    General behavior of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction as a function of the relative velocity

    We have studied volume integrals of the central part of optical potentials extracted from data analyses for a variety of light and heavy systems. The data-extracted integrals present a quite simple behavior as a function of the relative velocity between target and projectile. This behavior is system independent and, therefore, it reflects a feature of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction itself. The overall results are in good agreement with the predictions of the São Paulo potential, which is a model for the nuclear interaction that so far has been employed mostly in analyses of heavy-ion reactions

    A preliminary study on the use of jenny colostrum to improve quality in extenders for freezing donkey semen

    Sperm quality in donkeys (Equus asinus) after freezing thawing is still considered lower than that from other animals, including horses. The aim of this study was to test a new freezing extender supplemented with jenny colostrum on donkey sperm. After thawing, we evaluated sperm motility by means of computer-assisted analysis, viability by SYBR-14 and propidium iodide (PI), membrane functional integrity by HOS-test and acrosome integrity by isothiocyanate conjugated with peanut agglutinin (FITC-PNA) and PI. Ejaculates were collected from five fertile Donkeys. Sperm samples were pooled, diluted and cryopreserved into three experimental extender groups: BotuCrio®, lactose-extender supplemented with egg yolk (20%) and lactose-extender supplemented with jenny colostrum (20%). The results demonstrated that lactose-jenny colostrum samples displayed significantly higher values in almost all parameters evaluated (p < 0.05) compared with the other two extenders after thawing (BotuCrio® and lactose-egg yolk based extender, respectively) –Total Motility, Viability, HOS test, VCL, VSL and VAP. Acrosome status, LIN, STR and WOB despite showing lower values, none of them were statistically significant (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the extender containing jenny colostrum can be successfully used for donkey semen crypreservation and could effectively improve donkey sperm qualities after freezing -thawing

    Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Management.

    Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA, or Morquio syndrome type A) is an inherited metabolic lysosomal disease caused by the deficiency of the N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase enzyme. The deficiency of this enzyme accumulates the specific glycosaminoglycans (GAG), keratan sulfate, and chondroitin-6-sulfate mainly in bone, cartilage, and its extracellular matrix. GAG accumulation in these lesions leads to unique skeletal dysplasia in MPS IVA patients. Clinical, radiographic, and biochemical tests are needed to complete the diagnosis of MPS IVA since some clinical characteristics in MPS IVA are overlapped with other disorders. Early and accurate diagnosis is vital to optimizing patient management, which provides a better quality of life and prolonged life-time in MPS IVA patients. Currently, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are available for patients with MPS IVA. However, ERT and HSCT do not have enough impact on bone and cartilage lesions in patients with MPS IVA. Penetrating the deficient enzyme into an avascular lesion remains an unmet challenge, and several innovative therapies are under development in a preclinical study. In this review article, we comprehensively describe the current diagnosis, treatment, and management for MPS IVA. We also illustrate developing future therapies focused on the improvement of skeletal dysplasia in MPS IVA

    Effect of Mare Colostrum in Extenders for Freezing Stallion Semen

    This study aimed to evaluate the addition of mare colostrum in stallion freezing extenders to improve sperm quality. First, colostrum samples were collected from four mares after the foal''s birth and their composition was determined. Ejaculates were collected from nine fertile stallions. Sperm samples were pooled, diluted, and cryopreserved into three experimental extender groups: Lactose-based extender supplemented with mare colostrum (20%), lactose-based extender supplemented with egg yolk (20%), and BotuCrio. The quality of the post-thaw semen samples were evaluated assessing sperm motility by means of computer-assisted analysis, viability by SYBR-14 and propidium iodine (PI) stain, acrosome integrity by fluorescein isothiocyanate and peanut agglutinine (FITC-PNA) and PI stain, plasma membrane functionality by hypo-osmotic swelling (HOS) test, and DNA denaturation by acridine orange (AO) test. There were no significant differences in the percentages of total motility, acrosome integrity, and DNA fragmentation among the extenders after thawing. Kinematics parameters showed significantly higher values in BotuCrio than in lactose extenders (P < .05). BotuCrio and lactose colostrum extender yielded significantly better rates for HOS-test, linearity, straightness, and wobble than egg-yolk extender (P < .05). However, in relation to sperm viability, lactose egg yolk extender showed significantly better results in comparison to the others seminal experimental media (P < .05). In conclusion, the incorporation of mare colostrum into cryopreservation media protected the sperm against cold-shock; therefore, it may be a good cryoprotectant agent alternative in extenders for freezing stallion semen

    Investigation of Coulomb dipole polarization effects on reactions involving exotic nuclei

    We have analyzed elastic scattering angular distributions and total reaction cross sections of the exotic nuclei Li9,11 on Pb208, at energies below and above the Coulomb barrier. For this purpose, we have used an optical potential with no adjustable parameters, composed by the nuclear São Paulo potential, derived from the nonlocal nature of the interaction, and the Coulomb dipole polarization potential, derived from the semiclassical theory of Coulomb excitation. Within this formalism, we identified an unusual long-range absorption for the Li11+Pb208 system, which is dominated by the Coulomb interaction. We compare it to the absorption mechanisms observed for He6+Pb208 which, unlike those of Li11+Pb208, take place at small interacting distances, where both Coulomb and nuclear interactions are important. The proposed approach shows to be a fundamental basis to study reactions involving exotic nuclei

    The software project scheduling problem: A scalability analysis of multi-objective metaheuristics

    Applied Soft Computing 15, 136-148Computer aided techniques for scheduling software projects are a crucial step in the software development process within the highly competitive software industry. The Software Project Scheduling (SPS) problem relates to the decision of who does what during a software project lifetime, thus involving mainly both people-intensive activities and human resources. Two major conflicting goals arise when scheduling a software project: reducing both its cost and duration. A multi-objective approach is therefore the natural way of facing the SPS problem. As companies are getting involved in larger and larger software projects, there is an actual need of algorithms that are able to deal with the tremendous search spaces imposed. In this paper, we analyze the scalability of eight multi-objective algorithms when they are applied to the SPS problem using instances of increasing size. The algorithms are classical algorithms from the literature (NSGA-II, PAES, and SPEA2) and recent proposals (DEPT, MOCell, MOABC, MO-FA, and GDE3).     Serum sample containing endogenous antibodies interfering with multiple hormone immunoassays. Laboratory strategies to detect interference

    Objectives: Endogenous antibodies (EA) may interfere with immunoassays, causing erroneous results for hormone analyses. As (in most cases) this interference arises from the assay format and most immunoassays, even from different manufacturers, are constructed in a similar way, it is possible for a single type of EA to interfere with different immunoassays. Here we describe the case of a patient whose serum sample contains EA that interfere several hormones tests. We also discuss the strategies deployed to detect interference. Subjects and methods: Over a period of four years, a 30-year-old man was subjected to a plethora of laboratory and imaging diagnostic procedures as a consequence of elevated hormone results, mainly of pituitary origin, which did not correlate with the overall clinical picture. Results: Once analytical interference was suspected, the best laboratory approaches to investigate it were sample reanalysis on an alternative platform and sample incubation with antibody blocking tubes. Construction of an in-house ''nonsense'' sandwich assay was also a valuable strategy to confirm interference. In contrast, serial sample dilutions were of no value in our case, while polyethylene glycol (PEG) precipitation gave inconclusive results, probably due to the use of inappropriate PEG concentrations for several of the tests assayed. Conclusions: Clinicians and laboratorians must be aware of the drawbacks of immunometric assays, and alert to the possibility of EA interference when results do not fit the clinical pattern

    Persistence and intensity of soil water repellency from soils with andic properties from the Campania region (Southwest, Italy) under different forest types

    Congreso celebrado del 2-6, julio, 2012, en Fiera del Levante, Bari, Italia.Soil water repellency (SWR) is a property of many soils that is getting more and more interesting for the scientific community, because of its consequences on soil erosion risk, runoff or infiltration rates and even plant ecology. The presence of hydrophobic organic acids released by roots and plant tissues, fungal activity, organic matter mineralization rates, or wildfires are considered the main causes of SWR. Some of the consequences of SWR are reduced soil infiltration rates, enhanced runoff flow and soil erosion. Significance of these effects depends upon the severity and spatial variability of SWR. SWR is often associated to vegetation types, although it cannot be assumed that certain species always induce water repellency under natural conditions. Because of resins, waxes and aromatic oils in their tissues, evergreen trees as eucalyptus and coniferous are usually associated with soil hydrophobicity, although it has been found also in a variety of soils, climates and vegetation types. But the relationship between water repellent soils and plant species is not always one-to-one. Soil properties as texture, aggregation, acidity, microbiome and other are also implied in the development of hydrophobicity. Regarding organic matter, several authors have reported inconsistent results after studying the relationship between soil organic matter content and SWR. A possible explanation for this is that quality of organic matter is more important than content. Consequently, it is necessary to investigate the role that organic matter content and properties play in the development of hydrophobicity in different soil and vegetation types. The objective of this research is the study the relationship between SWR and organic matter properties in andic soils from the Campania region (SW Italy) under different vegetation types.Peer reviewe
