    Characterizing the contaminating distance distribution for Bayesian supernova cosmology

    Measurements of the equation of state of dark energy from surveys of thousands of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) will be limited by spectroscopic follow-up and must therefore rely on photometric identification, increasing the chance that the sample is contaminated by Core Collapse Supernovae (CC SNe). Bayesian methods for supernova cosmology can remove contamination bias while maintaining high statistical precision but are sensitive to the choice of parameterization of the contaminating distance distribution. We use simulations to investigate the form of the contaminating distribution and its dependence on the absolute magnitudes, light curve shapes, colors, extinction, and redshifts of core collapse supernovae. We find that the CC luminosity function dominates the distance distribution function, but its shape is increasingly distorted as the redshift increases and more CC SNe fall below the survey magnitude limit. The shapes and colors of the CC light curves generally shift the distance distribution, and their effect on the CC distances is correlated. We compare the simulated distances to the first year results of the SDSS-II SN survey and find that the SDSS distance distributions can be reproduced with simulated CC SNe that are ~1 mag fainter than the standard Richardson et al. (2002) luminosity functions, which do not produce a good fit. To exploit the full power of the Bayesian parameter estimation method, parameterization of the contaminating distribution should be guided by the current knowledge of the CC luminosity functions, coupled with the effects of the survey selection and magnitude-limit, and allow for systematic shifts caused by the parameters of the distance fit.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Finite elements and the discrete variable representation in nonequilibrium Green's function calculations. Atomic and molecular models

    In this contribution, we discuss the finite-element discrete variable representation (FE-DVR) of the nonequilibrium Green's function and its implications on the description of strongly inhomogeneous quantum systems. In detail, we show that the complementary features of FEs and the DVR allows for a notably more efficient solution of the two-time Schwinger/Keldysh/Kadanoff-Baym equations compared to a general basis approach. Particularly, the use of the FE-DVR leads to an essential speedup in computing the self-energies. As atomic and molecular examples we consider the He atom and the linear version of H3+_3^+ in one spatial dimension. For these closed-shell models we, in Hartree-Fock and second Born approximation, compute the ground-state properties and compare with the exact findings obtained from the solution of the few-particle time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, submitted as proceedings of conference "PNGF IV

    The evolution of the AGN content in groups up to z~1

    Determining the AGN content in structures of different mass/velocity dispersion and comparing them to higher mass/lower redshift analogs is important to understand how the AGN formation process is related to environmental properties. We use our well-tested cluster finding algorithm to identify structures in the GOODS North and South fields, exploiting the available spectroscopic redshifts and accurate photometric redshifts. We identify 9 structures in GOODS-south (presented in a previous paper) and 8 new structures in GOODS-north. We only consider structures where at least 2/3 of the members brighter than M_R=-20 have a spectroscopic redshift. For those group members that coincide with X-ray sources in the 4 and 2 Msec Chandra source catalogs respectively, we determine if the X-ray emission originates from AGN activity or it is related to the galaxies' star-formation activity. We find that the fraction of AGN with Log L_H > 42 erg/s in galaxies with M_R < -20 is on average 6.3+-1.3%, much higher than in lower redshift groups of similar mass and more than double the fraction found in massive clusters at a similarly high redshift. We then explore the spatial distribution of AGN in the structures and find that they preferentially populate the outer regions. The colors of AGN host galaxies in structures tend to be confined to the green valley, thus avoiding the blue cloud and, partially, also the red-sequence, contrary to what happens in the field. We finally compare our results to the predictions of two sets of semi analytic models to investigate the evolution of AGN and evaluate potential triggering and fueling mechanisms. The outcome of this comparison attests the importance of galaxy encounters, not necessarily leading to mergers, as an efficient AGN triggering mechanism.     Effects of a Vitamin and Mineral Bolus on Beef Heifer Feedlot Performance, Feeding Behavior, Carcass Characteristics, and Liver Mineral Concentrations

    Crossbred beef heifers (n = 23; initial body weight [BW] = 370 ± 12 kg) housed at the North Dakota State University Beef Cattle Research Complex in Fargo, North Dakota, were used to evaluate the effects of a 250-d slow-release vitamin and mineral bolus on feedlot performance, feeding behavior, carcass characteristics, and liver mineral concentrations. Heifers were assigned to one of two treatments: 1) received no supplemental mineral or vitamin (CON, n = 12 or 2) received two boluses on day 0 (minimum of 3,740 mg Ca, 16,456 mg Mg, 112 mg Na, 11,220 mg Cu, 2,995 mg I, 2,805 mg Mn, 505 mg Se, 48,620 mg Zn, 468 mg Co, 824,296 IU vitamin A, 173,102 IU vitamin D3, and 4,121 IU vitamin E bases on company analysis; Reloader 250 Mineral Bolus, Cargill Inc., Minneapolis, MN; MIN, n = 11). Heifers were fed a total mixed ration containing corn silage, grass hay, dried distillers grains with solubles, and dry-rolled corn (16.05% crude protein, 1.44 Mcal/kg NEg) with no added vitamin or mineral supplement. Feed intake and number and time of visits were recorded for each heifer using the Insentec feeding system (Hokofarm Group B.V., the Netherlands) during the feeding period. Liver biopsies were collected from heifers on days 0, 69, and 134 of the feeding period for analysis of mineral concentrations and analyzed as repeated measures. Heifers were slaughtered after 150 or 169 d on feed, and carcass characteristics were determined. Final BW, average daily gain, dry matter index, gain:feed, and carcass characteristics were not influenced (P \u3e 0.19) by treatment. Control heifers visited feeders more but spent less time per visit and ate less per visit compared with MIN heifers (P \u3c 0.03). No differences (P \u3e 0.06) in liver mineral concentrations were observed between treatments, and concentrations of Se, Cu, Mo, Mn, and Co decreased (P \u3c 0.05) over the feeding period. In this experiment, the slow-release vitamin and mineral bolus evaluated failed to increase liver mineral concentrations during the finishing period or influence heifer performance and carcass characteristics

    High Redshift Supernova Rates

    We use a sample of 42 supernovae detected with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on-board the Hubble Space Telescope as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey to measure the rate of core collapse supernovae to z~0.7 and type Ia supernovae to z~1.6. This significantly increases the redshift range where supernova rates have been estimated from observations. The rate of core collapse supernovae can be used as an independent probe of the cosmic star formation rate. Based on the observations of 17 core collapse supernovae, we measure an increase in the core collapse supernova rate by a factor of 1.6 in the range 0.3<z<0.7, and an overall increase by a factor of 7 to z~0.7 in comparison to the local core collapse supernova rate. The increase in the rate in this redshift range in consistent with recent measurements of the star formation rate derived from UV-luminosity densities and IR datasets. Based on 25 type Ia supernovae, we find a SN Ia rate that is a factor 3-5 higher at z~1 compared to earlier estimates at lower redshifts (z<0.5), implying that the type Ia supernova rate traces a higher star formation rate at redshifts z>1 compared to low redshift. At higher redshift (z>1), we find a suggested decrease in the type Ia rate with redshift. This evolution of the Ia rate with redshift is consistent with a type Ia progenitor model where there is a substantial delay between the formation of the progenitor star and the explosion of the supernova. Assuming that the type Ia progenitor stars have initial main sequence masses 3-8 M_Sun, we find that 5-7% of the available progenitors explode as type Ia supernovae.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    Utilizing an Electronic Feeder to Measure Individual Mineral Intake, Feeding Behavior, and Growth Performance of Cow–Calf Pairs Grazing Native Range

    Crossbred Angus cow–calf pairs (n = 28 pairs) at the Central Grasslands Research Extension Center (Streeter, North Dakota) were used to evaluate an electronic feeder to monitor individual mineral intake and feeding behavior and their relationship with growth performance and liver mineral concentrations. Cows and calves were fitted with radio frequency identification ear tags that allowed access to an electronic feeder (SmartFeed system; C-Lock Inc., Rapid City, South Dakota) and were provided ad libitum minerals (Purina Wind and Rain Storm, Land O’Lakes, Inc., Arden Hills, MN). Mineral intake, number of visits, and duration at the feeder were recorded over a 95-d monitoring period while pairs were grazing native range. Liver biopsies were collected from a subset of cows on the final day of monitoring and analyzed for mineral concentrations. Data were analyzed with the GLM procedure in SAS for mineral intake and feeding behavior with age class (cows vs. calves), intake category (high vs. low), and the interaction between class and category in the model. Correlations were calculated among cow feeding behavior and calf intake and growth performance with the CORR procedure, and a comparison of liver mineral concentrations among cows of high (\u3e90 g/d; average 125.4 g/d) and low (/d; average 33.5 g/d) mineral intake was performed using the GLM procedure. High-intake calves (\u3e50 g/d; average 72.2 g/d) consumed greater (P \u3c 0.001) amounts of minerals than low-intake calves

    Blunt cones in rarefied hypersonic flow: Experiments and Monte-Carlo simulations

    The drag coefficients for cones with hot and cold walls and different bluntness ratios have been found experimentally. There is a small wall temperature effect which can be accounted for by the change in the pressure drag that occurs in the free molecular limiting flow. The results from the Monte-Carlo calculations agree well with the experiments and they show that the flow field is characterised by the free molecular behaviour at least as far as Knudsen = 0.02 (based on bade diameter) and that the shear drag is the predominant force. From the experimental results it seems reasonable to conclude that the flow fields are characterised by the free molecular behaviour down to the lowest value of Knudsen number tested, which was 0.006. The nose bluntness effect on the measured drag can be correlated by normalising the coefficient by the value in the free molecular limit and by defining a Knudsen number based on the cone lengt

    Expectations of the upcoming birth : a survey of women's self-efficacy and birth positions

    Background: Adopting an upright sacrum flexible position may facilitate physiological childbirth, which many pregnant women wish for. A positive association between women's choice on birthing position and birthing experience has been found. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine women's preferred birth position, self-efficacy at term and their actual birth position at time of birth. Methods: A survey of 554 pregnant Danish women at gestational week 38. Data was collected using an online survey and information was retracted from the woman's medical record. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests were used and univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to analyse the association between self-efficacy and fulfilled wish of birth position. Findings: The majority of women (>70 %) wished to give birth in a sacrum flexible position but more than 80 % gave birth in a non-flexible position. Less than 50 % had their wish of birth position fulfilled. All women reported overall high self-efficacy. No difference in having wish for birth position fulfilled was found comparing women with high and low self-efficacy. Conclusions: Most women wished for a sacrum flexible position but more than 80% gave birth in a sacrum non-flexible position and less than 50% had their wish for birth position fulfilled. Level of self-efficacy did not affect the likelihood of having wish of birth position fulfilled indicating that the culture at the birth setting and skills and attitudes among birth providers may have a considerable impact on women's choice of birth position

    Levels of self-consistency in the GW approximation

    We perform GWGW calculations on atoms and diatomic molecules at different levels of self-consistency and investigate the effects of self-consistency on total energies, ionization potentials and on particle number conservation. We further propose a partially self-consistent GWGW scheme in which we keep the correlation part of the self-energy fixed within the self-consistency cycle. This approximation is compared to the fully self-consistent GWGW results and to the GW0G W_0 and the G0W0G_0W_0 approximations. Total energies, ionization potentials and two-electron removal energies obtained with our partially self-consistent GWGW approximation are in excellent agreement with fully self-consistent GWGW results while requiring only a fraction of the computational effort. We also find that self-consistent and partially self-consistent schemes provide ionization energies of similar quality as the G0W0G_0W_0 values but yield better total energies and energy differences.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 3 table

    Kadanoff-Baym approach to time-dependent quantum transport in AC and DC fields

    We have developed a method based on the embedded Kadanoff-Baym equations to study the time evolution of open and inhomogeneous systems. The equation of motion for the Green's function on the Keldysh contour is solved using different conserving many-body approximations for the self-energy. Our formulation incorporates basic conservation laws, such as particle conservation, and includes both initial correlations and initial embedding effects, without restrictions on the time-dependence of the external driving field. We present results for the time-dependent density, current and dipole moment for a correlated tight binding chain connected to one-dimensional non-interacting leads exposed to DC and AC biases of various forms. We find that the self-consistent 2B and GW approximations are in extremely good agreement with each other at all times, for the long-range interactions that we consider. In the DC case we show that the oscillations in the transients can be understood from interchain and lead-chain transitions in the system and find that the dominant frequency corresponds to the HOMO-LUMO transition of the central wire. For AC biases with odd inversion symmetry odd harmonics to high harmonic order in the driving frequency are observed in the dipole moment, whereas for asymmetric applied bias also even harmonics have considerable intensity. In both cases we find that the HOMO-LUMO transition strongly mixes with the harmonics leading to harmonic peaks with enhanced intensity at the HOMO-LUMO transition energy.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures.
