    Electronic Properties of Naphthalimide-based Ladder-type Systems

    The tuneable electronic and structural properties of organic semiconductors together with their flexibility, light weight, high solution processing and low costs in comparison with inorganic semiconductors are some of the key points for the current interest in the development of π-conjugated small molecules and polymers for a variety of applications. In this project, a combined experimental and theoretical study of two ladder-type compounds functionalized with naphthalimides1 (Figure 1) is performed with the aim to explore the impact of the structure on the optical and charge-transport properties. Compound NDI-TP-Ph-TP has an imidazole group as a spacer ring and NIP-TP-Ph-TP has a spacer ring of pyrazine type. The two molecular systems have been implemented in organic field effect transistors2 (OFETs), to assess their potential as active materials in organic electronics. For this reason, organic electronics has emerged as a research field with great potential and interest. In this project we have studied, both experimentally and theoretically, two ladder-type compounds functionalized with naphthalimides (Figure 1). The two molecular systems have been implemented in organic field effect transistors (OFETs), to assess their potential as active materials in organic electronics. Both compounds show p-type type mobility, moreover, NDI-TP-Ph-TP material also displays low n-type mobility, presenting a certain ambipolar character.     Patología implanto-endodóncica: concepto, tipos, diagnóstico, tratamiento y prevención.

    La patología implanto-endodóncica (PIE) está descrita en la literatura implantológica como una de las causas de periimplantitis apical, entendida como la lesión osteolítica en la región apical del implante, con normal osteointegración de su porción coronal, provocada por la infección por contigüidad a partir de la lesión periapical del diente adyacente. Pero el concepto de PIE no sólo abarca la periimplantitis retrógrada por contaminación diente-a-implante, sino también los procesos inflamatorios periapicales en dientes adyacentes al implante por contaminación implante-adiente, cuando la colocación del implante provoca la necrosis del diente adyacente y la consiguiente periodontitis apical. Incluso podríamos incluir dentro de la PIE los casos de periimplantitis apical en implantes postextracción provocada por la infección residual presente en el alvéolo de un diente extraído con periodontitis apical. En definitiva, la PIE incluye las lesiones endodóncicas e implantarias apicales que son el resultado de infecciones residuales o por contigüidad entre diente e implante. En esta revisión bibliográfica se define y clasifica la PIE, repasándose la casuística publicada así como su influencia en el resultado del tratamiento implantológico

    Tunable electroactive oligothiophene-naphthalimide semiconductors via end-capped engineering: cumulative effects beyond the linker

    Aiming to obtain novel functional semiconducting materials for their use in organic electronics, the combination of strong donor moieties with electron-withdrawing units is one of the most useful strategies to obtain ambipolar semiconductors with tunable properties. Nowadays most of the efforts headed to efficient materials are based on small changes in the alkyl pendant chains or by replacing single atoms. However, a precise design of new functional materials is still challenging. For this reason, in this work we present a new synthetic approach for achieving redox amphoteric organic semiconductors by tuning their opto-electrochemical properties via rational chemical modifications. All these materials present low-lying LUMO levels, lower than −4.00 eV with broad absorption up to 800 nm in the UV-Vis-NIR spectra. In addition, they have been characterized by DFT, absorption and Raman vibrational spectroscopies, while their charge stabilization abilities are studied by means of spectroelectrochemical techniques. The results point out to a quite complex electronic scenario that goes beyond the expected cumulative effects of the independent molecular units constituting the final molecular assembly.Funding for open access charge: Universidad de Málaga / CBU

    Tuning the charge stabilization and transport in naphthalimide-based semiconductors via a fused-ring and core-engineering strategy

    The synthesis and characterization of a family of rationally designed compounds based on naphtha- limide units attached, through conjugated nitrogenated linkers (i.e. pyrazine and imidazoline units), to fused thiophene-based moieties is shown. This combination of different donor–acceptor moieties allows fine tuning of the HOMO and LUMO energy levels, and thus the modulation of their electronic properties.     Neuroactive steroids influence peripheral myelination: A promising opportunity for preventing or treating age-dependent dysfunctions of peripheral nerves

    The process of aging deeply influences morphological and functional parameters of peripheral nerves. The observations summarized here indicate that the deterioration of myelin occurring in the peripheral nerves during aging may be explained by the fall of the levels of the major peripheral myelin proteins [e.g., glycoprotein Po (Po) and peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22)]. Neuroactive steroids, such as progesterone (PROG), dihydroprogesterone (5α-DH PROG), and tetrahydroprogesterone (3α,5α-TH PROG), are able to stimulate the low expression of these two myelin proteins present in the sciatic nerve of aged male rats. Since Po and PMP22 play an important physiological role in the maintenance of the multilamellar structure of PNS myelin, we have evaluated the effect of PROG and its neuroactive derivatives, 5α-DH PROG and 3α,5α-TH PROG, on the morphological alterations of myelinated fibers in the sciatic nerve of 22-24-month-old male rats. Data obtained clearly indicate that neuroactive steroids are able to reduce aging-associated morphological abnormalities of myelin and aging-associated myelin fiber loss in the sciatic nerve. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd.     Investigating mutations in the genes GDF9 and BMP15 in Pelibuey sheep through the amplification-refractory mutation system with tetra-primers

    Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) or mutations are variations with a broad distribution in the genome and, as part of genetic studies, SNP allow the identification of allelic variants related to characteristics of economic importance in sheep production. However, the identification of SNP and their genotypes through sequencing is expensive, as it requires specialized materials and equipment. The objective of this study was to identify polymorphisms and their genotypes in the growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9) and bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP15) genes in Pelibuey sheep using the tetra-primer amplification-refractory mutation system through polymerase chain reaction (T-ARMS-PCR). DNA extraction and amplification of BMP15 and GDF9 were conducted from blood samples contained in WhatmanTM FTATM cards from 60 multiparous Pelibuey ewes with reproductive records. The T-ARMS-PCR methodology allowed the identification of wild-type genotypes and mutated homozygous genotypes in polymorphisms G4 and G6 of GDF9, whereas mutations in the BMP15 gene were not found. These results were confirmed by sequencing. In conclusion, the T-ARMS-PCR methodology allowed the identification of mutated and wild-type genotypes in SNP G4 and G6 of GDF9, although no mutations were found in BMP15 in Pelibuey sheep. This technique was found to be reliable, rapid, and easily applied to identify polymorphic genotypes

    Home enteral nutrition (HEN) allows, besides guaranteeing a correct nutricional treatment, improving patient autonomy and wellbeing along with a reduction of the expenditure on hospitalization. Due to the characteristics of this treatment, which is administered at home, Health Education becomes of high importance: the patient, their family and/or caregivers need to learn theoretical and practical aspects of this procedure. For this reason, one of the nursing tasks could be not only the identification and treatment of its complications, but also being a patient/family educator.La nutrición enteral domiciliaria (NED) permite, además de garantizar un correcto tratamiento nutricional, favorecer la autonomía y el bienestar del paciente, junto con una reducción del coste sanitario por hospitalización. Debido al carácter domiciliario de esta terapéutica, adquiere especial importancia en este procedimiento la Educación para la Salud (EpS), que deberá manifestarse mediante un aprendizaje teórico-práctico al paciente, familia y/o cuidadores. Es por esto, que el profesional de Enfermería puede ser requerido para atender a este tipo de pacientes, no sólo desde el punto de vista asistencial, con la identificación y tratamiento de las complicaciones, sino por su papel de educador al paciente y a sus familiares
