Millennial college students’ leadership development is imperative for the future success of US society. If utilized consciously, the university can serve as a container of self-cultivation for the aspiring Millennial leader. Keys to leadership development are combining theory, practice, and mentoring. By utilizing the work of Joseph Campbell combined with other cutting-edge leadership development theories, this autoethnographic research shows the synthesis of theory and practice for a successful Millennial leader. This research is offered as a service to future Millennial college students and potential leaders

Ethical considerations for involving Latina adolescents in mental health research

Get PDF
TOPIC: US Latina adolescents experience significant mental health disparities, such as depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation and, therefore, should be involved in research studies focused on minimizing these health disparities. However, researchers must consider the specific ways this population is vulnerable and provide adequate protections to reduce risks related to these vulnerabilities. PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to describe the different ways that Latina adolescents with mental health problems can be vulnerable research participants, identify strategies to protect this population during a research study, and describe steps taken to apply these strategies in an ongoing qualitative study examining depression in Latina adolescents. SOURCES USED: Kipnis's (2003) article describes seven ways that children can be vulnerable research participants. These seven vulnerabilities are used to describe the vulnerabilities of Latina adolescents with mental health problems. Specific strategies to protect this population are synthesized to provide a list of strategies that can be used by researchers to reduce the risks associated with the vulnerabilities of this group. CONCLUSIONS: In order to minimize risks for Latina adolescents, researchers must be engaged in Latino/a communities, use culturally and linguisticall

The results of spectral measurements for mafic silicates are given. The study provided valuable spectral reflectance information about mafic silicates and phyllosilicates in the 2.5 to 4.6 micron wavelength region. It was shown that the reflectance of these materials is strongly affected by the presence of H2O and OH. Therefore, the identification of these absorbing species is greatly enhanced

Interference filter photometry of periodic comet Ashbrook-Jackson

Get PDF
P/Ashbrook-Jackson has a period of 7.43 years and comes to perihelion at 2.284 AU. It is a low inclination object (12.5 deg) of moderate eccentricity (0.400). In 1963, it made the best possible apparition, coming to perihelion and opposition virtually simultaneously, but no one made physical observations of faint periodic comets in 1963. In 1978 Ashbrook-Jackson came to opposition on Sept. 28, just 40 days after perihelion. It will be just over 100 years before an equally favorable apparition recurs. P/Ashbrook-Jackson was recovered by Pereyra at Cordoba Observatory on April 28, 1977, more than a year and a quarter before perilhelion and already showing a diffuse coma with central condensation. Its helio-centric distance was then 3.7 AU. An extensive program was planned, but equipment problems and weather ultimately limited it to the two nights of data reported here

Approach to Teaching Research Methodology for Information Technology

Get PDF
The paper reports on an approach to teaching a course in information technology research methodology in a doctoral program, the Doctor of Management in Information Technology (DMIT), in which research, with focus on finding innovative solutions to problems found in practice, comprises a significant part of the degree. The approach makes a contribution by preparing doctoral students, who are experienced professionals studying part-time, for dissertation research. The rationale of the DMIT and the educational objectives of the course are presented. A research process model applicable to applied research in information technology (IT) is proposed and discussed. This model accommodates scientific methods of research, including empirical, quantitative, qualitative, case study and mixed methods. The course design and pedagogical approach are described in terms of thematic areas of scholarship and practice, and intended outcomes. The paper summarizes the topics of the syllabus, including proposal formulation; research design; methods of investigation; methods of demonstrating concept; approaches to research validation; and documenting research results in the form of technical papers and the dissertation. The purpose of the paper is to share the approach followed in teaching the course, the course design, a summary of lessons learned after several offerings of the course, and ideas for further improvement

Rapid Acute Coronary Syndrome Evaluation Over One Hour With High-Sensitivity Cardiac Troponin I:A United States-Based Stepped-Wedge, Randomized Trial

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The real-world effectiveness and safety of a 0/1-hour accelerated protocol using high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) to exclude myocardial infarction (MI) compared to routine care in the United States is uncertain. The objective was to compare a 0/1-hour accelerated protocol for evaluation of MI to a 0/3-hour standard care protocol.METHODS: The RACE-IT trial was a stepped-wedge, randomized trial across 9 emergency departments (EDs) that enrolled 32,609 patients evaluated for possible MI from July 2020 through April 2021. Patients undergoing high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I testing with concentrations less than or equal to 99th percentile were included. Patients who had MI excluded by the 0/1-hour protocol could be discharged from the ED. Patients in the standard care protocol had 0- and 3-hour troponin testing and application of a modified HEART score to be eligible for discharge. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients discharged from the ED without 30-day death or MI.RESULTS: There were 13,505 and 19,104 patients evaluated in the standard care and accelerated protocol groups, respectively, of whom 19,152 (58.7%) were discharged directly from the ED. There was no significant difference in safe discharges between standard care and the accelerated protocol (59.5% vs 57.8%; adjusted odds ratio (aOR)=1.05, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.95 to 1.16). At 30 days, there were 90 deaths or MIs with 38 (0.4%) in the standard care group and 52 (0.4%) in the accelerated protocol group (aOR=0.84, 95% CI 0.43 to 1.68).CONCLUSION: A 0/1-hour accelerated protocol using high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I did not lead to more safe ED discharges compared with standard care.</p

A feasibility test of an online intervention to prevention dating violence in emerging adults

Get PDF
Dating violence in emerging adults is a significant problem and few prevention programs based on the developmental needs of this age group have been developed. Our research team developed an online dating violence prevention program called WISER (Writing to Improve Self-in-Relationships) for emerging adults. The program is based on narrative therapy principles and uses structured writing techniques. A single group pre-post feasibility test of WISER was conducted with 14 college women. WISER was demonstrated to be feasible and acceptable and to show promise as an effective program to decrease dating violence in this population

Fiduciary Or Force In The 21st Century?

The rise of China over the past three decades is more than astonishing. Some have considered it to be nothing short of an economic miracle. China has transformed itself from a rural backward economy in 1978 to a thoroughly modern-looking economy and society today. While it took the United States almost 50 years (from 1839-86) to double its per capita GDP, China has done it twice in less than twenty years –from 1978-87 and again from 1987-96. The Chinese economy has improved at such a dramatic rate that many commentators have presumed China’s imminent global economic dominance in the 21st century. Many now consider geopolitics a bi-polar affair, where only America and China matter. In 2008, for the first time, serious cracks are beginning to surface in the foundations of China’s economy, prompting a reconsideration of whether China’s future success is as guaranteed and inevitable as first thought. China is facing its most difficult year in this new century. With millions of unemployed workers and a slowing economic growth, China is facing tens of thousands of protests each year. Since the legitimacy of the Chinese government is based on its economic success, China’s continued success in the 21st century will depend on whether the Communist Party is able to maintain trust in its economy, political system and society. China’s economic sustainability rests on whether it can cope successfully with its new- found economic power. The question that has yet to be decided is whether China will adopt a type of fiduciary culture like the ones prevalent in common law countries, such as the U.S. and Britain and its former colony Hong Kong, or will China resort to the use of force to maintain its political and economic power

Swimming Efficiency of Bacterium Escherichia Coli

We use in vivo measurements of swimming bacteria in an optical trap to determine fundamental properties of bacterial propulsion. In particular, we determine the propulsion matrix, which relates the angular velocity of the flagellum to the torques and forces propelling the bacterium. From the propulsion matrix dynamical properties such as forces, torques, swimming speed and power can be obtained from measurements of the angular velocity of the motor. We find significant heterogeneities among different individuals even though all bacteria started from a single colony. The propulsive efficiency, defined as the ratio of the propulsive power output to the rotary power input provided by the motors, is found to be 0.2%.Comment: 6 page
