Gravitational Anomaly and Hawking Radiation of Brane World Black Holes
We apply Wilczek and his collaborators' anomaly cancellation approach to the
3-dimensional Schwarzschild- and BTZ-like brane world black holes induced by
the generalized C metrics in the Randall-Sundrum scenario. Based on the fact
that the horizon of brane world black hole will extend into the bulk spacetime,
we do the calculation from the bulk generalized C metrics side and show that
this approach also reproduces the correct Hawking radiation for these brane
world black holes. Besides, since this approach does not involve the dynamical
equation, it also shows that the Hawking radiation is only a kinematic effect.Comment: 11 pages. v2: minor changes and references adde
Exploring interfacial exchange coupling and sublattice effect in heavy metal/ferrimagnetic insulator heterostructures using Hall measurements, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and neutron reflectometry
We use temperature-dependent Hall measurements to identify contributions of
spin Hall, magnetic proximity, and sublattice effects to the anomalous Hall
signal in heavy metal/ferrimagnetic insulator heterostructures with
perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. This approach enables detection of both the
magnetic proximity effect onset temperature and the magnetization compensation
temperature and provides essential information regarding the interfacial
exchange coupling. Onset of a magnetic proximity effect yields a local extremum
in the temperature-dependent anomalous Hall signal, which occurs at higher
temperature as magnetic insulator thickness increases. This magnetic proximity
effect onset occurs at much higher temperature in Pt than W. The magnetization
compensation point is identified by a sharp anomalous Hall sign change and
divergent coercive field. We directly probe the magnetic proximity effect using
x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and polarized neutron reflectometry, which
reveal an antiferromagnetic coupling between W and the magnetic insulator.
Finally, we summarize the exchange-coupling configurations and the anomalous
Hall-effect sign of the magnetized heavy metal in various heavy metal/magnetic
insulator heterostructures

An Updated Search of Steady TeV Ray Point Sources in Northern Hemisphere Using the Tibet Air Shower Array
Using the data taken from Tibet II High Density (HD) Array (1997
February-1999 September) and Tibet-III array (1999 November-2005 November), our
previous northern sky survey for TeV ray point sources has now been
updated by a factor of 2.8 improved statistics. From to
in declination (Dec) range, no new TeV ray point
sources with sufficiently high significance were identified while the
well-known Crab Nebula and Mrk421 remain to be the brightest TeV ray
sources within the field of view of the Tibet air shower array. Based on the
currently available data and at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), the flux upper
limits for different power law index assumption are re-derived, which are
approximately improved by 1.7 times as compared with our previous reported
limits.Comment: This paper has been accepted by hepn
Culture-Sex Interaction and the Self-Report Empathy in Australians and Mainland Chinese.
Empathy is the ability to understand and share other people's emotions. Researchers have debated whether Westerners and Asians differ in their self-report empathy. This study aimed to replicate a previously reported culture-sex interaction in self-report empathy using Australian and Mainland Chinese participants, to investigate the cultural differences in self-report empathy in each sex group, and to verify the moderated mediating effects of three empathy-related traits (i.e., independent self-construal, interdependent self-construal, and personal distress) on the cultural differences in self-report empathy in both sex groups. In this study, scores on two self-report questionnaires of empathy, namely, the Empathy Quotient (EQ) and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), were compared between 196 Australian Caucasian (101 males) and 211 Mainland Chinese (59 males) university students. Results first confirmed the significant culture-sex interaction and illustrated that the cultural differences in empathy scores were significant only for female (i.e., Australian females had higher scores than Mainland Chinese females) but not for male participants. Furthermore, results of moderated mediation analyses indicated that higher self-report empathy in both females and males was related to higher interdependent self-construal (exhibited by Mainland Chinese) and less personal distress (exhibited by Australians), and particularly in females, also related to higher independent self-construal (exhibited by Australian females). The current study is one of few studies that suggest cultural differences in empathy are dependent on the sex of the participant. Moreover, the current findings have added new insights into the explanation of cultural differences in empathy using personal distress and self-construal
Genome structure and evolutionary history of frankincense producing \u3ci\u3eBoswellia sacra\u3c/i\u3e
Boswellia sacra Flueck (family Burseraceae) tree is wounded to produce frankincense. We report its de novo assembled genome (667.8 Mb) comprising 18,564 high-confidence protein-encoding genes. Comparing conserved single-copy genes across eudicots suggest \u3e97% gene space assembly of B. sacra genome. Evolutionary history shows B. sacra gene-duplications derived from recent paralogous events and retained from ancient hexaploidy shared with other eudicots. The genome indicated a major expansion of Gypsy retroelements in last 2 million years. The B. sacra genetic diversity showed four clades intermixed with a primary genotype—dominating most resin-productive trees. Further, the stemtranscriptome revealed that wounding concurrently activates phytohormones signaling, cell wall fortification, and resin terpenoid biosynthesis pathways leading to the synthesis of boswellic acid—a key chemotaxonomic marker of Boswellia. The sequence datasets reported here will serve as a foundation to investigate the genetic determinants of frankincense and other resin-producing species in Burseraceae
Matricellular protein CCN3 mitigates abdominal aortic aneurysm
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality; however, the mechanisms that are involved in disease initiation and progression are incompletely understood. Extracellular matrix proteins play an integral role in modulating vascular homeostasis in health and disease. Here, we determined that the expression of the matricellular protein CCN3 is strongly reduced in rodent AAA models, including angiotensin II-induced AAA and elastase perfusion-stimulated AAA. CCN3 levels were also reduced in human AAA biopsies compared with those in controls. In murine models of induced AAA, germline deletion of Ccn3 resulted in severe phenotypes characterized by elastin fragmentation, vessel dilation, vascular inflammation, dissection, heightened ROS generation, and smooth muscle cell loss. Conversely, overexpression of CCN3 mitigated both elastase- and angiotensin II-induced AAA formation in mice. BM transplantation experiments suggested that the AAA phenotype of CCN3-deficient mice is intrinsic to the vasculature, as AAA was not exacerbated in WT animals that received CCN3-deficient BM and WT BM did not reduce AAA severity in CCN3-deficient mice. Genetic and pharmacological approaches implicated the ERK1/2 pathway as a critical regulator of CCN3-dependent AAA development. Together, these results demonstrate that CCN3 is a nodal regulator in AAA biology and identify CCN3 as a potential therapeutic target for vascular disease
High spatial and temporal resolution wide-field imaging of neuron activity using quantum NV-diamond
A quantitative understanding of the dynamics of biological neural networks is fundamental to gaining insight into information processing in the brain. While techniques exist to measure spatial or temporal properties of these networks, it remains a significant challenge to resolve the neural dynamics with subcellular spatial resolution. In this work we consider a fundamentally new form of wide-field imaging for neuronal networks based on the nanoscale magnetic field sensing properties of optically active spins in a diamond substrate. We analyse the sensitivity of the system to the magnetic field generated by an axon transmembrane potential and confirm these predictions experimentally using electronically-generated neuron signals. By numerical simulation of the time dependent transmembrane potential of a morphologically reconstructed hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neuron, we show that the imaging system is capable of imaging planar neuron activity non-invasively at millisecond temporal resolution and micron spatial resolution over wide-fields
Photonic chip-based low noise microwave oscillator
Numerous modern technologies are reliant on the low-phase noise and exquisite
timing stability of microwave signals. Substantial progress has been made in
the field of microwave photonics, whereby low noise microwave signals are
generated by the down-conversion of ultra-stable optical references using a
frequency comb. Such systems, however, are constructed with bulk or fiber
optics and are difficult to further reduce in size and power consumption. Our
work addresses this challenge by leveraging advances in integrated photonics to
demonstrate low-noise microwave generation via two-point optical frequency
division. Narrow linewidth self-injection locked integrated lasers are
stabilized to a miniature Fabry-P\'{e}rot cavity, and the frequency gap between
the lasers is divided with an efficient dark-soliton frequency comb. The
stabilized output of the microcomb is photodetected to produce a microwave
signal at 20 GHz with phase noise of -96 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz offset frequency that
decreases to -135 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset--values which are unprecedented for
an integrated photonic system. All photonic components can be heterogeneously
integrated on a single chip, providing a significant advance for the
application of photonics to high-precision navigation, communication and timing
systems
