    Communicating Mental Illness in the Black American Community

    Human-human interactions are of central relevance for the success in professional and occupational environments, which also substantially influence quality of life. This is especially true in the case of individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA), who experience deficits in social cognition that often lead to social exclusion and unemployment. Despite good education and high motivation, individuals with HFA do not reach employment rates that are substantially higher than 50 %. This is an alarmingly high rate of unemployment considering that the United Nations have recently emphasized the inclusion of handicapped persons as a mandatory human right. To date, the specific needs of autistic persons with respect to their working environment are largely unexplored. It remains moreover an open question how support systems and activities, including newly developed communication devices for professional environments of individuals with HFA, should look like. The German health and social care systems are not adequately prepared for the proper support of this population. This leads us to suggest that supported employment programs should be developed for adults with HFA that specifically address their needs and requirements. Such programs should comprise (1) the adequate assessment of HFA, including a neuropsychological profile and an individual matching of persons' preferences with requirements of the working place, (2) on-the-job coaching activities that include systematic communication and interaction training, and (3) instruction of non-autistic peers, including colleagues and supervisors, about weaknesses and strengths of HFA

    Increased activation in the bilateral anterior insulae in response to others in pain in mothers compared to non-mothers

    Empathy allows us to share emotions and encourages us to help others. It is especially important in the context of parenting where children’s wellbeing is dependent on their parents’ understanding and fulfilment of their needs. To date, little is known about differences in empathy responses of parents and non-parents. Using stimuli depicting adults and children in pain, this study focuses on the interaction of motherhood and neural responses in areas associated with empathy. Mothers showed higher activation to both adults and children in pain in the bilateral anterior insulae, key regions of empathy for pain. Additionally, mothers more strongly activated the inferior frontal, superior temporal and the medial superior frontal gyrus. Differences between adult and child stimuli were only found in occipital areas in both mothers and non-mothers. Our results suggest a stronger neural response to others in pain in mothers than non-mothers regardless of whether the person is a child or an adult. This could indicate a possible influence of motherhood on overall neural responses to others in pain rather than motherhood specifically shaping child-related responses. Alternatively, stronger responses to others in pain could increase the likelihood for women to be in a relationship and subsequently to have a child.Peer Reviewe

    How much of Me do I see in You: Neural correlates of self-other distinction in the affective domain

    When inferring mental states of others, individuals’ judgments are influenced by their own state of mind, which has been referred to as egocentric bias. Especially in situations where one holds a different mental state than another person to be interpreted, self-other differentiation is key for an accurate interpretation on the other person’s mind. It has been suggested that the right supramarginal gyrus (rSMG) is involved in self-other differentiation and overcoming egocentric bias in the affective domain. In a double-blind, randomized study 47 healthy adults received active or sham anodal tDCS (1mA, 20min) or a sham stimulation to the rSMG prior to performing a newly developed emotional egocentricity paradigm (SOFE, Self-Other Facial Emotion Judgment Task). In SOFE, subjects are presented with emotionally ambiguous situations (happy or fearful) in which they have to continuously rate 1) their own emotion and 2) the emotion of another person whose facial expression is either congruent or incongruent to the subject’s emotion. Analyses confirmed the presence of an emotional egocentric bias in incongruent trials. We furthermore found that active tDCS applied to the rSMG increased subjects’ ability to overcome egocentric judgments. This effect was valence dependent with significant effects when inferring affective states of happy faces right after imagining oneself in a fear-evoking situation (p<0.05). Our findings extend previous research showing a causal role of the rSMG for emotional self-other distinction to the inferring of emotional states from pictorial stimuli. They additionally point towards valence-specific patterns of rSMG functionality. In a next step the SOFE task will be applied in autism spectrum disorder to characterize egocentric bias suppression and SMG network integrity in an effort to elucidate social cognitive dysfunction in affected individuals

    The Edinburgh Social Cognition Test (ESCoT):Examining the effects of age on a new measure of theory of mind and social norm understanding

    <div><p>Current measures of social cognition have shown inconsistent findings regarding the effects of healthy aging. Moreover, no tests are currently available that allow clinicians and researchers to examine cognitive and affective theory of mind (ToM) and understanding of social norms within the same test. To address these limitations, we present the Edinburgh Social Cognition Test (ESCoT) which assesses cognitive and affective ToM and inter- and intrapersonal understanding of social norms. We examined the effects of age, measures of intelligence and the Broader Autism Phenotype (BAP) on the ESCoT and established tests of social cognition. Additionally, we investigated the convergent validity of the ESCoT based on traditional social cognition measures. The ESCoT was administered alongside Reading the Mind in Films (RMF), Reading the Mind in Eyes (RME), Judgement of Preference and Social Norm Questionnaire to 91 participants (30 aged 18–35 years, 30 aged 45–60 years and 31 aged 65–85 years). Poorer performance on the cognitive and affective ToM ESCoT subtests were predicted by increasing age. The affective ToM ESCoT subtest and RMF were predicted by gender, where being female predicted better performance. Unlike the ESCoT, better performance on the RMF was predicted by higher verbal comprehension and perceptual reasoning abilities, while better performance on the RME was predicted by higher verbal comprehension scores. Lower scores on inter-and intrapersonal understanding of social norms were both predicted by the presence of more autism-like traits while poorer interpersonal understanding of social norms performance was predicted by increasing age. These findings show that the ESCoT is a useful measure of social cognition and, unlike established tests of social cognition, performance is not predicted by measures of verbal comprehension and perceptual reasoning. This is particularly valuable to obtain an accurate assessment of the influence of age on our social cognitive abilities.</p></div
