    A global Carleman estimate in a transmission wave equation and application to a one-measurement inverse problem

    We consider a transmission wave equation in two embedded domains in R2R^2, where the speed is a1>0a1 > 0 in the inner domain and a2>0a2 > 0 in the outer domain. We prove a global Carleman inequality for this problem under the hypothesis that the inner domain is strictly convex and a1>a2a1 > a2 . As a consequence of this inequality, uniqueness and Lip- schitz stability are obtained for the inverse problem of retrieving a stationary potential for the wave equation with Dirichlet data and discontinuous principal coefficient from a single time-dependent Neumann boundary measurement

    Satellite-Measured Chlorophyll and Temperature Variability Off Northern Chile During the 1996-1998 La Niña and El Niño

    Time series of satellite measurements are used to describe patterns of surface temperature and chlorophyll associated with the 1996 cold La Nina phase and the 1997-1998 warm El Nino phase of the El Nino - Southern Oscillation cycle in the upwelling region off northern Chile. Surface temperature data are available through the entire study period. Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) data first became available in September 1997 during a relaxation in El Nino conditions identified by in situ hydrographic data. Over the time period of coincident satellite data, chlorophyll patterns closely track surface temperature patterns. Increases both in nearshore chlorophyll concentration and in cross-shelf extension of elevated concentrations are associated with decreased coastal temperatures during both the relaxation in El Nino conditions in September-November 1997 and the recovery from EI Nino conditions after March 1998. Between these two periods during austral summer (December 1997 to March 1998) and maximum El Nino temperature anomalies, temperature patterns normally associated with upwelling were absent and chlorophyll concentrations were minimal. Cross-shelf chlorophyll distributions appear to be modulated by surface temperature frontal zones and are positively correlated with a satellite-derived upwelling index. Frontal zone patterns and the upwelling index in 1996 imply an austral summer nearshore chlorophyll maximum, consistent with SeaWiFS data from I 1998-1999, after the El Nino. SeaWiFS retrievals in the data set used here are higher than in situ measurements by a factor of 2-4; however, consistency in the offset suggests relative patterns are valid

    Nonlinear Neumann boundary stabilization of the wave equation using rotated multipliers

    The rotated multipliers method is performed in the case of the boundary stabilization by means of a(linear or non-linear) Neumann feedback. this method leads to new geometrical cases concerning the "active" part of the boundary where the feedback is apllied. Due to mixed boundary conditions, these cases generate singularities. Under a simple geometrical conditon concerning the orientation of boundary, we obtain a stabilization result in both cases.Comment: 17 pages, 9 figure

    Effect of pH in the survival of Lactobacillus salivarius strain UCO_979C wild type and the pH acid acclimated variant

    Background: Bacterial acclimation involves cellular changes permitting the survival of a microorganism to prolonged acid pH exposure. The general aim of this work is to support this idea by determining the effect of pH in the survival of the human gastric derived probiotic strain Lactobacillus salivarius UCO_979C-1 (wild type) and L. salivarius UCO_979C-2 (acclimation to pH 2.6), which possesses anti- Helicobacter pylori properties. Results: To assess this aim, the exopolysaccharide production through the phenol-sulfuric acid method was evaluated. Moreover, morphological and structural changes by transmission and scanning electron microscopy were observed. The bacterial survival was measured by viable count. The results showed that the acclimated variant strain synthesized higher levels of exopolysaccharide (690 \ub1 0.03 mg/L) more than the wild type (450 \ub1 0.12 mg/L). In addition, the acclimated variant preserved the viable count at pH 2.6 for 48 h, whereas the wild type strain decreases after 6 h and was non-viable at 24 h. Conclusion: The results suggest that the acid stress acclimation of the strain L. salivarius UCO_979C-1 modified some cellular properties making this strain potentially useful as a gastric probiotic

    El factor clima en la floración del desierto en los años “El Niño” 1991 y 1997

    The objective of this article is to describe and analyse the precipitation and temperature conditions during the years 1991 and 1997, when the desert bloomed in an extraordinary way. This team perceived a great difference in the physiognomy of the landscape in relation to the germination and blooming of the vegetation between those years in Norte Chico. In 1997 in Alto Patache, South of Iquique in Tarapacá, there was an exceptional germination of the coastal desert. It is probable that the meteorological conditions may be one of the factors of this differences. The most important results are the differences in amount of precipitation and thermal behaviour in Norte Chico, where the year that showed more rain and more warm temperature was the one that bloomed less.El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo describir y analizar las condiciones de precipitaciones y de temperatura que hubo durante los llamados “desierto florido” de los años 1991 y 1997. Este equipo percibió una fuerte diferenciación en la fisonomía del paisaje en relación a la germinación y floración de la vegetación entre ambos años en el Norte Chico. En 1997, en Alto Patache, al sur de Iquique, en Tarapacá, hubo una floración excepcional en el desierto costero. Es probable que los parámetros meteorológicos hayan sido uno de los factores decisivos en dicha diferenciación. Los resultados más importantes para el Norte Chico, se refieren a las grandes diferencias en los montos e intensidad de precipitación y de comportamiento térmico entre ambos años; siendo el de mayor cantidad de agua caída y de mayor temperatura, el que dio una menor respuesta vegetacional

    In situ estrogen metabolism in proliferative endometria from untreated women with polycystic ovarian syndrome with and without endometrial hyperplasia

    The aim of the present investigation was to study whether the endocrinological status of women bearing polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) affects the endometrial in situ steroid metabolism. For this purpose, we evaluated the mRNA levels (RT-PCR), and the activity of steroid metabolic enzymes: P450 aromatase, steroid sulfatase (STS), estrogen sulfotransferase (EST) and 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17 beta-HSD) in 23 samples of normal endometria (CE), 18 PCOS endometria without treatment (PCOSE), 10 specimens from PCOS women with endometrial hyperplasia (HPCOSE), and 7 endometria from patients with endometrial hyperplasia not associated to PCOS (EH). The data showed lower levels of STS mRNA for PCOSE and HPCOSE (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, respectively) and of EST for HPCOSE and EH compared to control (p < 0.05). However, higher levels for EST mRNA were obtained in PCOSE (p < 0.05) versus CE. The mRNA and protein levels for P450 aromatase were undetectable in all analyzed endometria. The relationship between the activities of STS and EST was lower in PCOSE and HPCOSE (p < 0.05) versus CE. The ratio betweeen the mRNA from 17 beta-HSD type 1/type 2 was higher in PCOSE (p < 0.05), whereas, a diminution in the 17 beta-HSD type 2 activity was observed in PCOSE (p < 0.05). These results indicate that the activity of enzymes related to the steroid metabolism in analyzed PCOSE differ from those found in the CE. Consequently, PCOSE may present an in situ deregulation of the steroid metabolism

Frontiers in Earth Science, 10, (2022): 897267, https://doi.org/10.3389/feart.2022.897267.Subduction zones represent the interface between Earth’s interior (crust and mantle) and exterior (atmosphere and oceans), where carbon and other volatile elements are actively cycled between Earth reservoirs by plate tectonics. Helium is a sensitive tracer of volatile sources and can be used to deconvolute mantle and crustal sources in arcs; however it is not thought to be recycled into the mantle by subduction processes. In contrast, carbon is readily recycled, mostly in the form of carbon-rich sediments, and can thus be used to understand volatile delivery via subduction. Further, carbon is chemically-reactive and isotope fractionation can be used to determine the main processes controlling volatile movements within arc systems. Here, we report helium isotope and abundance data for 42 deeply-sourced fluid and gas samples from the Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ) and Southern Volcanic Zone (SVZ) of the Andean Convergent Margin (ACM). Data are used to assess the influence of subduction parameters (e.g., crustal thickness, subduction inputs, and convergence rate) on the composition of volatiles in surface volcanic fluid and gas emissions. He isotopes from the CVZ backarc range from 0.1 to 2.6 RA (n = 23), with the highest values in the Puna and the lowest in the Sub-Andean foreland fold-and-thrust belt. Atmosphere-corrected He isotopes from the SVZ range from 0.7 to 5.0 RA (n = 19). Taken together, these data reveal a clear southeastward increase in 3He/4He, with the highest values (in the SVZ) falling below the nominal range associated with pure upper mantle helium (8 ± 1 RA), approaching the mean He isotope value for arc gases of (5.4 ± 1.9 RA). Notably, the lowest values are found in the CVZ, suggesting more significant crustal inputs (i.e., assimilation of 4He) to the helium budget. The crustal thickness in the CVZ (up to 70 km) is significantly larger than in the SVZ, where it is just ∼40 km. We suggest that crustal thickness exerts a primary control on the extent of fluid-crust interaction, as helium and other volatiles rise through the upper plate in the ACM. We also report carbon isotopes from (n = 11) sites in the CVZ, where δ13C varies between −15.3‰ and −1.2‰ [vs. Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite (VPDB)] and CO2/3He values that vary by over two orders of magnitude (6.9 × 108–1.7 × 1011). In the SVZ, carbon isotope ratios are also reported from (n = 13) sites and vary between −17.2‰ and −4.1‰. CO2/3He values vary by over four orders of magnitude (4.7 × 107–1.7 × 1012). Low δ13C and CO2/3He values are consistent with CO2 removal (e.g., calcite precipitation and gas dissolution) in shallow hydrothermal systems. Carbon isotope fractionation modeling suggests that calcite precipitation occurs at temperatures coincident with the upper temperature limit for life (122°C), suggesting that biology may play a role in C-He systematics of arc-related volcanic fluid and gas emissions.This work was principally supported by the NSF-FRES award 2121637 to PB, KL, and JM.     Voiding Dysfunction: Another Etiology of Vulvovaginitis in Young Girls

    Objective: To determine the prevalence of voiding dysfunction (VD) in patients with persistent vulvovaginitis (PVV), and to evaluate the clinical response of PVV in the treatment of VD. Patients and Methods: Girls four years or older who consulted for PVV for at least one month and who did not respond to general measures. A physical examination was performed with visual inspection and colposcopy; vaginal samples for culture and vaginoscopy were carried out. On every patient urodynamic studies were performed. Girls who were diagnosed with VD were treated. A pediatric gynecologist did the follow-up; a successful response was considered when inflammatory symptoms and vaginal discharge ceased. Results: Twenty patients were included, mean age 8.6 years (range: 4.6-14 years); 75% prepubertal symptoms lasted for 1.8 years; 19 (95%) had urodynamia, 10 (52.6%) had an overactive bladder, 8 (42.1%) external bladder sphincter dyssynergia, 1 (5.2%) hypotonic bladder, and 13 (65%) showed improvemen
