    Gender Differences in the Association between Physical Inactivity and Mental-Health Conditions in People with Vision or Hearing Impairment; 35328994

    This study aimed to examine associations between physical inactivity and mental health in Spanish adults with vision or hearing difficulties and explored differences between men and women. Data from the Spanish National Health Survey in 2017 were analyzed (n = 23, 089 adults, 15–103 years, mean age 53.4 ± 18.9 years, 45.9% men). Physical inactivity (exposure) was evaluated with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form. Participants self-reported whether they had previously suffered from depression, chronic anxiety and other mental-health complications (outcomes). Associations between physical inactivity and mental-health complications were assessed with multivariable logistic regression in people with difficulty seeing and hearing, after grouping by gender and adjusting for age, body-mass index, education level, living as a couple, smoking and alcohol consumption. The overall multivariable logistic-regression analyses showed that women with vision impairment showed significant associations between physical inactivity and depression (OR 1.403, 95% CI 1.015–1.940) and other mental-health complications (OR 2.959, 95% CI 1.434–6.104). In the overall analyses, there were no significant associations in men and in people with hearing impairment. The age-stratified analyses showed that inactive people with visual impairment who were <65 years old had a higher risk of mental-health conditions. In conclusion, physical activity has been shown to be important in the prevention of mental-health complications. Healthcare practitioners and policy makers should look at appropriate strategies to increase levels of physical activity in people with vision loss, especially in women and in those <65 years old. © 2022 by the authors.     Recent Advances in Chromospheric and Coronal Polarization Diagnostics

    I review some recent advances in methods to diagnose polarized radiation with which we may hope to explore the magnetism of the solar chromosphere and corona. These methods are based on the remarkable signatures that the radiatively induced quantum coherences produce in the emergent spectral line polarization and on the joint action of the Hanle and Zeeman effects.     Self-reported sickness absence and presenteeism as predictors of future disability pension: Cohort study with 11-year register follow-up

    Many healthcare workers in eldercare are pushed out of the labor market before the official retirement age due to poor health. Identification of early warnings signs is important to avoid complete loss of work ability. The aim of this study was to investigate to what degree sickness absence and presenteeism increase future risk for disability pension among eldercare workers. A total of 8952 Danish female eldercare workers responded to a survey about work environment and health. They were followed for 11 years in the Danish Register for Evaluation of Marginalization, with time-to-event analyses estimating the hazard ratios (HRs) for disability pension from sickness absence and presenteeism at baseline. Analyses were adjusted for age, education, body mass index, leisure-time physical activity, smoking, physical exertion at work, and psychosocial factors related to the work environment. During the 11-year follow-up, 11.9% participants received disability pension. For the whole cohort, the highest risk for disability pension was observed for the category of >30 days of combined sickness absence and presenteeism at baseline in the fully adjusted model (HR = 7.93 [95%CI 5.20–12.09]). Eldercare workers aged >45 years were at a higher risk for disability pension in all included categories. Sickness absence and presenteeism increased the risk of disability pension among female eldercare workers. These results suggest that organizations would benefit from identifying early warning signs among workers in the prevention of involuntary early retirement. © 2021 Elsevier Inc

    Anomalous circular polarization profiles in the He I 1083.0 nm multiplet from solar spicules

    We report Stokes vector observations of solar spicules and a prominence in the He I 1083 nm multiplet carried out with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter. The observations show linear polarization profiles that are produced by scattering processes in the presence of a magnetic field. After a careful data reduction, we demonstrate the existence of extremely asymmetric Stokes V profiles in the spicular material that we are able to model with two magnetic components along the line of sight, and under the presence of atomic orientation in the energy levels that give rise to the multiplet. We discuss some possible scenarios that can generate the atomic orientation in spicules. We stress the importance of spectropolarimetric observations across the limb to distinguish such signals from observational artifacts.Comment: accepted for publication in Ap

    Removal of Spectro-Polarimetric Fringes by 2D Pattern Recognition

    We present a pattern-recognition based approach to the problem of removal of polarized fringes from spectro-polarimetric data. We demonstrate that 2D Principal Component Analysis can be trained on a given spectro-polarimetric map in order to identify and isolate fringe structures from the spectra. This allows us in principle to reconstruct the data without the fringe component, providing an effective and clean solution to the problem.     Systematic identification of phenotypically enriched loci using a patient network of genomic disorders

    Background Network medicine is a promising new discipline that combines systems biology approaches and network science to understand the complexity of pathological phenotypes. Given the growing availability of personalized genomic and phenotypic profiles, network models offer a robust integrative framework for the analysis of "omics" data, allowing the characterization of the molecular aetiology of pathological processes underpinning genetic diseases. Methods Here we make use of patient genomic data to exploit different network-based analyses to study genetic and phenotypic relationships between individuals. For this method, we analyzed a dataset of structural variants and phenotypes for 6,564 patients from the DECIPHER database, which encompasses one of the most comprehensive collections of pathogenic Copy Number Variations (CNVs) and their associated ontology-controlled phenotypes. We developed a computational strategy that identifies clusters of patients in a synthetic patient network according to their genetic overlap and phenotype enrichments. Results Many of these clusters of patients represent new genotype-phenotype associations, suggesting the identification of newly discovered phenotypically enriched loci (indicative of potential novel syndromes) that are currently absent from reference genomic disorder databases such as ClinVar, OMIM or DECIPHER itself. Conclusions We provide a high-resolution map of pathogenic phenotypes associated with their respective significant genomic regions and a new powerful tool for diagnosis of currently uncharacterized mutations leading to deleterious phenotypes and syndromes

    On the Magnetic Field Strength of Active Region Filaments

    We study the vector magnetic field of a filament observed over a compact Active Region Neutral Line. Spectropolarimetric data acquired with TIP-II (VTT, Tenerife, Spain) of the 10830 \AA spectral region provide full Stokes vectors which were analyzed using three different methods: magnetograph analysis, Milne-Eddington inversions and PCA-based atomic polarization inversions. The inferred magnetic field strengths in the filament are of the order of 600 - 700 G by all these three methods. Longitudinal fields are found in the range of 100 - 200 G whereas the transverse components become dominant, with fields as large as 500 - 600 G. We find strong transverse fields near the Neutral Line also at photospheric levels. Our analysis indicates that strong (higher than 500 G, but below kG) transverse magnetic fields are present in Active Region filaments. This corresponds to the highest field strengths reliably measured in these structures. The profiles of the Helium 10830 \AA lines observed in this Active Region filament are dominated by the Zeeman effect.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 9 pages, 4 figure

    Prevalence of depression during the COVID-19 outbreak: A meta-analysis of community-based studies

    Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic, declared on March 11, 2020, constitute an extraordinary health, social and economic global challenge. The impact on people''s mental health is expected to be high. This paper sought to systematically review community-based studies on depression conducted during the COVID-19 and estimate the pooled prevalence of depression. Method: We searched for cross-sectional, community-based studies listed on PubMed or Web of Science from January 1, 2020 to May 8, 2020 that reported prevalence of depression. A random effect model was used to estimate the pooled proportion of depression. Results: A total of 12 studies were included in the meta-analysis, with prevalence rates of depression ranging from 7.45% to 48.30%. The pooled prevalence of depression was 25% (95% CI: 18% - 33%), with significant heterogeneity between studies (I2 = 99.60%, p &lt; .001). Conclusions: Compared with a global estimated prevalence of depression of 3.44% in 2017, our pooled prevalence of 25% appears to be 7 times higher, thus suggesting an important impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on people's mental health. Addressing mental health during and after this global health crisis should be placed into the international and national public health agenda to improve citizens’ wellbeing

    Molecular elucidation of CO2 methanation over a highly active, selective and stable LaNiO3/CeO2-derived catalyst by in situ FTIR and NAP-XPS

    The CO2 methanation mechanism over the highly active (TOF=75.1 h−1), selective (>92%) and stable 10% LaNiO3/CeO2-derived catalyst is still unresolved. The surface of the catalyst is monitored under hydrogenation (H2), oxidizing (CO2) and CO2 methanation (H2 +CO2) conditions by near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) using synchrotron radiation. Meanwhile, the main reaction intermediates are identified by in situ FTIR analysis. NAP-XPS experiments confirm that LaNiO3 perovskite reduction leads to the ex-solution of Ni0 nanoparticles and Ni2+single bondCeO2−x and Ni2+single bondLa2O3 interfaces conformation, favouring the CO2 adsorption and the H2 dissociation/transfer. In situ FTIR experiments combined with the C1s spectra (NAP-XPS) suggest that the CO2 activation occurs on CeO2−x (oxygen vacancies and OH–) at low temperatures, in the form of bicarbonates; whereas, mono-/bidentate carbonates are formed on different strength La2O3 sites at increasing temperatures.
