Study of aircraft in intraurban transportation systems, volume 1
An analysis of an effective short range, high density computer transportation system for intraurban systems is presented. The seven county Detroit, Michigan, metropolitan area, was chosen as the scenario for the analysis. The study consisted of an analysis and forecast of the Detroit market through 1985, a parametric analysis of appropriate short haul aircraft concepts and associated ground systems, and a preliminary overall economic analysis of a simplified total system designed to evaluate the candidate vehicles and select the most promising VTOL and STOL aircraft. Data are also included on the impact of advanced technology on the system, the sensitivity of mission performance to changes in aircraft characteristics and system operations, and identification of key problem areas that may be improved by additional research. The approach, logic, and computer models used are adaptable to other intraurban or interurban areas

Violence in a relationship and in a family setting has been
an issue of concern to various interest groups and professional organizations.
Of particular interest in this article is violence against women
in a relationship. While there is an abundance of knowledge on violence
against women in general, intimate or partner femicide seems to have
received less attention. Unfortunately, the incidence of violence against
women, and intimate femicide in particular, has been an issue of concern
in the African setting.
This article examines the trends of intimate femicide in an African setting
in general, and in Botswana in particular. The increase in intimate
femicide is an issue of concern, which calls for collective effort to address.
This article also examines trends offemicide in Botswana, and the
antecedents and the precipitating factors. Some studies have implicated
societal and cultural dynamics as playing significant roles in intimate
femicide in the African setting. It is believed that the patriarchal nature
of most African settings and the ideology of male supremacy have relegated
women to a subordinate role. Consequently, respect for women
in any relationship with men is lopsided in favor of men and has led to
abuse of women, including intimate femicide. Other militating factors in
intimate femicide ,are examined and the implications for counseling to
assist the endangered female partner are discussed

Let D be a convex domain with smooth boundary in complex space and let f be a
continuous function on the boundary of D. Suppose that f holomorphically
extends to the extremal discs tangent to a convex subdomain of D. We prove that
f holomorphically extends to D. The result partially answers a conjecture by
Globevnik and Stout of 1991
Transduction of a dominant-negative H-Ras into human eosinophils attenuates extracellular signal-regulated kinase activation and interleukin-5-mediated cell viability
Inhibition of eosinophil apoptosis by exposure
to interleukin-5 (IL-5) is associated
with the development of tissue eosinophilia
and may contribute to the
inflammation characteristic of asthma.
Analysis of the signaling events associated
with this process has been hampered
by the inability to efficiently manipulate
eosinophils by the introduction of
active or inhibitory effector molecules.
Evidence is provided, using a dominantnegative
N17 H-Ras protein (dn-H-Ras)
and MEK inhibitor U0126, that activation
of the Ras-Raf-MEK-ERK pathway plays a
determining role in the prolongation of
eosinophil survival by IL-5. For these
studies, a small region of the human
immunodeficiency virus Tat protein, a protein
transduction domain known to enter
mammalian cells efficiently, was fused to
the N-terminus of dn-H-Ras. The Tat-dn-HRas
protein generated from this construct
transduced isolated human blood
eosinophils at more than 95% efficiency.
When Tat-dn-H-Ras-transduced eosinophils
were treated with IL-5, they exhibited
a time- and dosage-dependent reduction
in extracellular regulated kinase 1
and 2 activation and an inhibition of p90
Rsk1 phosphorylation and IL-5-mediated
eosinophil survival in vitro. In contrast,
Tat-dn-H-Ras did not inhibit CD11b upregulation
or STAT5 tyrosine phosphorylation.
These data demonstrate that Tat
dominant-negative protein transduction
can serve as an important and novel tool
in studying primary myeloid cell signal
transduction in primary leukocytes and
can implicate the Ras-Raf-MEK-ERK pathway
in IL-5-initiated eosinophil survival
Gas emissions, minerals, and tars associated with three coal fires, Powder River Basin, USA.
Ground-based surveys of three coal fires and airborne surveys of two of the fires were conducted near Sheridan, Wyoming. The fires occur in natural outcrops and in abandoned mines, all containing Paleocene-age subbituminous coals. Diffuse (carbon dioxide (CO(2)) only) and vent (CO(2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane, hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), and elemental mercury) emission estimates were made for each of the fires. Additionally, gas samples were collected for volatile organic compound (VOC) analysis and showed a large range in variation between vents. The fires produce locally dangerous levels of CO, CO(2), H(2)S, and benzene, among other gases. At one fire in an abandoned coal mine, trends in gas and tar composition followed a change in topography. Total CO(2) fluxes for the fires from airborne, ground-based, and rate of fire advancement estimates ranged from 0.9 to 780mg/s/m(2) and are comparable to other coal fires worldwide. Samples of tar and coal-fire minerals collected from the mouth of vents provided insight into the behavior and formation of the coal fires
Intelligent sampling for the measurement of structured surfaces
Uniform sampling in metrology has known drawbacks such as coherent spectral aliasing and a lack of efficiency in terms of measuring time and data storage. The requirement for intelligent sampling strategies has been outlined over recent years, particularly where the measurement of structured surfaces is concerned. Most of the present research on intelligent sampling has focused on dimensional metrology using coordinate-measuring machines with little reported on the area of surface metrology. In the research reported here, potential intelligent sampling strategies for surface topography measurement of structured surfaces are investigated by using numerical simulation and experimental verification. The methods include the jittered uniform method, low-discrepancy pattern sampling and several adaptive methods which originate from computer graphics, coordinate metrology and previous research by the authors. By combining the use of advanced reconstruction methods and feature-based characterization techniques, the measurement performance of the sampling methods is studied using case studies. The advantages, stability and feasibility of these techniques for practical measurements are discussed
