Testing goodwill: Conflict and co-operation in new product development networks

Network forms are often seen as models of organisational flexibility, promoting the building of trust and exchange of information between different business functions while offering both cost savings and reductions in the uncertainties usually associated with innovation. Both internal and external networks have been identified as key elements in the collaborative development of new products. The actual process of network building and ongoing network management is not well researched, although the existing literature highlights difficulties for organisations attempting to maintain active product development networks. This article examines the development and management of such a network in the defence industry and focuses on network building processes in terms of the interactions between the individuals involved. This network has endured and evolved over many years despite a series of conflicts. One of the key findings is that the effective functioning of the overall network is closely allied to established processes within the two participating firms

Generalised knot groups distinguish the square and granny knots (with an appendix by David Savitt)

Given a knot K we may construct a group G_n(K) from the fundamental group of K by adjoining an nth root of the meridian that commutes with the corresponding longitude. These "generalised knot groups" were introduced independently by Wada and Kelly, and contain the fundamental group as a subgroup. The square knot SK and the granny knot GK are a well known example of a pair of distinct knots with isomorphic fundamental groups. We show that G_n(SK) and G_n(GK) are non-isomorphic for all n>1. This confirms a conjecture of Lin and Nelson, and shows that the isomorphism type of G_n(K), n>1, carries more information about K than the isomorphism type of the fundamental group. Genetic Family and Stock Type Influence Simulated Loblolly Pine Yields from Wet Sites

Planting adapted families or a bulked seedlot of bare-root and container-grown-seedlings of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L) were contrasted as cost effective alternatives for regenerating Arkansas\u27 wet sites. Survival data from two wet sites were used to simulate 15 years of growth. Containerized seedlings provided 17% greater survival than bare-root seedlings, but yielded a lower present net worth than bare-root seedlings. Planting families adapted to excessive moisture provided 7% greater survival and yielded a greater present net worth than planting a bulked seedlot consisting of adapted and poorly adapted families

Declaratory Remedies and Constitutional Change

The Federal Declaratory Judgment Act\u27 has now been law for more than 36 years. The debates over whether a purely declaratory judgment can be the product of a justiciable controversy in the constitutional sense have long since passed away, set to rest by the language of the Act itself and by the Supreme Court\u27s decision that the Act was authorized by the judiciary article of the Constitution. The last edition of Professor Borchard\u27s great work, Declaratory Judgments, was published in 1941,and the most recent article analyzing the constitutional significance of the Act was published shortly before Chief Justice Warren took his place on the Court in October 1953. The present, therefore, is an appropriate time to review the developments in declaratory litigation since the beginning of the Warren Court

Like the number of earthquakes felt in Oklahoma, the number of media reports regarding large-magnitude earthquakes in Oklahoma has increased in recent years. News headlines that mention property damage and question who is responsible have sparked heated debated. In this document, a discussion is presented over the responsibility of engineers for the public’s safety in relation to earthquakes. Input from various groups is discussed, the action taken in Oklahoma is outlined, and ethical obligations presented by the American Society of Civil Engineers are considered. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported a major grievance against building-code committees, but many factors are at play in the organizational structure missing to ensure the public’s safety within an evolving world of induced seismicity.
