Accidental falls in hospitalized children: an analysis of the vulnerabilities linked to the presence of caregivers

Introduction. This study stemmed from the data gathered by a research conducted by the coordinator of the Department of Healthcare Services and a group of nurses involved in a research on accidental falls in hospitalized children at the ?G. Gaslini? Children?s Hospital and Scientific Research Institute in Genoa, Italy. The first retrospective study evaluated the accidental falls in hospitalized children referred to the three-year period 2003- 2006, while the second perspective study, referred to the trimester March-May 2007, found that the main cause of falls in children was parent?s distraction. Methods. The method adopted in the first phase of our study was a proactive risk analysis (The Basics of Healthcare Failure Mode and Effect Analysis), identified in the first place by the VA National Centre for Patient Safety and applied to the ?Child and parent hospital admission process?. This proactive risk analysis has proven to be very effective in preventing the risk of accidental falls in hospitalized children through effective communication and educational interventions. The second phase of our study consisted of two Focus Groups for accidental traumatic events. Results. The analysis of the results of the study showed how effective communication is instrumental, not only to have a better awareness of the children and their parents during their stay in hospital, but also to implement educational sessions on prevention to reduce the risk of accidental traumatic events. Conclusions. The present study contributes to improve safety and the quality of care by motivating nurses to keep their attention high on falls in hospitalized children, by monitoring and the development of new risk assessment tools

Functional fish: improving nutrition for the elderly

    Get PDF
Elder people need highly digestible foods that can also provide health benefits even to those suffering from chronic diseases. Furthermore, such foods should be palatable as well as familiar for elder consumers. Fish is a high-protein, low-fat food that potentially provides a range of health promoting effects which may be further improved with suitable approaches in the production systems. The present mini-review intends to report possible aquaculture interventions to enhance the positive impact of fish on elder health and to promote its function in terms of prevention and recovery of specific diseases. Some fish species during their lifespan experience periods of food restrictions that can be mimicked in aquaculture without affecting fish welfare. Under these circumstances fish can modify the fatty acid profile and increase the use of muscle proteins to fulfill their energy requirements, by activation of muscle endogenous proteases. Degradation of muscle proteins can enhance their digestibility and possibly the release of encrypted bioactive peptides, showing a plethora of biological actions, including the antihypertensive activity. The degree of myofibrillar protein degradation and the fatty acid profile of fish fillet can then be managed by suitable and sustainable feeding protocols in the context of farming conditions

CMHC Adherence to National Mental Health Plan Standards in Italy: A Survey 30 Years After National Reform Law

none6OBJECTIVE: The PROG-CSM (Progetto Centri di Salute Mentale) survey was conducted in all Italian community mental health centers (CMHCs) with the aim of evaluating the extent to which these services adhered to the standards defined by the Italian National Mental Health Plan 1998-2000. METHODS: The policy recommendations of the Italian National Mental Health Plan were translated by a multidisciplinary group of experts into key indicators, including continuity of care, coordination with other community-based services, accessibility, implementation of specific programs, and provision of care. RESULTS: There was high adherence to the standards of the National Mental Health Plan in continuity of care and coordination with other services, but there were lower levels of accessibility and implementation of specific projects. CONCLUSIONS: CMHCs were sufficiently developed throughout Italy, and continuity of care and service coordination levels were satisfactory; however, adherence to the standards was unrelated to the duration of activity of the CMHCs.noneMunizza C.; Gonella R.; Pinciaroli L.; Rucci P.; Picci RL.; Tibaldi G.Munizza C.; Gonella R.; Pinciaroli L.; Rucci P.; Picci RL.; Tibaldi G

Geosite assessment and communication: a review

    Get PDF
This work is aimed at reviewing the current state of the art in geosite selection, assessment, and communication. We first highlight the main papers that have defined paramount concepts such as geodiversity, geoheritage, and geosites. We then delve into the theoretical principles and guidelines that have been proposed over the last twenty years by researchers who have thoroughly illustrated how to individuate and assess geosites. In doing so, we illustrate notable field examples of applications of qualitative and quantitative assessments of geosites in places such as Serbia, India, Iceland, Ecuador, Sardinia (Italy), Egypt, Tasmania (Australia), and Brazil. The third part of this work is dedicated to illustrating a list (by no means exhaustive) of works that have tried to come up with innovative tools, strategies, and solutions to promote and communicate geosites. From our work, it appears that geosites can be extremely effective as fully fledged outreach tools capable of bridging the gap between Earth science and the lay public

PROMON: a profile monitor of software applications

    Get PDF
Software techniques can be efficiently used to increase the dependability of safety-critical applications. Many approaches are based on information redundancy to prevent data and code corruption during the software execution. This paper presents PROMON, a C++ library that exploits a new methodology based on the concept of “Programming by Contract” to detect system malfunctions. Resorting to assertions, pre- and post-conditions, and marginal programmer interventions, PROMON-based applications can reach high level of dependability

Active ageing and living condition of older persons across Italian regions

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Springer via the DOI in this recordThe ageing of the population is reshaping a large part of the economic and social order, with pervasive and transversal consequences that reflect on production, consumption, labour, and especially on welfare. To govern a development of this kind, it is essential to have an innovative approach, capable of stimulating targeted and systematic policies, and capable of facing the structural change of ageing, transforming it from a burden to a resource for our society. Since the beginning of the new millennium, there has been a gradual attention to the phenomenon of demographic ageing at an international level, which has prompted the European Union to proclaim 2012 as the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. Recommendations from the international organizations to individual countries on adopting active ageing policies led to the creation of the Active Ageing Index (AAI). Istat has extensively contributed to the AAI interacting with its international partners (UNECE and the European Commission). There is no doubt that AAI is a useful tool, both for measuring achieved progress in the area of active ageing, and for promoting the implementation and the evaluation of policies aimed at improving any potential aspect that does not show satisfactory results. AAI consists of four dimensions and 22 indicators. Using nationally representative data, it was first disseminated in Italy as the product of an experiment intended to provide overall and individual domain data on a subnational level placing Istat at the forefront among European statistical institutes
