benefit from adjuvant treatment. In our study, we analyzed tissue samples from 276 patients with colon cancer utilizing mass spectrometry imaging. Two distinct approaches are herein presented for data processing and analysis. In one approach, four different machine learning algorithms were applied to predict the tendency to develop metastasis, which yielded accuracies over 90% for three of the models. In the other approach, 1007 m/z features were evaluated with regards to their prognostic capabilities, yielding two m/z features as promising prognostic markers. One feature was identified as a fragment from collagen (collagen 3A1), hinting that a higher collagen content within the tumor is associated with poorer outcomes. Identification of proteins that reflect changes in the tumor and its microenvironment could give a very much-needed prediction of a patient’s prognosis, and subsequently assist in the choice of a more adequate treatment

    The FLASHForward project at DESY is a pioneering plasma-wakefield acceleration experiment that aims to produce, in a few centimetres of ionised hydrogen, beams with energy of order GeV that are of quality sufficient to be used in a free-electron laser. The plasma wave will be driven by high-current density electron beams from the FLASH linear accelerator and will explore both external and internal witness-beam injection techniques. The plasma is created by ionising a gas in a gas cell with a multi-TW laser system, which can also be used to provide optical diagnostics of the plasma and electron beams due to the <30 fs synchronisation between the laser and the driving electron beam.     Adiponectin, free fatty acids, and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes and acute coronary syndrome

    OBJECTIVE: In observational cohorts, adiponectin is inversely associated and free fatty acids (FFAs) are directly associated with incident coronary heart disease (CHD). Adiponectin tends to be reduced and FFAs elevated in type 2 diabetes. We investigated relationships of adiponectin and FFA and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) and death in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and type 2 diabetes using data from the AleCardio trial, which compared the PPAR-α/γ agonist aleglitazar with placebo. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using Cox regression adjusted for demographic, laboratory, and treatment variables, we determined associations of baseline adiponectin and FFAs, or the change in adiponectin and FFAs from baseline, with MACEs (cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke) and death. RESULTS: A twofold higher baseline adiponectin (n = 6,998) was directly associated with risk of MACEs (hazard ratio [HR] 1.17 [95% CI 1.08-1.27]) and death (HR 1.53 [95% CI 1.35-1.73]). A doubling of adiponectin from baseline to month 3 (n = 6,325) was also associated with risk of death (HR 1.20 [95% CI 1.03-1.41]). Baseline FFAs (n = 7,038), but not change in FFAs from baseline (n = 6,365), were directly associated with greater risk of MACEs and death. There were no interactions with study treatment. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to prior observational data for incident CHD, adiponectin is prospectively associated with MACEs and death in patients with type 2 diabetes and ACS, and an increase in adiponectin from baseline is directly related to death. These findings raise the possibility that adiponectin has different effects in patients with type 2 diabetes and ACS than in populations without prevalent cardiovascular disease. Consistent with prior data, FFAs are directly associated with adverse outcomes
