3 mol% yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline (3YTZP) ceramic composites with 2.5, 5 and 10 vol% graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) were pressureless sintered in argon atmosphere between 1350 and 1450 °C. The effects of the GNP content and the sintering temperature on the densification, microstructure and electrical properties of the composites were investigated. An isotropic distribution of GNP surrounding ceramic regions was exhibited regardless the GNP content and sintering temperature used. Electrical conductivity values comparable to the ones of fully dense composites prepared by more complex techniques were obtained, even though full densification was not achieved. While the composite with 5 vol% GNP exhibited electrical anisotropy with a semiconductor-type behaviour, the composite with 10 vol% GNP showed an electrically isotropic metallic-type behaviour.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad MAT2015-67889-

Spanish validation of the Aberrant Salience Inventory in a general adolescent population

Background: Aberrant salience (AS), related to classical delusional mood and self-disturbances, may be one of the keys to early detection of psychosis, before abnormal assignment of significance. As adolescence is a critical period in development of the self and there are few instruments for evaluating AS, validation of the Aberrant Salient Inventory (ASI) is proposed for use in the general adolescent population. Methods: A sample of 4,523 participants, 53.6% women, from 11 to 18 years of age (M = 14.31, SD = 1.66), from 29 schools in Western Andalusia (Spain) were evaluated collectively. Results: Good fit was found in the answers, and the original five-factor structure of the inventory was replicated. Reliability (ordinal alpha) was adequate both for the total (.95) and for the factors (.74. to .85). Invariance across sex, adequate indicators of concurrent (ideas of reference) and divergent (negative symptoms) validity, and sensitivity of .88 were found. Conclusions: The results suggest the ASI for use in the general adolescent population, and show that 7% of the sample could be at risk of beginning psychosis

Significance of cell adhesion molecules profile during pregnancy in gestational diabetes mellitus. A systematic review and meta-analysis

Endothelial dysfunction has been considered as a key etiological factor contributed to the development of vascular disease in diabetes mellitus. Serum level of endothelial cell adhesion molecules (AMs) were reported to be increased in GDM and pregnant women with normal glucose tolerance when compared with nonpregnant women. The literature provides limited evidence of endothelial dysfunction in GDM with heterogeneous and contradictory results respect to their possible involvement in maternal, perinatal and future complications. Our objective is to evaluate current evidence on the role of AMs in maternal and perinatal complications in women with GDM. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched. We evaluated the studies’ quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Meta-analyses were conducted, and heterogeneity and publication bias were examined. Nineteen relevant studies were finally included, recruiting 765 GDM and 2368 control pregnant women. AMs levels were generally higher in GDM participants showing statistical significance maternal ICAM-1 levels (SMD = 0.58, 95% CI = 0.25 to 0.91; p = 0.001). Our meta-analysis did not detect significant differences in subgroups or in meta-regression analyses. Future studies are needed to establish the potential role of these biomarkers in GDM and its complications

Interpersonal Violence and Psychotic-Like Experiences: The Mediation of Ideas of Reference, Childhood Memories, and Dissociation

Previous studies have demonstrated the relationship between the accumulation of situations involving interpersonal violence (IV) and psychotic-like experiences. This study explored whether IV is related to aberrant salience (AS), using a sequential mediation model that included memories of relationship with parents (submission, devaluation, and threat; Early Life Experiences Scale (ELES)), ideas of reference (IR), and dissociative symptoms (absorption and depersonalization), and whether the patient/nonpatient condition moderated this effect. The sample was made of 401 participants (including 43 patients with psychotic disorders) aged 18 to 71 years (Mage = 30.43;SD= 11.19). Analysis of a serial multiple mediator model revealed that IR, ELES, absorption, and depersonalization fully mediated the effect of IV on AS, explaining 39% of the variance, regardless of the patient/nonpatient condition. The indirect paths, which place IR and dissociation (especially absorption, the variable to which the IR and ELES lead) in a primordial position for being related to AS, are discussed. This continuum model could be useful for understanding processes related to the onset of psychosis unmoderated by the patient/nonpatient condition

Treatment of Interface Fluid Syndrome after Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis with Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty in Three Patients with Corneal Endothelial Dysfunction

Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) has become a first-line treatment in corneal endothelial diseases owing to its exceptional clinical outcomes and low complication rates. Thanks to its refractive predictability and the ability to reshape the superficial cornea, DMEK is now also considered for managing cases with endothelial decompensation following previous refractive procedures. This article reviews the clinical outcomes of DMEK in three patients with Interface Fluid Syndrome (IFS), a complication of laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in which endothelial failure can play a major role

The antimicrobial activity of two packaging films (polypropylene –PP- and polyethylene terephthalate –PET-) coated with different concentrations (0, 4, 6 and 8%) of essential oil from Origanum vulgare (OR) and Ethyl Lauroyl Arginate HCl (LAE) was tested against two E. coli O157:H7 strains using in vitro systems and a raw milk sheep cheese model (Zamorano). The influence of the antimicrobials on the sensory attributes of cheese was also evaluated. For both strains, the MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) values were identical to their respective MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values and lower for LAE (25 mg/l) than for OR (200-400 mg/l). PP and PET films coated with OR were tested by a vapour phase assay and the Japanish Standard method (JIS Z 2801:2000). Both films coated with LAE were tested by an agar diffusion method. Overall, in vitro tests were effective against both strains. The inhibitory activity depended on the active compound concentration, the target strain and the packaging material, PET being more effective than PP. For inoculated cheese slices, OR and LAE PP films did not effectively decrease E. coli O157:H7 counts after 7-days cold storage. PET films incorporating 6 and 8 % of OR and LAE significantly (p 0.05) affect sensorial characteristics of Zamorano cheese. Packaging with PET films coated with 6% LAE concentrations might be useful in reducing E. coli O157:H7 numbers in sheep chees
