    The r'-band luminosity function of Abell1367: a comparison with Coma

    We made a large (approximately 1degr x 1degr) r'-band imaging survey of the central regions of the two nearby clusters of galaxies, Abell1367 and Coma. The data, presented as a catalog, are used to construct the r'-band luminosity function (LF) of galaxies in these two clusters, by subtracting the Yasuda et al. (2001) galaxy counts from our cluster counts. Our Coma luminosity function is consistent with previous determinations, i.e. providing a faint end slope alpha = -1.47_-0.09^+0.08, significantly steeper than the one we find for Abell1367 (alpha = -1.07_-0.16^+0.20). The counts in Abell1367 show a relative minimum at r' ~ 19, followed by a steep increase faintward. The difference between the two clusters appears significant, given the consistency of the experimental conditions in the two clusters. Whereas for Coma we find a significant increase of the slope of the LF outwards, no such effect is found for Abell1367.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Ultraviolet dust attenuation in spiral galaxies: the role of age-dependent extinction and the initial mass function

    We analyse the attenuation properties of a sample of ultraviolet (UV) selected galaxies, with the use of the spectrophotometric model GRASIL. In particular, we focus on the relation between dust attenuation and the reddening in the UV spectral region. We show that a realistic modelling of geometrical distribution of dust and the different population of stars can explain the UV reddening of normal spiral galaxies also with a standard Milky Way dust. Our results clearly underline that it is fundamental to take into account that younger stars suffer a higher attenuation than older stars (the age-dependent extinction) because stars are born in more-than-average dusty environments. In this work, we also find that the concentration of young stars on the galactic plane of spirals has a relevant impact on the expected UV colours, impact that has not been explored before this paper. Finally, we discuss the role of the initial mass function (IMF) in shaping the relation between UV reddening and dust attenuation, and we show that a Kroupa IMF is more consistent with observed data than the classical Salpeter IMF

    The infrared emission of ultraviolet selected galaxies from z = 0 to z=1

    We select galaxies in UV rest-frame at z=0, z~0.7 and z~1 together with a sample of LBGs at z~1, the samples are built in order to sample the same range of luminosity at any redshift. The evolution of the IR and UV luminosities with z is analysed for individual galaxies as well as in terms of luminosity functions. The L_IR/L_UV ratio is used to measure dust attenuation. This ratio does not exhibit a strong evolution with z for the bulk of our sample galaxies but some trends are found for galaxies with a strong dust attenuation and for UV luminous sources: galaxies with L_IR/L_UV>10 are more frequent at z>0 than at z=0 and the largest values of L_IR/L_UV are found for UV faint objects; conversely the most luminous galaxies of our samples (L_UV> 2 10^{10} L_sun$), detected at z=1, exhibit a lower dust attenuation than the fainter ones. L_IR/L_UV increases with the K rest-frame luminosity of the galaxies at all the redshifts considered and shows a residual anti-correlation with L_UV. The most massive and UV luminous galaxies exhibit quite large specific star formation rates. LBGs exhibit systematically lower dust attenuation than UV selected galaxies of same luminosity but similar specific star formation rates. The analysis of the UV+IR luminosity functions leads to the conclusion that up to z = 1 most of the star formation activity of UV selected galaxies is emitted in IR. Whereas we are able to retrieve all the star formation from our UV selection at z=0.7, at z = 1 we miss a large fraction of galaxies more luminous than ~ 10^{11} L_sun.     Drugs use in pregnancy in the Valencia Region and the risk of congenital anomalies

    Background Despite the potential risks of drug use during pregnancy, consumption has increased in recent decades. Objective To identify the risk of congenital anomalies (CA) associated with the use of drugs in primary care in pregnant women resident in the Valencia Region. Methods A case-control study, considering a case as a less than one year old live birth in 2009–2010, diagnosed with a CA and resident in the Valencia Region, obtained from the CA population-based registry. Controls were selected from the Metabolic Disease Registry, and the drugs prescribed and dispensed from the Integral Management of Pharmaceutical Services. Crude odds ratio (OR) was calculated with its 95% confidence intervals and adjusted OR was calculated using logistic regression. Results A total of 1.913 cases and 3.826 controls were identified. The most frequently used drug groups were those acting on the musculoskeletal, nervous and respiratory systems, on the blood and blood forming organs, and anti-infection drugs. The most common drugs used were ibuprofen, dexketoprofen, paracetamol, amoxicillin, ferrous sulphate, and a combination of folic acid. A significantly increased risk of CA was identified for drugs acting on the musculoskeletal system (adjusted OR 1.14 [95% confidence interval 1.02–1.28]). A significantly decreased risk was observed for drugs acting on the blood and blood forming organs (adjusted OR 0.87 [95% confidence interval 0.78–0.98]). Conclusions Associations between drugs and CA in pregnant women resident in the Valencia Region have been identified for drugs that act as risk factors of CA, and for drugs that act as protective factors of CA. Antecedentes El consumo de medicamentos durante el embarazo se ha incrementado en las últimas décadas. Objetivo Identificar el riesgo de anomalías congénitas (AC) asociado a la utilización de medicamentos en atención ambulatoria en embarazadas residentes en la Comunitat Valenciana. Métodos Estudio de casos-controles, considerando caso a menores de un año nacidos vivos en 2009-2010 diagnosticados de AC y residentes en la Comunitat Valenciana, obtenidos del registro poblacional de AC. Los controles se seleccionaron del Registro de Metabolopatías y la medicación prescrita y dispensada se obtuvo del módulo Gestión Integral de Prestación Farmacéutica. Se calcularon las odds ratio (OR) y los intervalos de confianza al 95% y las OR ajustadas mediante regresión logística. Resultados Se identificaron 1.913 casos y 3.826 controles. Los grupos de medicamentos más frecuentemente prescritos y dispensados fueron: los que actúan sobre los sistemas musculoesquelético, nervioso, respiratorio, sobre la sangre y órganos hematopoyéticos, y antiinfecciosos. Los medicamentos más habituales fueron: ibuprofeno, dexketoprofeno, paracetamol, amoxicilina, sulfato de hierro y una combinación de ácido fólico. Se identificó un aumento del riesgo de anomalías congénitas significativo para los fármacos de acción sobre el sistema musculoesquelético (OR ajustada de 1,14 [intervalo de confianza al 95% 1,02-1,28]). Se observó una disminución del riesgo significativa en el grupo que actúa sobre la sangre y los órganos hematopoyéticos (OR ajustada de 0,87 [intervalo de confianza al 95% 0,78-0,98]). Conclusiones Se han identificado asociaciones de medicamentos con AC en mujeres embarazadas residentes en la Comunitat Valenciana, tanto para fármacos que actúan como factores de riesgo de AC como para fármacos que actúan como factores protectores de AC

    The Luminosity Function of Galaxies in the Hercules Cluster

    We have imaged \sim 1 deg2^{2} in the V-band in the direction of the Hercules Cluster (Abell 2151). The data are used to compute for the first time the luminosity function (LF) of galaxies in the cluster down to the dwarf regime (Mlim_{lim} \sim -13.85). The global LF is well described by a Schechter function (\cite{schechter76}) with best-fit parameters α\alpha = -1.30 ±\pm 0.06 and MV_V^* = -21.25 ±\pm 0.25. The radial dependence of the LF has also been studied, finding that it turns out to be almost constant within the errors even further away than the virial radius. Given the presence of significant substructure within the cluster, we have analized the LFs in different regions. While two of the subclusters present LFs consistent with each other and with the global one, the southernmost one exhibits a somewhat steeper faint-end slope.Comment: 3 pages, to appear in Proc. of IAU Colloq. 195: "Outskirts of Galaxy Clusters: Intense Life in the Suburbs

    The V-band luminosity function of galaxies in A2151

    We present a wide field VV-band imaging survey of approximately 1 deg2^2 (7.2h752\sim7.2 h^{-2}_{75} Mpc2^{2}) in the direction of the nearby cluster of galaxies Abell 2151 (the Hercules Cluster). The data are used to construct the luminosity function (LF) down to MV14.85M_V \approx -14.85, thus allowing us to study the dwarf galaxy population in A2151 for the first time. The obtained global LF is well described by a Schechter function with best-fit parameters α=1.290.08+0.09\alpha = -1.29^{+0.09}_{-0.08} and MV=21.410.41+0.44M_V^* = -21.41^{+0.44}_{-0.41}. The radial dependence of the LF was investigated, with the faint-end slope tending to be slightly steeper in the outermost regions and farther away than the virial radius. Given the presence of significant substructure within the cluster, we also analysed the LFs in three different regions. We find that the dwarf to giant ratio increases from the northern to the southern subcluster, and from low to high local density environments, although these variations are marginally significant (less than 2σ\sigma).Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
