    Energy Gaps and Kohn Anomalies in Elemental Superconductors

    The momentum and temperature dependence of the lifetimes of acoustic phonons in the elemental superconductors Pb and Nb was determined by resonant spin-echo spectroscopy with neutrons. In both elements, the superconducting energy gap extracted from these measurements was found to converge with sharp anomalies originating from Fermi-surface nesting (Kohn anomalies) at low temperatures. The results indicate electron many-body correlations beyond the standard theoretical framework for conventional superconductivity. A possible mechanism is the interplay between superconductivity and spin- or charge-density-wave fluctuations, which may induce dynamical nesting of the Fermi surface

    Gains from the upgrade of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer FLEXX at the BER-II reactor

    The upgrade of the cold neutron triple-axis spectrometer FLEXX is described. We discuss the characterisation of the gains from the new primary spectrometer, including a larger guide and double focussing monochromator, and present measurements of the energy and momentum resolution and of the neutron flux of the instrument. We found an order of magnitude gain in intensity (at the cost of coarser momentum resolution), and that the incoherent elastic energy widths are measurably narrower than before the upgrade. The much improved count rate should allow the use of smaller single crystals samples and thus enable the upgraded FLEXX spectrometer to continue making leading edge measurements.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 5 table

    Magnetic structure of Cd-doped CeCoIn5

    The heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 is believed to be close to a magnetic instability, but no static magnetic order has been found. Cadmium doping on the In-site shifts the balance between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism to the latter with an extended concentration range where both types of order coexist at low temperatures. We investigated the magnetic structure of nominally 10% Cd-doped CeCoIn5, being antiferromagnetically ordered below T_N=3 K and superconducting below T_c=1.3 K, by elastic neutron scattering. Magnetic intensity was observed only at the ordering wave vector Q_AF = (1/2,1/2,1/2) commensurate with the crystal lattice. Upon entering the superconducting state the magnetic intensity seems to change only little. The commensurate magnetic ordering in CeCo(In1-xCdx)5 is in contrast to the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering observed in the closely related compound CeRhIn5. Our results give new insights in the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in the family of CeTIn5 (T=Co, Rh, and Ir) based compounds.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Momentum-resolved electron-phonon interaction in lead determined by neutron resonance spin-echo spectroscopy

    Neutron resonance spin-echo spectroscopy was used to monitor the temperature evolution of the linewidths of transverse acoustic phonons in lead across the superconducting transition temperature, TcT_c, over an extended range of the Brillouin zone. For phonons with energies below the superconducting energy gap, a linewidth reduction of maximum amplitude 6μ\sim 6 \mueV was observed below TcT_c. The electron-phonon contribution to the phonon lifetime extracted from these data is in satisfactory overall agreement with {\it ab-initio} lattice-dynamical calculations, but significant deviations are found

    Using Height-For-Age Differences (HAD) Instead of Height-For-Age Z-Scores (HAZ) for the Meaningful Measurement of Population-Level Catch-Up in Linear Growth in Children Less Than 5 Years of Age

    Background: Evidence from studies conducted in nutritionally deprived children in low- and middle-income countries (LIMC) in past decades showed little or no population-level catch-up in linear growth (mostly defined as reductions in the absolute height deficit) after 2 years of age. Recent studies, however, have reported population-level catch-up growth in children, defined as positive changes in mean height-for-age z-scores (HAZ). The aim of this paper was to assess whether population-level catch-up in linear growth is found when height-for-age difference (HAD: child’s height compared to standard, expressed in centimeters) is used instead of HAZ. Our premise is that HAZ is inappropriate to measure changes in linear growth over time because they are constructed using standard deviations from cross-sectional data. Methods: We compare changes in growth in populations of children between 2 and 5 years using HAD vs. HAZ using cross-sectional data from 6 Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) and longitudinal data from the Young Lives and the Consortium on Health-Orientated Research in Transitional Societies (COHORTS) studies. Results: Using HAD, we find not only an absence of population-level catch-up in linear growth, but a continued deterioration reflected in a decrease in mean HAD between 2 and 5 years; by contrast, HAZ shows either no change (DHS surveys) or an improvement in mean HAZ (some of the longitudinal data). Population-level growth velocity was also lower than expected (based on standards) in all four Young Lives data sets, confirming the absence of catch-up growth in height. Discussion: We show no evidence of population-level catch-up in linear growth in children between 2 to 5 years of age when using HAD (a measure more appropriate than HAZ to document changes as populations of children age), but a continued deterioration reflected in a decrease in mean HAD. Conclusions: The continued widening of the absolute height deficit after 2 years of age does not challenge the critical importance of investing in improving nutrition during the first 1000 days (i.e., from conception to 2 years of age), but raises a number of research questions including how to prevent continued deterioration and what is the potential of children to benefit from nutrition interventions after 2 years of age. Preventing, rather than reversing linear growth retardation remains the priority for reducing the global burden of malnutritionworldwide
