    The Ethno- and Research History of the Lake Louise Field Station, Valdosta State University, Valdosta, GA

    The history of the Lake Louise Field Station, from its 1951 purchase by George Leiby to its acquisition in 2009 by Valdosta State University, provides an interesting and varied look into the stewardship critical to teaching and research and the role played by the station in the development of the fields of paleoecology, paleotempestology and ethnohistory. During this 58-year period several individuals played critical roles in the development of this 76.9 hectare field station as a natural area for teaching and research. Notable among them were George and Louise Leiby who, working with Leo Lorenzo and Clyde Connell, set aside the station as a natural area for teaching and research. From the 1960s to the present, WA Watts, H Grissino-Mayer, J Tepper, D Hyatt, and J Pascarella and others have conducted research that has provided critical insight into the history and ecology of the area extending to 47,000 BP

    Small Group Tutorial Curriculum During Third Year Surgical Clerkship and Identification of Surgical Role Models

    Identification of surgical mentors is associated with medical student interest in surgical careers. Small group learning has been a fundamental component of the surgical clerkship at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine for 14 years. The curriculum was standardized on 2018 and has long been hypothesized to facilitate mentoring relationships. In this brief report, we administered a survey that assessed the relationship between students and surgical faculty serving as small group tutors. Analysis was performed by descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis. The survey yielded an 18.8% response rate. Greater than 50% of students identified their tutor as a surgical role model. Greater than 60% of students affirmed that their tutor at least somewhat influenced their interest in surgery. Larger longitudinal studies with higher response rates are needed to assess relationships over time, and if these relationships ultimately correlate with applications made to surgical residency programs

    Occurrence of Salmonella and Listeria spp. on retail poultry products in South Italy and comparison of conventional and rapid methods for their detection

    Salmonella and Listeria spp. are frequently detected in poultry meats. Conventional isolation and identification methods to detect these microrganisms in food are laborious and time-consuming. In the present study the occurrence of Salmonellae and Listeriae on 362 samples of retail poultry in Caserta, South Italy was evaluated and standard microbiological and rapid methods were compared. Furthermore, the samples were collected and analyzed twice a week, on Monday and Friday to establish their possible variability from storage. Both methods showed a strong contamination of samples by Listeria spp. (about 50% for both methods) with 12% Listeria monocytogenes while the contamination of Salmonella was poorer (14-15%). The two procedures showed a good agreement for the detection of Listeriae while the sensitivity of the Rapid test for Salmonellae was poorer (75%). Data about sampling on Monday and Friday highlighted a significant increase in Listeria spp. at the end of the week

    Transformation and Ecotoxicity of Carbamic Pesticides in Water

    N-methylcarbamate insecticides are widely used chemicals for crop protection. This study examines the hydro- lytic and photolytic cleavage of benfuracarb, carbosulfan and carbofuran under natural conditions. Their toxicity and that of the corresponding main degradation products toward aquatic organisms were evaluated. Suspensions of benfuracarb, carbosulfan and carbo- furan in water were exposed to sunlight, with one set of dark controls, for 6 days, and analyzed by 1H-NMR and HPLC. Acute toxicity tests were performed on Brachionus calyciflorus, Daphnia magna, and Thamnocefalus platyurus. Chronic tests were performed on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, and Cerio- daphnia dubia. Under sunlight irradiation, benfuracarb and carbosulfan gave off carbofuran and carbofuran-phenol, while only carbofuran was detected in the dark experiments. The latter was degraded to phenol by exposure to sunlight. Ef- fects of pH, humic acid and KNO3 were evaluated by kinetics on dilute solutions in the dark and by UV irradiation, which evidenced the lability of the pesticide at pH 9. All three pesti- cides and phenol exhibited acute and higher chronic toxicity towards the aquatic organisms tested. Investigation on the hydrolysis and photolysis of benfuracarb and carbosulfan under natural conditions provides evidence concerning the selective decay to carbofuran and/or phenol. Carbofuran is found to be more persistent and toxic. The decay of benfuracarb and carbosulfan to carbofuran and the relative stability of this latter pesticide account for many papers that report the detection of carbofuran in water, fruits and vegetables

    A Novel Educational Tool to Improve Medical Student Knowledge Acquisition During Surgical Rotations

    Background: The addition of a novel education tool helps students improve understanding of general surgery topics. However, the effect of the new tool on objective exam performance is unknown. Materials: A 10-item card of high-yield general surgery topics was implemented in the third-year surgery clerkship. Students reviewed these topics with general surgery residents. Scores from the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) surgery subject exam and Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) board exam were compared among students who completed the Ask-a-Resident Topic card to a control group. Results: Students who participated in the curriculum demonstrated significantly better scores on the NBME Surgery exam, t (236) = −2.56, P =.006. There was not a significant effect of the curriculum on Step 2 CK scores, although students who participated in the curriculum (M = 250.7, SD = 13.4) achieved higher scores than the control group (M = 247.8, SD = 14.2). Discussion: The novel curriculum may improve objective student performance on standardized surgery exams

    Academic expectations profiles of spanish and portuguese higher education students

    Las expectativas académicas de los estudiantes son hoy reconocidas como una variable importante en la explicación de su adaptación y éxito académico. Esa importancia es mayor en los alumnos del primer año, ya que, frecuentemente presentan expectativas iniciales muy elevadas que no siempre llegan a concretarse. Con la pretensión de conocer cuáles son esas expectativas iniciales, el trabajo que se presenta analiza el perfil de las mismas en estudiantes de Enseñanza Superior (ES) de primer año. La muestra está compuesta por 719 estudiantes de diversas titulaciones académicas de las Universidades de Vigo-Campus de Ourense y Minho. A los participantes se les aplicó el Cuestionario de Percepciones Académicas (CPA). Los resultados han sido analizados tomando la nacionalidad y el ámbito de estudio (cientifico, juridico-social, tecnológico). Los resultados muestran que los estudiantes portugueses tienden a presentar expectativas más elevadas en general, traduciéndose en una valoración superior de su entrada en la Universidad. A su vez, considerando las siete dimensiones de expectativas evaluadas, se comprueba un perfil similar para ambos países en relación a las expectativas más o menos valoradas. Se destacan las expectativas de obtener una formación que permita acceder a un buen empleo o carrera, en primer lugar, y las expectativas de tener en la Universidad oportunidades de desarrollo personal y social, en segundo lugar, como las más valoradas por los estudiantes.Academic expectations are recognized as an important variable for students’ adjustment and academic success. This importance is higher for first year students, because they often present initial expectations that may not be met. Aiming at identifying these initial expectations, this study presents and analyses the profile of first year students' academic expectations. The sample included 719 students attending different undergraduate programs at University of Vigo - Campus of Ourense, and at University of Minho. Participants completed the Academic Perceptions Questionnaire (APQ). Analyses were based on students’ nationality and study domain (scientific, juridical-social, technological). Results show that Portuguese students present higher expectations, in general, which shows they attribute a higher value to their access to University. On the other hand, and regarding the seven dimensions of assessed expectations, we can see that this difference in average scores is not structural, because there is a similar pattern of higher and lower expectations, for both countries. The most valued expectations are, in first place, expectations of having an education that will lead to a good job or career, and in second place, expectations of having opportunities of personal and social development in University

    EEGManyPipelines: A Large-scale, Grassroots Multi-analyst Study of Electroencephalography Analysis Practices in the Wild

    The ongoing reproducibility crisis in psychology and cognitive neuroscience has sparked increasing calls to re-evaluate and reshape scientific culture and practices. Heeding those calls, we have recently launched the EEGManyPipelines project as a means to assess the robustness of EEG research in naturalistic conditions and experiment with an alternative model of conducting scientific research. One hundred sixty-eight analyst teams, encompassing 396 individual researchers from 37 countries, independently analyzed the same unpublished, representative EEG data set to test the same set of predefined hypotheses and then provided their analysis pipelines and reported outcomes. Here, we lay out how large-scale scientific projects can be set up in a grassroots, community-driven manner without a central organizing laboratory. We explain our recruitment strategy, our guidance for analysts, the eventual outputs of this project, and how it might have a lasting impact on the field
