Education Vouchers: Virtue or Vice?
The school choice debate is very visible in today\u27s discussions of public education. One approach\u27to change is through the use of vouchers. Vouchers allow parents to consider more than the neighborhood or assigned school.
The voucher system is an issue because of problems with the status quo in public education. A solution would not be offered unless there was a problem. Identification of the reasons behind the proposition of an alternative such as a voucher is presented in this paper. A thorough definition of a voucher system is necessary to establish a firm foundation upon which one can base an opinion. For this reason, a complete definition has been provided for the reader. This paper explains exactly what a voucher system entails.
Throughout history, many different voucher plans have surfaced. The idea continues to re-surface as an alternative to the present educational establishment. Several voucher proposals are described in this paper in order to present a historical perspective of voucher programs.
The opposing viewpoints of the voucher issue were researched. Voucher advocates have many strong arguments for its implementation. Voucher opposition is as strong as voucher support. Reasons for both support and opposition to vouchers are presented in this paper.
The results of a voucher program already in use is fundamental in the formation of an opinion on the validity of the issue. In 1990, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, implemented a choice plan. The researcher obtained a report from the State of Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction that presents results of the implementation.

Mortality, Mortuaries, and Movement - Implications of Dance/Movement Therapy and Death: a Literature Review
Dance/movement therapy (DMT) is a somatic-based psychotherapy approach that can supplement existing therapy techniques or stand on its own as effective psychological treatment. As a growing field, DMT continues to expand its application to different populations. This literature review analyzed the implications of DMT application for individuals who are dying. While the application of DMT with diverse populations has been studied, the literature regarding the application of DMT with dying individuals is slim. Medical, spiritual, and emotional treatment during death have received considerable attention in academic literature, however, the application of many body-based psychological treatment interventions has not been studied as thoroughly. Literature concerning the cultural attitudes towards death in Western and non-Western cultures, mental illness and death, and the literature that has been published thus far concerning DMT and death were analyzed as a framework to better understand the potential application of DMT with dying individuals. While research still needs to be conducted in order to best apply DMT in the treatment of dying individuals, the research points to strong potential for the creation of further evidence-based care
DIRBE External Calibrator (DEC)
Under NASA Contract No. NAS5-28185, the Center for Space Engineering at Utah State University has produced a calibration instrument for the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE). DIRBE is one of the instruments aboard the Cosmic Background Experiment Observatory (COBE). The calibration instrument is referred to as the DEC (Dirbe External Calibrator). DEC produces a steerable, infrared beam of controlled spectral content and intensity and with selectable point source or diffuse source characteristics, that can be directed into the DIRBE to map fields and determine response characteristics. Patients with ALS show highly correlated progression rates in left and right limb muscles.
ObjectiveAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) progresses at different rates between patients, making clinical trial design difficult and dependent on large cohorts of patients. Currently, there are few data showing whether the left and right limbs progress at the same or different rates. This study addresses rates of decline in specific muscle groups of patients with ALS and assesses whether there is a relationship between left and right muscles in the same patient, regardless of overall progression.MethodsA large cohort of patients was used to assess decline in muscle strength in right and left limbs over time using 2 different methods: The Tufts Quantitative Neuromuscular Exam and Accurate Test of Limb Isometric Strength protocol. Then advanced linear regression statistical methods were applied to assess progression rates in each limb.ResultsThis report shows that linearized progression models can predict general slopes of decline with good accuracy. Critically, the data demonstrate that while overall decline is variable, there is a high degree of correlation between left and right muscle decline in ALS. This implies that irrespective of which muscle starts declining soonest or latest, their rates of decline following onset are more consistent.ConclusionsFirst, this study demonstrates a high degree of power when using unilateral treatment approaches to detect a slowing in disease progression in smaller groups of patients, thus allowing for paired statistical tests. These findings will be useful in transplantation trials that use muscle decline to track disease progression in ALS. Second, these findings discuss methods, such as tactical selection of muscle groups, which can improve the power efficiency of all ALS clinical trials
Enantioselective Total Synthesis of Macfarlandin C, a Spongian Diterpenoid Harboring a Concave-Substituted cis-Dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octanone Fragment.
The enantioselective total synthesis of the rearranged spongian diterpenoid (-)-macfarlandin C is reported. This is the first synthesis of a rearranged spongian diterpenoid in which the bulky hydrocarbon fragment is joined via a quaternary carbon to the highly hindered concave face of the cis-2,8-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octan-3-one moiety. The strategy involves a late-stage fragment coupling between a tertiary carbon radical and an electrophilic butenolide resulting in the stereoselective formation of vicinal quaternary and tertiary stereocenters. A stereoselective Mukaiyama hydration that orients a pendant carboxymethyl side chain cis to the bulky octahydronapthalene substituent was pivotal in fashioning the challenging concave-substituted cis-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octanone fragment
Numerical simulations of chromospheric hard X-ray source sizes in solar flares
X-ray observations are a powerful diagnostic tool for transport,
acceleration, and heating of electrons in solar flares. Height and size
measurements of X-ray footpoints sources can be used to determine the
chromospheric density and constrain the parameters of magnetic field
convergence and electron pitch-angle evolution. We investigate the influence of
the chromospheric density, magnetic mirroring and collisional pitch-angle
scattering on the size of X-ray sources. The time-independent Fokker-Planck
equation for electron transport is solved numerically and analytically to find
the electron distribution as a function of height above the photosphere. From
this distribution, the expected X-ray flux as a function of height, its peak
height and full width at half maximum are calculated and compared with RHESSI
observations. A purely instrumental explanation for the observed source size
was ruled out by using simulated RHESSI images. We find that magnetic mirroring
and collisional pitch-angle scattering tend to change the electron flux such
that electrons are stopped higher in the atmosphere compared with the simple
case with collisional energy loss only. However, the resulting X-ray flux is
dominated by the density structure in the chromosphere and only marginal
increases in source width are found. Very high loop densities (>10^{11}
cm^{-3}) could explain the observed sizes at higher energies, but are
unrealistic and would result in no footpoint emission below about 40 keV,
contrary to observations. We conclude that within a monolithic density model
the vertical sizes are given mostly by the density scale-height and are

Living apart together (LAT) relationships are an emerging relationship form typically defined as unmarried couples in a committed, long-term relationship who choose to live apart (maintain separate residences) rather than cohabit or marry (Connidis, et al., 2017). Other researchers have classified married couples who live separately as LATs, as well (Binstock & Thornton, 2004). This profile examines the LAT status of newly married individuals who report having entered a marriage in the last year. We define newlywed LATs as those not living with their spouse for reasons other than marital discord1. Approaches to Promote Active, Conceptual Learning in a Pedagogically Hybrid Introductory Statistics Course
Statistics education is an active area of research where discovery-based learning is becoming more prominent. This project reviews how the USEI and GAISE recommendations can be implemented in the statistics classroom. Further, the project describes the creation of a library of classroom materials for an introductory statistics course. The results are also discussed from implementing various library materials, along with the student response to hands-on learning techniques
