    Acceptability and feasibility of a virtual community of practice to primary care professionals regarding patient empowerment : A qualitative pilot study

    Background: Virtual communities of practice (vCoPs) facilitate online learning via the exchange of experiences and knowledge between interested participants. Compared to other communities, vCoPs need to overcome technological structures and specific barriers. Our objective was to pilot the acceptability and feasibility of a vCoP aimed at improving the attitudes of primary care professionals to the empowerment of patients with chronic conditions. Methods: We used a qualitative approach based on 2 focus groups: one composed of 6 general practitioners and the other of 6 practice nurses. Discussion guidelines on the topics to be investigated were provided to the moderator. Sessions were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was performed using the ATLAS-ti software. Results: The available operating systems and browsers and the lack of suitable spaces and time were reported as the main difficulties with the vCoP. The vCoP was perceived to be a flexible learning mode that provided up-to-date resources applicable to routine practice and offered a space for the exchange of experiences and approaches. Conclusions: The results from this pilot study show that the vCoP was considered useful for learning how to empower patients. However, while vCoPs have the potential to facilitate learning and as shown create professional awareness regarding patient empowerment, attention needs to be paid to technological and access issues and the time demands on professionals. We collected relevant inputs to improve the features, content and educational methods to be included in further vCoP implementation. Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02757781. Este interés multidisciplinario demuestra la importancia y la complejidad del tema espacial y territorial, y reclama la necesidad de su estudio y comprensión interdisciplinarios, como se intenta con esta publicación

    Current trend in synthesis, Post-Synthetic modifications and biological applications of Nanometal-Organic frameworks (NMOFs)

    Since the early reports of MOFs and their interesting properties, research involving these materials has grown wide in scope and applications. Various synthetic approaches have ensued in view of obtaining materials with optimised properties, the extensive scope of application spanning from energy, gas sorption, catalysis biological applications has meant exponentially evolved over the years. The far‐reaching synthetic and PSM approaches and porosity control possibilities have continued to serve as a motivation for research on these materials. With respect to the biological applications, MOFs have shown promise as good candidates in applications involving drug delivery, BioMOFs, sensing, imaging amongst others. Despite being a while away from successful entry into the market, observed results in sensing, drug delivery, and imaging put these materials on the spot light as candidates poised to usher in a revolution in biology. In this regard, this review article focuses current approaches in synthesis, post functionalization and biological applications of these materials with particular attention on drug delivery, imaging, sensing and BioMOFs

    Reactions and products revealed by NMR spectra of deuterated dimethylsulfoxide with iodomethane in neutral and basic media

    <div><p>Reactions occurring within each one of two mixtures, a mixture of deuterated dimethylsulfoxide, DMSO-<i>d</i><sub>6</sub>, with CH<sub>3</sub>I (system I) and another mixture of DMSO-<i>d</i><sub>6</sub> with CH<sub>3</sub>I, NaOH and water (system II), were monitored by 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (<sup>1</sup>H, <sup>13</sup>C, heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation, heteronuclear multiple bond correlation and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy). The analysis of the spectra as a function of reaction time revealed the formation of methoxy-bis(trideuteromethyl)sulfonium iodide, <b>3</b>; the precipitation of hexadeuterated trimethyloxosulfonium, <b>2a</b>; a methyl exchange between DMSO-<i>d</i><sub>6</sub> and <b>2a</b> to produce trideuterated dimethylsulfoxide, DMSO-<i>d</i><sub>3</sub>, <b>4</b>, and nona-deuterated trimethyloxosulfonium iodide, <b>2b</b>; and the production of small quantities of methanol, <b>5</b>, trideuterated dimethylsulfide, <b>6</b>, and dimethyl ether, <b>7</b>, in both systems. Only system II precipitated deuterated [Na<sub>4</sub>(DMSO-<i>d</i><sub>x</sub>)<sub>15</sub>][(I<sub>3</sub>)<sub>3</sub>I], <b>1a</b>, a green solid with metallic shine that corresponds to an isotopomer of <b>1</b>, which is produced by the self-assembly of DMSO and CH<sub>3</sub>I in the presence of NaOH and water.</p></div

    Supramolecular metal-organic frameworks that display high homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic activity for H2 production

    Self-assembly has a unique presence when it comes to creating complicated, ordered supramolecular architectures from simple components under mild conditions. Here, we describe a self-assembly strategy for the generation of the first homogeneous supramolecular metal-organic framework (SMOF-1) in water at room temperature from a hexaarmed [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)-based precursor and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The solution-phase periodicity of this cubic transition metal-cored supramolecular organic framework (MSOF) is confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering and diffraction experiments, which, as supported by TEM imaging, is commensurate with the periodicity in the solid state. We further demonstrate that SMOF-1 adsorbs anionic Wells−Dawson-type polyoxometalates (WD-POMs) in a one-cage-one-guest manner to give WD-POM@SMOF-1 hybrid assemblies. Upon visible-light (500 nm) irradiation, such hybrids enable fast multi-electron injection from photosensitive [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) units to redox-active WD-POM units, leading to efficient hydrogen production in aqueous media and in organic media. The demonstrated strategy opens the door for the development of new classes of liquid-phase and solid-phase ordered porous materials
