Development of coronary stents using advanced results of materials science and technology
Stents are high tech endovascular implants. K&M Inc. is the single Eastern European stent
producer company. The market needs more biocompatible devices as the trend of the stent
development all the producers have to react. The other members of a R&D consortium is
research institutions deals with diamond-like and drug-eluting coatings for decade. These
biocompatible coatings can avoid the metallic stent surface to directly contact to the living
tissues. This way a biologically active drug connected to the surface can be delivered directly
to the diseased vessel wall. The Cardiovascular Institution has the clinical facility to test the
new products. This group of applicants is obliged to develop, test and put on the market the
new generation biocompatible coated stents
Satellite orbit predictor
An analog aid to determine satellite coverage of Emergency Locator Transmitters Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (ELT/EPIRB) distress incidence is discussed. The satellite orbit predictor is a graphical aid for determining the relationship between the satellite orbit, antenna coverage of the spacecraft and coverage of the Local User Terminal. The predictor allows the user to quickly visualize if a selected position will probably be detected and is composed of a base map and a satellite track overlay for each satellite.A table of equator crossings for each satellite is included
COSPAS-SARSAT Satellite Orbit Predictor, Vol 4
The satellite orbit predictor is a graphical aid for determining the relationship between the satellite (SARSAT or COSPAS) orbit, antenna coverage of the spacecraft and coverage of the LUTs. The predictor allows the user to quickly visualize if a selected position will probably be detected and is composed of a base map and a satellite track overlay for each satellite. Additionally, a table of equator crossings for each satellite is included
The three-dimensional carrier-envelope-phase map of focused few-cycle pulsed Gaussian beams
We derive an analytical expression that describes the complete
three-dimensional carrier-envelope phase (CEP) distribution of in the focal
volume of ultrashort pulsed Gaussian beams focused by spherical mirrors or
lenses. The focal CEP map depends on the so-called factor specifying the
frequency-dependence of the beam width of the source few-cycle pulse, on its
chirp and on the small chromatic aberration introduced by a lens without
appreciably distorting or broadening the few-cycle pulse. We show how to tailor
the CEP map of mirror-focused and lens-focused few-cycle pulses in order to
produce negligible transversal and axial CEP variations in specific regions of
the focal volume for phase-sensitive interactions of light with matter taking
place in a volume or on a surface. We propose a quasi-achromatic doublet lens
that can implement in practice these tailored CEP distributions.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
The Electrostatic Ion Beam Trap : a mass spectrometer of infinite mass range
We study the ions dynamics inside an Electrostatic Ion Beam Trap (EIBT) and
show that the stability of the trapping is ruled by a Hill's equation. This
unexpectedly demonstrates that an EIBT, in the reference frame of the ions
works very similar to a quadrupole trap. The parallelism between these two
kinds of traps is illustrated by comparing experimental and theoretical
stability diagrams of the EIBT. The main difference with quadrupole traps is
that the stability depends only on the ratio of the acceleration and trapping
electrostatic potentials, not on the mass nor the charge of the ions. All kinds
of ions can be trapped simultaneously and since parametric resonances are
proportional to the square root of the charge/mass ratio the EIBT can be used
as a mass spectrometer of infinite mass range
Mechanical and Chemical Control of Smooth Cordgrass in Waillapa Bay, Washington
We evaluated four methods to control smooth cordgrass
(Spartina alterniflora Loisel), hereafter spartina, in Willapa
Bay, Washington: mowing, mowing plus herbicide combination,
herbicide only for clones, and aerial application of herbicide
for meadows. (PDF has 7 pages.
Racial discrimination, ethnic-racial socialization, depression, and educational attainment in a longitudinal study of African American youth
Despite some politicized claims that racial discrimination no longer exists (Neville, Gallardo, & Sue, 2016), there is strong evidence that racial minorities still experience significant discrimination in the United States (Belgrave & Allison, 2014). As a result, empirical research of racial discrimination is still warranted. Meta-analyses show that perceived racial discrimination has a strong effect on psychological well-being, such as depressive symptoms and self-esteem (Lee & Ahn, 2011; Paradies et al., 2015). There is also empirical support that racial discrimination is linked with academic outcomes (e.g., academic motivations and achievement; Benner, Wang, Shen, Boyle, Polk, & Cheng, 2018). Although racial discrimination is a risk factor for poorer psychological well-being and reduced academic function, ethnic-racial socialization (ERS) may buffer these effects (Brown and Tylka 2011). In addition, recent research suggests that studying the effects of the combination of various types of ERS messages (meta-messages) buffers the negative impacts on psychological well-being and academic achievement (Granberg, Edmond, Simons, Gibbons, & Lei, 2012; Neblett, Chavous, Nguyên, & Sellers, 2009). Therefore, this study explored the: a) relationship of perceived racial discrimination to academics and psychological well-being and b) buffering effects of ERS meta-messages on mitigating the impact of racial discrimination in a longitudinal sample of African American young adults. Results of the present study indicated mixed results about the buffering effects of ERS meta-messages on the relationship between perceived racial discrimination and the outcome variables of interest. Additional analyses showed some significant buffering effects of ERS scales on the relationship between discrimination and educational attainment. The present study suggests that ERS may be beneficial in protecting African American youth from the deleterious effects of racial discrimination. However, further research is needed to determine the specific impacts of ERS meta-messages compared to ERS discrete messages as a buffer against perceived racial discrimination
