    Principal component analysis of geoelectrical signals measured in the seismically active area of Basilicata Region (southern Italy)

    International audienceGeoelectrical fluctuations are the end product of several geophysical phenomena. In particular geoelectrical signals measured in seismically active areas can be attributed to stress and strain changes, associated with earthquakes. The complexity of this problem has suggested the development of advanced statistical methods to investigate the heterogeneous nature of these fluctuations. In this paper we analysed the time dynamics of short-term variability of geoelectrical field measured at Giuliano station, located in Basilicata Region, one of the most seismically active areas of southern Italy. We applied the principal component analysis (PCA). The analysis has shown earthquake precursory patterns in the daily variation of the principal components, revealing that the PCA approach is promising for monitoring seismic areas

    Manifestations of fine features of the density of states in the transport properties of KOs2O6

    We performed high-pressure transport measurements on high-quality single crystals of KOs2O6, a beta-pyrochlore superconductor. While the resistivity at high temperatures might approach saturation, there is no sign of saturation at low temperatures, down to the superconducting phase. The anomalous resistivity is accompanied by a nonmetallic behavior in the thermoelectric power (TEP) up to temperatures of at least 700 K, which also exhibits a broad hump with a maximum at 60 K. The pressure influences mostly the low-energy electronic excitations. A simple band model based on enhanced density of states in a narrow window around the Fermi energy (EF) explains the main features of this unconventional behavior in the transport coefficients and its evolution under pressure

    The spectral dimension of random trees

    We present a simple yet rigorous approach to the determination of the spectral dimension of random trees, based on the study of the massless limit of the Gaussian model on such trees. As a byproduct, we obtain evidence in favor of a new scaling hypothesis for the Gaussian model on generic bounded graphs and in favor of a previously conjectured exact relation between spectral and connectivity dimensions on more general tree-like structures.Comment: 14 pages, 2 eps figures, revtex4.     Assisting Forensic Identification through Unsupervised Information Extraction of Free Text Autopsy Reports: The Disappearances Cases during the Brazilian Military Dictatorship

    Anthropological, archaeological, and forensic studies situate enforced disappearance as a strategy associated with the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985), leaving hundreds of persons without identity or cause of death identified. Their forensic reports are the only existing clue for people identification and detection of possible crimes associated with them. The exchange of information among institutions about the identities of disappeared people was not a common practice. Thus, their analysis requires unsupervised techniques, mainly due to the fact that their contextual annotation is extremely time-consuming, difficult to obtain, and with high dependence on the annotator. The use of these techniques allows researchers to assist in the identification and analysis in four areas: Common causes of death, relevant body locations, personal belongings terminology, and correlations between actors such as doctors and police officers involved in the disappearances. This paper analyzes almost 3000 textual reports of missing persons in São Paulo city during the Brazilian dictatorship through unsupervised algorithms of information extraction in Portuguese, identifying named entities and relevant terminology associated with these four criteria. The analysis allowed us to observe terminological patterns relevant for people identification (e.g., presence of rings or similar personal belongings) and automate the study of correlations between actors.     Strong-Coupling Theory of Rattling-Induced Superconductivity

    In order to clarify the mechanism of the enhancement of superconducting transition temperature TcT_{\rm c} due to anharmonic local oscillation of a guest ion in a cage composed of host atoms, i.e., {\it rattling}, we analyze the anharmonic Holstein model by applying the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. From the evaluation of the normal-state electron-phonon coupling constant, it is found that the strong coupling state is developed, when the bottom of a potential for the guest ion becomes wide and flat. Then, TcT_{\rm c} is enhanced with the increase of the anharmonicity in the potential, although TcT_{\rm c} is rather decreased when the potential becomes a double-well type due to very strong anharmonicity. From these results, we propose a scenario of anharmonicity-controlled strong-coupling tendency for superconductivity induced by rattling. We briefly discuss possible relevance of the present scenario with superconductivity in β\beta-pyrochlore oxides.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figure

    Kondo Effect of a Magnetic Ion Vibrating in a Harmonic Potential

    To discuss Kondo effects of a magnetic ion vibrating in the sea of conduction electrons, a generalized Anderson model is derived. The model includes a new channel of hybridization associated with phonon emission or absorption. In the simplest case of the localized electron orbital with the s-wave symmetry, hybridization with p-waves becomes possible. Interesting interplay among the conventional s-wave Kondo effect and the p-wave one and the Yu-Anderson type Kondo effect is found and the ground state phase diagram is determined by using the numerical renormalization group method.     An adaptive cross approximation (ACA) for the extended boundary element method (XBEM) in anisotropic materials

    The extended boundary element method (XBEM) is a modification from the standard BEM, where enrichment functions are embedded into the BEM formulation. The results obtained with this method were seen to be accurate and stable, being especially useful for fracture problems. However, the method suffers from the presence of a linear system containing unsymmetric and fully populated matrices which needs to be solved in order to get the solution of the boundary problem. This can be computationally expensive for problems dealing with multiple cracks for instance.     Lensing Effects on the Protogalaxy Candidate cB58 and their Implications for the Cosmological Constant

    The amplification of the protogalaxy candidate cB58 due to gravitational lensing by the foreground cluster of galaxies MS1512.4+3647 is quantified based on recent ROSAT and ASCA X-ray observations. It is found that the amplification is at most 25 for any reasonable cosmological model with or without cosmological constant. It is also argued that the system may be used to place new constraints on the value of the cosmological constant.
