    Effects of active musical engagement during physical exercise on anxiety, pain and motivation in patients with chronic pain

    The experience of anxiety is central to the development of chronic pain. Music listening has been previously shown to exert analgesic effects. Here we tested if an active engagement in music making is more beneficial than music listening in terms of anxiety and pain levels during physical activity that is often avoided in patients with chronic pain. We applied a music feedback paradigm that combines music making and sports exercise, and which has been previously shown to enhance mood. We explored this method as an intervention to potentially reduce anxiety in a group of patients with chronic pain (N = 24, 20 female and 4 men; age range 34 - 64, M = 51.67, SD = 6.84) and with various anxiety levels. All participants performed two conditions: one condition, Jymmin, where exercise equipment was modified with music feedback so that it could be played like musical instruments by groups of three. Second, a conventional workout condition where groups of three performed exercise on the same devices but where they listened to the same type of music passively. Participants’ levels of anxiety, mood, pain and self-efficacy were assessed with standardized psychological questionnaires before the experiment and after each condition. Results demonstrate that exercise with musical feedback reduced anxiety values in patients with chronic pain significantly as compared to conventional workout with passive music listening. There were no significant overall changes in pain, but patients with greater anxiety levels compared to those with moderate anxiety levels were observed to potentially benefit more from the music feedback intervention in terms of alleviation of pain. Furthermore, it was observed that patients during Jymmin more strongly perceived motivation through others. The observed diminishing effects of Jymmin on anxiety have a high clinical relevance, and in a longer term the therapeutic application could help to break the Anxiety Loop of Pain, reducing chronic pain. The intervention method, however, also has immediate benefits to chronic pain rehabilitation, increasing the motivation to work out, and facilitating social bonding

    Comparative anatomy of nitrergic intrinsic choroidal neurons (ICN) in various avian species

    Intrinsic choroidal neurons (ICN) represent a peculiar feature of eyes in higher primates and birds. They account for up to 2000 in human and duck eyes but are virtually absent or rare in all other mammalian species investigated so far. It has been suggested that ICN are involved in regulation of ocular blood supply, hence influencing intraocular pressure, and changes in choroidal thickness, thus influencing accommodation. The present study was undertaken in order to compare differences in various avian species with respect to ICN as well as to provide data on some avian species relevant for experimental ophthalmic research, i.e. chicken and quail. Choroids from 12 avian species were processed for NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry or, in some cases, neuronal nitric oxide synthase immunocytochemistry. ICN were quantified and normalized to mean choroidal area. Three choroids of each galliformes (i.e. chicken, quail, turkey) and anseriformes (i.e. Muscovy duck, Mallard duck, goose) were rastered in squares of 1 mm(2) and x/y coordinates were transferred into a 3D-diagram with the amount of ICN represented in the z-axis. ICN were detected in all species investigated. They were predominantly small cells with soma diameters of 20-30 mum. In turkey, and to a lesser amount in chicken, a subpopulation of ICN with somal diameters of up to 70 mum was observed. Highest mean cell counts were found in goose (6195(.)4; turkey 3558(.)4; chicken 1681(.)4; Muscovy duck 785(.)4; Mallard duck 640(.)8; quail 440(.)2). Normalized to choroidal area, highest mean cell counts were (per mm(2)): 12(.)62 in goose, 4(.)42 in both chicken and turkey, 2(.)86 in quail, 2(.)66 in Mallard duck and 1(.)89 in Muscovy duck. In galliformes, ICN were found to be accumulated temporo-cranial, while in anseriformes they were arranged in a more belt-like fashion, passing from cranio-nasal to temporo-caudal. Our results show that besides Muscovy duck, other avian species appear as suitable models for further functional experiments on ICN. The temporo-cranial accumulation of ICN in galliformes and the belt-like arrangement in anseriformes may reflect special functional requirements in regions of high visual acuity.     “Plotting Friendship: Male Bonds in Early Nineteenth-Century British Fiction” examines the prevalence of stories about male friendship and all-male community in British popular fiction written in the early nineteenth century. Writers in an exploding literary market created hybrid genres that imitated existing ones, but mixed generic attributes. Most of these novels remain critically neglected because of their so-called undeveloped styles and awkward mixed forms. This dissertation examines forgotten works like Life in London, Finish to Life, Paul Clifford, and Jack Sheppard to provide a fuller picture of the culture, the literary marketplace, and readers’ desires, but it also reads afresh canonized novels like Frankenstein and Oliver Twist. The illustrations by George and Robert Cruikshank bring whole other narratives of male friendship; while they ostensibly confirm the same stories, more often than not the visual possesses its own point of view. The illustrations are valuable for tracing what can and cannot be shown visually, as opposed to verbally. Each chapter traces historically specific types of male protagonists who prioritize friendship over marriage. Each features a different kind of all-male triangle. In Chapter One, it structures a cautionary tale of male friends who love too deeply. In Chapter Two, we find a celebrated trio who instruct young male readers urban life. Chapter Three shows us how authors used all-male triangles to invoke images of rogue story traditions within Regency settings. In Chapter Four, elderly bachelors rescue and adopt a workhouse orphan. The wide variety of homosociality and non-connubial heterosexuality represented in these novels, considered in conjunction with their immediate popularity, and their redistribution in subsequent decades, exposes the critical limitations of historical and sexual models based on trajectories of increasing homosocial marginalization and homosexual repression and.     Threshold J/ψ−J/\psi- production in nucleon-nucleon collisions

    We analyze J/ψ−J/\psi- production in nucleon-nucleon collisions near threshold in the framework of a general model independent formalism, which can be applied to any reaction N+N→N+N+V0N+N\to N+N+V^0, where V0=ωV^0=\omega, ϕ\phi, or J/ψJ/\psi. Such reactions show large isotopic effects: a large difference for pppp- and pnpn-collisions, which is due to the different spin structure of the corresponding matrix elements. The analysis of the spin structure and of the polarization observables is based on symmetry properties of the strong interaction. Using existing experimental data on the different decays of J/ψ−J/\psi-meson, we suggest a model for N+N→N+N+J/ψN+N\to N+N+J/\psi, based on t−t-channel η+π\eta+\pi-exchanges. We predict polarization phenomena for the n+p→n+p+J/ψn+p\to n+p+J/\psi-reaction and the ratio of cross sections for npnp and pppp-collisions. For the processes η(π)+N→N+J/ψ\eta(\pi)+N\to N+J/\psi we apply two different approaches: vector meson exchange and local four-particle interaction. In both cases we find larger J/ψJ/\psi-production in npnp-collisions, with respect to pppp-collisions.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure

    Rate and Risk Factors Associated With Prolonged Opioid Use After Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Importance: Prolonged opioid use after surgery may be associated with opioid dependency and increased health care use. However, published studies have reported varying estimates of the magnitude of prolonged opioid use and risk factors associated with the transition of patients to long-term opioid use. Objectives: To evaluate the rate and characteristics of patient-level risk factors associated with increased risk of prolonged use of opioids after surgery. Data Sources: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, a search of MEDLINE, Embase, and Google Scholar from inception to August 30, 2017, was performed, with an updated search performed on June 30, 2019. Key words may include opioid analgesics, general surgery, surgical procedures, persistent opioid use, and postoperative pain. Study Selection: Of 7534 articles reviewed, 33 studies were included. Studies were included if they involved participants 18 years or older, evaluated opioid use 3 or more months after surgery, and reported the rate and adjusted risk factors associated with prolonged opioid use after surgery. Data Extraction and Synthesis: The Meta-analysis of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) reporting guidelines were followed. Two reviewers independently assessed and extracted the relevant data. Main Outcomes and Measures: The weighted pooled rate and odds ratios (ORs) of risk factors were calculated using the random-effects model. Results: The 33 studies included 1 922 743 individuals, with 1 854 006 (96.4%) from the US. In studies with available sex and age information, participants were mostly female (1 031 399; 82.7%) and had a mean (SD) age of 59.3 (12.8) years. The pooled rate of prolonged opioid use after surgery was 6.7% (95% CI, 4.5%-9.8%) but decreased to 1.2% (95% CI, 0.4%-3.9%) in restricted analyses involving only opioid-naive participants at baseline. The risk factors with the strongest associations with prolonged opioid use included preoperative use of opioids (OR, 5.32; 95% CI, 2.94-9.64) or illicit cocaine (OR, 4.34; 95% CI, 1.50-12.58) and a preoperative diagnosis of back pain (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.63-2.58). No significant differences were observed with various study-level factors, including a comparison of major vs minor surgical procedures (pooled rate: 7.0%; 95% CI, 4.9%-9.9% vs 11.1%; 95% CI, 6.0%-19.4%; P = .20). Across all of our analyses, there was substantial variability because of heterogeneity instead of sampling error. Conclusions and Relevance: The findings suggest that prolonged opioid use after surgery may be a substantial burden to public health. It appears that strategies, such as proactively screening for at-risk individuals, should be prioritized

    Apaf-1 and caspase-9 do not act as tumor suppressors in myc-induced lymphomagenesis or mouse embryo fibroblast transformation

    Based on experiments with cultured fibroblasts, the apoptosis regulators caspase-9 and Apaf-1 are hypothesized to function as tumor suppressors. To investigate their in vivo role in lymphomagenesis, an IgH enhancer-driven c-myc transgene was crossed onto Apaf-1−/− and caspase-9−/− mice. Due to perinatal lethality, EÎŒ-myc transgenic Apaf-1−/− or caspase-9−/− fetal liver cells were used to reconstitute lethally irradiated recipient mice. Surprisingly, no differences were seen in rate, incidence, or severity of lymphoma with loss of Apaf-1 or caspase-9, and Apaf-1 was not a critical determinant of anticancer drug sensitivity of c-myc–induced lymphomas. Moreover, loss of Apaf-1 did not promote oncogene-induced transformation of mouse embryo fibroblasts. Thus, Apaf-1 and caspase-9 do not suppress c-myc–induced lymphomagenesis and embryo fibroblast transformation

    Brazilian Buffalo Genetic Variability by Cross-Specific Microsatellite Set

    Buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are widely distributed and were introduced to Brazil in 1895. Most of the molecular genetic characterization of buffaloes has been done with cross-specific (cattle) markers, but few of them include Brazilian populations. Nineteen commonly used cattle microsatellites were tested to develop a multiplexed set of microsatellites and characterize Brazilian buffalo. Three PCR mixes were finally developed with the 11 markers that succeed in amplify and were polymorphic (58%). The average number of alleles was 5.42, with an average observed and expected heterocigozity of 0.441 and 0.695, respectively. As it was expected, Brazilian buffalo variability was lower than the previously reported from the domestication centres (China and India), but higher than the seriously selected European populations. The exclusion power calculated for the eleven markers in Brazilian buffalo was 0.9999999996, this allows its use in DNA based traceability.Instituto de Genética Veterinari

    MICU1 regulation of mitochondrial Ca(2+) uptake dictates survival and tissue regeneration.

    Mitochondrial Ca(2+) uptake through the recently discovered Mitochondrial Calcium Uniporter (MCU) is controlled by its gatekeeper Mitochondrial Calcium Uptake 1 (MICU1). However, the physiological and pathological role of MICU1 remains unclear. Here we show that MICU1 is vital for adaptation to postnatal life and for tissue repair after injury. MICU1 knockout is perinatally lethal in mice without causing gross anatomical defects. We used liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy as a physiological stress response model. Upon MICU1 loss, early priming is unaffected, but the pro-inflammatory phase does not resolve and liver regeneration fails, with impaired cell cycle entry and extensive necrosis. Ca(2+) overload-induced mitochondrial permeability transition pore (PTP) opening is accelerated in MICU1-deficient hepatocytes. PTP inhibition prevents necrosis and rescues regeneration. Thus, our study identifies an unanticipated dependence of liver regeneration on MICU1 and highlights the importance of regulating MCU under stress conditions when the risk of Ca(2+) overload is elevated
