    Multisensor Processing Algorithms for Underwater Dipole Localization and Tracking Using MEMS Artificial Lateral-Line Sensors

    An engineered artificial lateral-line system has been recently developed, consisting of a 16-element array of finely spaced MEMS hot-wire flow sensors. This represents a new class of underwater flow sensing instruments and necessitates the development of rapid, efficient, and robust signal processing algorithms. In this paper, we report on the development and implementation of a set of algorithms that assist in the localization and tracking of vibrational dipole sources underwater. Using these algorithms, accurate tracking of the trajectory of a moving dipole source has been demonstrated successfully

    Population dynamics of rhesus macaques and associated foamy virus in Bangladesh.

    Foamy viruses are complex retroviruses that have been shown to be transmitted from nonhuman primates to humans. In Bangladesh, infection with simian foamy virus (SFV) is ubiquitous among rhesus macaques, which come into contact with humans in diverse locations and contexts throughout the country. We analyzed microsatellite DNA from 126 macaques at six sites in Bangladesh in order to characterize geographic patterns of macaque population structure. We also included in this study 38 macaques owned by nomadic people who train them to perform for audiences. PCR was used to analyze a portion of the proviral gag gene from all SFV-positive macaques, and multiple clones were sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis was used to infer long-term patterns of viral transmission. Analyses of SFV gag gene sequences indicated that macaque populations from different areas harbor genetically distinct strains of SFV, suggesting that geographic features such as forest cover play a role in determining the dispersal of macaques and SFV. We also found evidence suggesting that humans traveling the region with performing macaques likely play a role in the translocation of macaques and SFV. Our studies found that individual animals can harbor more than one strain of SFV and that presence of more than one SFV strain is more common among older animals. Some macaques are infected with SFV that appears to be recombinant. These findings paint a more detailed picture of how geographic and sociocultural factors influence the spectrum of simian-borne retroviruses

    Inter-areal coordination of columnar architectures during visual cortical development

    The occurrence of a critical period of plasticity in the visual cortex has long been established, yet its function in normal development is not fully understood. Here we show that as the late phase of the critical period unfolds, different areas of cat visual cortex develop in a coordinated manner. Orientation columns in areas V1 and V2 become matched in size in regions that are mutually connected. The same age trend is found for such regions in the left and right brain hemisphere. Our results indicate that a function of critical period plasticity is to progressively coordinate the functional architectures of different cortical areas - even across hemispheres.Comment: 30 pages, 1 table, 6 figure

    Diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for the ground states of atoms and ions in neutron star magnetic fields

    The diffusion quantum Monte Carlo method is extended to solve the old theoretical physics problem of many-electron atoms and ions in intense magnetic fields. The feature of our approach is the use of adiabatic approximation wave functions augmented by a Jastrow factor as guiding functions to initialize the quantum Monte Carlo prodecure. Dephasing is included as exponential decay of the off diagonal elements of the system's density matrix.     A Pathfinder Instrument for Precision Radial Velocities in the Near-Infrared

    We have designed and tested an in-plane echelle spectrograph configured to investigate precision radial velocities from ground-based near-infrared observations. The spectrograph operates across the spectral range of 0.9-1.7 mm at a spectral resolution of R = 50,000, and uses a liquid nitrogen-cooled HAWAII 1K detector. Repeated measurements of the Earth's rotation via integrated Sunlight with two different instrument arrangements in the near infrared Y band have produced radial velocities with ~10 m/s RMS over a period of several hours. The most recent instrument configuration has achieved an unbinned RMS of 7 m/s and suggests that infrared radial velocity precisions may be able to approach those achieved at optical wavelengths.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

    Estimating Fire Background Temperature at a Geostationary Scale-An Evaluation of Contextual Methods for AHI-8

    An integral part of any remotely sensed fire detection and attribution method is an estimation of the target pixels background temperature. This temperature cannot be measured directly independent of fire radiation, so indirect methods must be used to create an estimate of this background value. The most commonly used method of background temperature estimation is through derivation from the surrounding obscuration-free pixels available in the same image, in a contextual estimation process. This method of contextual estimation performs well in cloud-free conditions and in areas with homogeneous landscape characteristics, but increasingly complex sets of rules are required when contextual coverage is not optimal. The effects of alterations to the search radius and sample size on the accuracy of contextually derived brightness temperature are heretofore unexplored. This study makes use of imagery from the AHI-8 geostationary satellite to examine contextual estimators for deriving background temperature, at a range of contextual window sizes and percentages of valid contextual information. Results show that while contextual estimation provides accurate temperatures for pixels with no contextual obscuration, significant deterioration of results occurs when even a small portion of the target pixels surroundings are obscured. To maintain the temperature estimation accuracy, the use of no less than 65% of a target pixels total contextual coverage is recommended. The study also examines the use of expanding window sizes and their effect on temperature estimation. Results show that the accuracy of temperature estimation decreases significantly when expanding the examined window, with a 50% increase in temperature variability when using a larger window size than 5×5 pixels, whilst generally providing limited gains in the total number of temperature estimates (between 0.4%4.4% of all pixels examined).     Simulating Electron Transport and Synchrotron Emission in Radio Galaxies: Shock Acceleration and Synchrotron Aging in Axis-Symmetric Flows

    We introduce a simple and economical but effective method for including relativistic electron transport in multi-dimensional simulations of radio galaxies. The method is designed to follow explicitly diffusive acceleration at shocks, and, in smooth flows 2nd order Fermi acceleration plus adiabatic and synchrotron cooling. We are able to follow both the spatial and energy distributions of the electrons, so that direct synchrotron emission properties can be modeled in time-dependent flows for the first time. Here we present first results in the form of some axis-symmetric MHD simulations of Mach 20 light jet flows. These show clearly the importance of nonsteady terminal shocks that develop in such flows even when the jet inflow is steady. As a result of this and other consequences of the fundamentally driven character of jets, we find complex patterns of emissivities and synchrotron spectra, including steep spectral gradients in hot spots, islands of distinct spectra electrons within the lobes and spectral gradients coming from the dynamical histories of a given flow element rather than from synchrotron aging of the embedded electrons. In addition, spectral aging in the lobes tends to proceed more slowly than one would estimate from regions of high emissivity.Comment: 30 pages of Latex generated text plus 7 figures in gif format.     Diverse Contexts of Zoonotic Transmission of Simian Foamy Viruses in Asia

    In Asia, contact between persons and nonhuman primates is widespread in multiple occupational and nonoccupational contexts. Simian foamy viruses (SFVs) are retroviruses that are prevalent in all species of nonhuman primates. To determine SFV prevalence in humans, we tested 305 persons who lived or worked around nonhuman primates in several South and Southeast Asian countries; 8 (2.6%) were confirmed SFV positive by Western blot and, for some, by PCR. The interspecies interactions that likely resulted in virus transmission were diverse; 5 macaque taxa were implicated as the source of infection. Phylogenetic analysis showed that SFV from 3 infected persons was similar to that from the nonhuman primate populations with which the infected persons reported contact. Thus, SFV infections are likely to be prevalent among persons who live or work near nonhuman primates in Asia
