    State-of-the-art integration of decentralized energy management systems into the German smart meter gateway infrastructure

    The German Smart Meter Gateway (SMGW) infrastructure enables digital access to metering data and distributed energy resources by external parties. There are, however, various restrictions in order to guarantee the privacy of consumers, and strong security requirements. Furthermore, in the current state of development, there are still several challenges to overcome in order to implement demand side management (DSM) measures. In this paper, we present a prototype enabling DSM measures within the SMGW infrastructure, using the smart grid traffic light concept. The prototype implements an automated decentralized energy management system (EMS) that optimally controls an electric vehicle charging station. In the development of this prototype, we did not only evaluate five of the seven available SMGW devices, but also push the limits of the infrastructure itself. The experiments demonstrated the successful implementation of the intended DSM measure by the EMS. Even though there are technical guidelines standardizing the functionality of SMGWs, our evaluation shows that there are substantial differences between the individual SMGW devices

    Dry bone and virtual modality interchangeability for the estimation of sex on the human pelvis and skull

    Background: Traditional osteological methods are typically based on visual and tactile observational approaches. However, the tactile sensation is excluded when investigating skeletal remains in virtual reality. This raises the question of the actual comparability of data obtained from osteological analysis on analogous versus virtual modality. The aim of this work is to address this topic and quantify the deviation between the scoring on dry bone and virtual models of sexually dimorphic features on the human pelvis and skull. Materials and methods: We applied seven widely used sex estimation methods to 200 archaeological pelves and 223 skulls. We scored and measured each method-specific trait on dry bone and computed tomographic (CT) models of the same individual. We added observations on 3D surface scans from sample subsets of pelves (N=39) and skulls (=50) for comparability. We compared the scores and measurements obtained from the application of each method to the three sets of observations using Cohen's κ tests and relative technical error of measurement (rTEM). Results: 1) metric traits are more repeatable and consistent than nonmetric traits; b) virtual modalities compared better to each other than visual-tactile modalities and c) precise trait descriptions are more important than the modality. Discussion: Our data suggest that traditional sex estimation methods developed on dry bone (visual-tactile sensations) can be applied interchangeably to virtual specimens (visual-only sensation) without obtaining substantially different information. More than other factors, however, precise trait definition is pivotal for the interchangeability of analogous and virtual modalities

    Smart Meter Gateways: Options for a BSI-compliant integration of energy management systems

    The introduction of Smart Meter Gateways (SMGWs) to buildings and households creates new opportunities and challenges for energy management systems. While SMGWs provide interfaces for accessing recorded information and enable communication to external parties, they also restrict data access to protect the privacy of inhabitants and facility owners. This paper presents an analysis of options for integrating automated (Building) Energy Management Systems (EMSs) into the smart meter architecture based on the technical guidelines for SMGWs by the German Federal Office for Information Security (“Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik”, BSI). It shows that there are multiple ways for integrating automated EMSs into the German smart metering architecture, although each option comes with its own advantages and restrictions. By providing a detailed discussion of trade-offs, this paper supports EMS designers that will be confronted with differing freedoms and limitations depending on the integration option

    Shopping centre siting and modal choice in Belgium: a destination based analysis

    Although modal split is only one of the elements considered in decision-making on new shopping malls, it remarkably often arises in arguments of both proponents and opponents. Today, this is also the case in the debate on the planned development of three major shopping malls in Belgium. Inspired by such debates, the present study focuses on the impact of the location of shopping centres on the travel mode choice of the customers. Our hypothesis is that destination-based variables such as embeddedness in the urban fabric, accessibility and mall size influence the travel mode choice of the visitors. Based on modal split data and location characteristics of seventeen existing shopping centres in Belgium, we develop a model for a more sustainable siting policy. The results show a major influence of the location of the shopping centre in relation to the urban form, and of the size of the mall. Shopping centres that are part of a dense urban fabric, measured through population density, are less car dependent. Smaller sites will attract more cyclists and pedestrians. Interestingly, our results deviate significantly from the figures that have been put forward in public debates on the shopping mall issue in Belgium

    The application of different 3D-scan-systems and photogrammetry at an excavation — A Neolithic dolmen from Switzerland

    The discovery of a Neolithic dolmen in Switzerland with inhumations, dating between 3500 and 3000 BCE, was an exceptional finding. To provide best conditions for subsequent studies on the archaeological remains our interdisciplinary team decided to apply 3D documentation. Depending on different factors, two scanning systems with four scanners and photogrammetry were applied and the obtained data was combined. Detailed excavation plans and simultaneously a reduction of excavation time without loss of information were the result. A virtual animation of the dolmen in its reconstructed ancient appearance combined with the context of the grave goods was created. The 3D documentation provided initial data for anthropological and paleogenetic analyses. The individuals buried in the dolmen might provide novel information to the Neolithic research of central Europe. Additionally, with the help of the 3D data, the dolmen was rebuilt to make this archaeological heritage accessible to the public

    Mutation detection analysis of a region of 16S-like ribosomal RNA gene of Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar and Entamoeba moshkovskii

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The level of intra-species genetic variation in <it>Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar </it>and <it>Entamoeba moshkovskii </it>populations in a localized geographic area, like Puducherry, India, remains unknown.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the present study the existence of genetic variation in the nested multiplex polymerase chain reaction (NM-PCR) amplified region of the 16S-like ribosomal RNA genes of <it>E. histolytica, E. dispar </it>and <it>E. moshkovskii </it>was investigated by riboprinting and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that 70 stool specimens were positive for <it>E. histolytica</it>, 171 stool specimens were positive for <it>E. dispar</it>, and 37 stool specimens were positive for <it>E. moshkovskii </it>by NM-PCR. Ninety liver abscess pus specimens, 21 urine specimens, and 8 saliva specimens were positive for <it>E. histolytica </it>by NM-PCR. Riboprinting analysis detected a mutation in the PCR product of only one <it>E. histolytica </it>isolate from a stool specimen. However, SSCP analysis detected mutations in the PCR products of five <it>E. histolytica </it>isolates and three <it>E. moshkovskii </it>isolates from stool specimens, and one <it>E. histolytica </it>isolate from a saliva specimen. The mutations detected by riboprinting and SSCP analysis were confirmed by sequencing. All the nucleotide sequences showing mutations in this study have already been deposited into the NCBI GenBank database under accession numbers [GenBank: <ext-link ext-link-type="gen" ext-link-id="EF682200">EF682200</ext-link> to GenBank: <ext-link ext-link-type="gen" ext-link-id="EF682208">EF682208</ext-link>].</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present study has revealed the subsistence of mutations in the ribosomal RNA genes of <it>E. histolytica </it>and <it>E. moshkovskii</it>, which points towards the existence of intra-species genetic variation in <it>E. histolytica </it>and <it>E. moshkovskii </it>isolates infecting humans.</p

    Automated Non-Sterile Pharmacy Compounding: A Multi-Site Study in European Hospital and Community Pharmacies with Pediatric Immediate Release Propranolol Hydrochloride Tablets.

    Pharmacy compounding, the art and science of preparing customized medications to meet individual patient needs, is on the verge of transformation. Traditional methods of compounding often involve manual and time-consuming processes, presenting challenges in terms of consistency, dosage accuracy, quality control, contamination, and scalability. However, the emergence of cutting-edge technologies has paved a way for a new era for pharmacy compounding, promising to redefine the way medications are prepared and delivered as pharmacy-tailored personalized medicines. In this multi-site study, more than 30 hospitals and community pharmacies from eight countries in Europe utilized a novel automated dosing approach inspired by 3D printing for the compounding of non-sterile propranolol hydrochloride tablets. CuraBlend &lt;sup&gt;®&lt;/sup&gt; excipient base, a GMP-manufactured excipient base (pharma-ink) intended for automated compounding applications, was used. A standardized study protocol to test the automated dosing of tablets with variable weights was performed in all participating pharmacies in four different iterative phases. Integrated quality control was performed with an in-process scale and NIR spectroscopy supported by HPLC content uniformity measurements. In total, 6088 propranolol tablets were produced at different locations during this study. It was shown that the dosing accuracy of the process increased from about 90% to 100% from Phase 1 to Phase 4 by making improvements to the formulation and the hardware solutions. The results indicate that through this automated and quality controlled compounding approach, extemporaneous pharmacy manufacturing can take a giant leap forward towards automation and digital manufacture of dosage forms in hospital pharmacies and compounding pharmacies

    Prevalencia de bacterias enteropatógenas en niños que asisten a un hospital pediátrico en Resistencia, Chaco, Argentina

    La enfermedad diarreica aguda continúa siendo uno de los problemas de salud pública más serios en los países en desarrollo, en los que constituye una de las causas principales de enfermedad y muerte en los niños menores de 5 años. Su epidemiología es totalmente dependiente de la región geográfica, nivel socio económico, costumbres y hábitos de la población. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar la prevalencia de agentes etiológicos bacterianos causantes de diarrea aguda, en niños atendidos en un Hospital Pediátrico de Resistencia, Chaco, en el año 2013. Se investigó la presencia de Shigella spp., Salmonella spp., Campylobacte rspp., Escherichia coli O157:H7 en muestras de materia fecal de niños con enfermedad diarreica aguda. Sobre 823 muestras de materia fecal analizadas en el período mencionado, 93 resultaron positivas para alguno de los enteropatógenos estudiados (Tasa de recuperación del 11,3%). Las frecuencias de aislamiento de los enteropatógenos fueron: Shigella spp (82,8%), Salmonella spp (9,7%), Campylobacter spp (6,5%), y E. coli O157:H7 (1%). Con respecto a las especies, dentro del género Shigella predominó S. flexneri (60/77) seguida de S. sonnei (13/77) y S. boydii (4/77). Con excepción de E. coli O157, en el presente trabajo no se estudiaron los diferentes tipos patogénicos. Como en el resto del país, S. flexneri continúa siendo el agente etiológico más frecuentemente aislado. Este es el primer informe sobre la presencia de Campylobacter en coprocultivos en la provincia del Chaco.

    Semantics-based information extraction for detecting economic events

    As today's financial markets are sensitive to breaking news on economic events, accurate and timely automatic identification of events in news items is crucial. Unstructured news items originating from many heterogeneous sources have to be mined in order to extract knowledge useful for guiding decision making processes. Hence, we propose the Semantics-Based Pipeline for Economic Event Detection (SPEED), focusing on extracting financial events from news articles and annotating these with meta-data at a speed that enables real-time use. In our implementation, we use some components of an existing framework as well as new components, e.g., a high-performance Ontology Gazetteer, a Word Group Look-Up component, a Word Sense Disambiguator, and components for detecting economic events. Through their interaction with a domain-specific ontology, our novel, semantically enabled components constitute a feedback loop which fosters future reuse of acquired knowledge in the event detection process
