The Extinction and Distance of Maffei 1
We have obtained low- and high-resolution spectra of the core of the
highly-reddened elliptical galaxy Maffei 1. From these data, we have obtained
the first measurement of the Mg2 index, and have measured the velocity
dispersion and radial velocity with improved accuracy. To evaluate the
extinction, a correlation between the Mg2 index and effective V-I colour has
been established for elliptical galaxies. Using a new method for correcting for
effective wavelength shifts, we find A_V = 4.67 +/- 0.19 mag, which is lower by
0.4 mag than previously thought. To establish the distance, the Fundamental
Plane for elliptical galaxies has been constructed in I. The velocity
dispersion of Maffei 1, measured to be 186.8 +/- 7.4 km/s, in combination with
modern wide-field photometry in I, leads to a distance of 2.92 +/- 0.37 Mpc.
The Dn-sigma relation, which is independently calibrated, gives 3.08 +/- 0.85
Mpc and 3.23 +/- 0.67 Mpc from photometry in B and K`, respectively. The
weighted mean of the three estimates is 3.01 +/- 0.30 Mpc. The distance and
luminosity make Maffei 1 the nearest giant elliptical galaxy. The radial
velocity of Maffei 1 is +66.4 +/- 5.0 km/s, significantly higher than the
accepted value of -10 km/s. The Hubble distance corresponding to the mean
velocity of Maffei 1, Maffei 2 and IC342 is 3.5 Mpc. Thus, it is unlikely that
Maffei 1 has had any influence on Local Group dynamics

Selecting stimuli parameters for video quality studies based on perceptual similarity distances
This work presents a methodology to optimize the selection of multiple parameter levels of an image acquisition, degradation, or post-processing process applied to stimuli intended to be used in a subjective image or video quality assessment (QA) study. It is known that processing parameters (e.g. compression bit-rate) or technical quality measures (e.g. peak signal-to-noise ratio, PSNR) are often non-linearly related to human quality judgment, and the model of either relationship may not be known in advance. Using these approaches to select parameter levels may lead to an inaccurate estimate of the relationship between the parameter and subjective quality judgments – the system’s quality model. To overcome this, we propose a method for modeling the relationship between parameter levels and perceived quality distances using a paired comparison parameter selection procedure in which subjects judge the perceived similarity in quality. Our goal is to enable the selection of evenly sampled parameter levels within the considered quality range for use in a subjective QA study. This approach is tested on two applications: (1) selection of compression levels for laparoscopic surgery video QA study, and (2) selection of dose levels for an interventional X-ray QA study. Subjective scores, obtained from the follow-up single stimulus QA experiments conducted with expert subjects who evaluated the selected bit-rates and dose levels, were roughly equidistant in the perceptual quality space - as intended. These results suggest that a similarity judgment task can help select parameter values corresponding to desired subjective quality levels

Distribution of transmitted charge through a double-barrier junction
The distribution function of transmitted charge through a double-barrier
junction is studied at zero temperature and at small applied voltage. Both a
semiclassical model, in which the transport is described by jump rates, and a
quantum mechanical model, which averages over resonant and non-resonant states,
are used to determine the characteristic function of the transmitted electrons.
It is demonstrated that for large times the logarithm of the characteristic
function is equal within the two approaches. The charge distribution is in
between a Gaussian and a Poissonian distribution if both barriers have equal
height and reduces to a Poissonian if one barrier is much higher than the

Sizing optimization of trapezoidal corrugated roof sheeting, supporting solar panels, under wind loading
The dimensions of trapezoidal roof sheeting supporting solar panels are optimized so that a minimum amount of steel is required for a specific range of wind loads. Sheets of different grades and different thicknesses along with different ranges of wind speeds are considered. In order to simulate the behavior of the corrugated sheets analysis is carried out for two limit states: strength and serviceability. For both limit states, the objective is to minimize the weight per unit area of the panels. First, optimum cross-section is obtained to meet the strength conditions. Then the deflection is controlled for serviceability. The optimum dimensions for each steel grade and loading condition are determined. The optimization problem is formulated as a multi-objective problem that aims to minimize the section\u27s weight and maximize the section elastic modulus under the wind loading condition. A graph theory based approach is presented for the sizing optimization, employing an applied graph theory approach for the multi-objective all pairs shortest path problem. The proposed methodology addresses the sizing optimization problem to determine the geometry of the thin-walled cold-formed steel cross-sections that satisfy the design topological constraints
A prospective, multicentre, observational cohort study of analgesia and outcome after pneumonectomy
Background Meta-analysis and systematic reviews of epidural compared with paravertebral blockade analgesia techniques for thoracotomy conclude that although the analgesia is comparable, paravertebral blockade has a better short-term side-effect profile. However, reduction in major complications including mortality has not been proven.
Methods The UK pneumonectomy study was a prospective observational cohort study in which all UK thoracic surgical centres were invited to participate. Data presented here relate to the mode of analgesia and outcome. Data were analysed for 312 patients having pneumonectomy at 24 UK thoracic surgical centres in 2005. The primary endpoint was a major complication.
Results The most common type of analgesia used was epidural (61.1%) followed by paravertebral infusion (31%). Epidural catheter use was associated with major complications (odds ratio 2.2, 95% confidence interval 1.1–3.8; P=0.02) by stepwise logistic regression analysis.
Conclusions An increased incidence of clinically important major post-pneumonectomy complications was associated with thoracic epidural compared with paravertebral blockade analgesia. However, this study is unable to provide robust evidence to change clinical practice for a better clinical outcome. A large multicentre randomized controlled trial is now needed to compare the efficacy, complications, and cost-effectiveness of epidural and paravertebral blockade analgesia after major lung resection with the primary outcome of clinically important major morbidity

Here, we report the 10,807-nucleotide-long consensus RNA genome sequences of three spatiotemporally distinct and genetically divergent Zika virus strains, with the functionality of their genomic sequences substantiated by reverse genetics: MR-766 (African lineage, Uganda, 1947), P6-740 (Asian lineage, Malaysia, 1966), and PRVABC-59 (Asian lineage-derived American strain, Puerto Rico, 2015)
Observation of Collective Excitations of the Dilute 2D Electron System
We report inelastic light scattering measurements of dispersive spin and
charge density excitations in dilute 2D electron systems reaching densities
less than 10^{10} cm^{-2}. In the quantum Hall state at nu=2, roton critical
points in the spin inter--Landau level mode show a pronounced softening as r_s
is increased. Instead of a soft mode instability predicted by Hartree--Fock
calculations for r_s ~ 3.3, we find evidence of multiple rotons in the
dispersion of the softening spin excitations. Extrapolation of the data
indicates the possibility of an instability for r_s >~ 11.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letter
