Scattering by nonspherical systems
Scattering by nonspherical particles with size of order of wavelength - scattering by axisymmetric penetrable particles using approximate matching of boundary condition
MulCh: a Multi-layer Channel Router using One, Two, and Three Layer Partitions
Chameleon, a channel router for three layers of interconnect, has been implemented to accept specification of an arbitrary number of layers. Chameleon is based on a strategy of decomposing the multilayer problem into two- and three-layer problems in which one of the layers is reserved primarily for vertical wire runs and the other layer(s) for horizontal runs. In some situations, however, it is advantageous to consider also layers that allow the routing of entire nets, using both horizontal and vertical wires. MulCh is a multilayer channel router that extends the algorithms of Chameleon in this direction. MulCh can route channels with any number of layers and automatically chooses a good assignment of wiring strategies to the different layers. In test cases, MulCh shows significant improvement over Chameleon in terms of channel width, net length, and number of vias
Denominators of Eisenstein cohomology classes for GL_2 over imaginary quadratic fields
We study the arithmetic of Eisenstein cohomology classes (in the sense of G.
Harder) for symmetric spaces associated to GL_2 over imaginary quadratic
fields. We prove in many cases a lower bound on their denominator in terms of a
special L-value of a Hecke character providing evidence for a conjecture of
Harder that the denominator is given by this L-value. We also prove under some
additional assumptions that the restriction of the classes to the boundary of
the Borel-Serre compactification of the spaces is integral. Such classes are
interesting for their use in congruences with cuspidal classes to prove
connections between the special L-value and the size of the Selmer group of the
Hecke character.Comment: 37 pages; strengthened integrality result (Proposition 16), corrected
statement of Theorem 3, and revised introductio
Infrared receivers for low background astronomy: Incoherent detectors and coherent devices from one micrometer to one millimeter
The status of incoherent detectors and coherent receivers over the infrared wavelength range from one micrometer to one millimeter is described. General principles of infrared receivers are included, and photon detectors, bolometers, coherent receivers, and important supporting technologies are discussed, with emphasis on their suitability for low background astronomical applications. Broad recommendations are presented and specific opportunities are identified for development of improved devices

Spacelike Ricci Inheritance Vectors in a Model of String Cloud and String Fluid Stress Tensor
We study the consequences of the existence of spacelike Ricci inheritance
vectors (SpRIVs) parallel to for model of string cloud and string fluid
stress tensor in the context of general relativity. Necessary and sufficient
conditions are derived for a spacetime with a model of string cloud and string
fluid stress tensor to admit a SpRIV and a SpRIV which is also a spacelike
conformal Killing vector (SpCKV). Also, some results are obtained.Comment: 11 page
Crustal heterogeneity of the moon viewed from the Galileo SSI camera: Lunar sample calibrations and compositional implications
Summaries are given of the spectral calibration, compositional parameters, nearside color, and limb and farside color of the Moon. The farside of the Moon, a large area of lunar crust, is dominated by heavily cratered terrain and basin deposits that represent the products of the first half billion years of crustal evolution. Continuing analysis of the returned lunar samples suggest a magma ocean and/or serial magmatism model for evolution of the primordial lunar crust. However, testing either hypothesis requires compositional information about the crustal stratigraphy and lateral heterogeneity. Resolution of this important planetary science issue is dependent on additional data. New Galileo multispectral images indicate previously unknown local and regional compositional diversity of the farside crust. Future analysis will focus on individual features and a more detailed assessment of crustal stratigraphy and heterogeneity
Macroscopic properties of A-statistics
A-statistics is defined in the context of the Lie algebra sl(n+1). Some
thermal properties of A-statistics are investigated under the assumption that
the particles interact only via statistical interaction imposed by the Pauli
principle of A-statistics. Apart from the general case, three particular
examples are studied in more detail: (a) the particles have one and the same
energy and chemical potential; (b) equidistant energy spectrum; (c) two species
of particles with one and the same energy and chemical potential within each
class. The grand partition functions and the average number of particles are
among the thermodynamical quantities written down explicitly.Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures; to be published in J. Phys.
Finding an egg in a haystack: variation in chemical cue use by egg parasitoids of herbivorous insects
Egg parasitoids of herbivorous insects use an interplay of short -and long-range chemical cues emitted by hosts and host plants to find eggs to parasitize. Volatile compounds that attract egg parasitoids can be identified via behavioral assays and used to manipulate parasitoid behavior in the field for biological control of herbivorous pests. However, how and when a particular cue will be used varies over the life of an individual, as well as at and below species level. Future research should expand taxonomic coverage to explore variation in chemical cue use in more natural, dynamic settings. More nuanced understanding of the variability of egg parasitoid host-finding strategies will aid in disentangling the underlying genetics and further enhancing biological control
