    A quality of service assessment technique for large-scale management of multimedia flows

The goal is to devise a mechanism that allows a service provider to take action whenever poor quality of service is detected in the delivery of multimedia flows. Such procedure is fully automatic since it is based on a goodness-of-fit test between source and destination packet interarrival histograms. If the null hypothesis of the test is accepted the flow is marked as in good standing, otherwise it is marked as anomalous and the network management system should take action in response. The proposed technique is analyzed in terms of hardware complexity and bandwidth consumption.     Effect of Disorder on Ultrafast Exciton Dynamics Probed by Single Molecule Spectroscopy

    We present a single-molecule study unraveling the effect of static disorder on the vibrational-assisted ultrafast exciton dynamics in multichromophoric systems. For every single complex, we probe the initial exciton relaxation process by an ultrafast pump-probe approach and the coupling to vibrational modes by emission spectra, while fluorescence lifetime analysis measures the amount of static disorder. Exploiting the wide range of disorder found from complex to complex, we demonstrate that static disorder accelerates the dephasing and energy relaxation rate of the exciton

    Accuracy of CT-based attenuation correction in bone imaging with PET/CT

    Proceeding of: 2007 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (NSS'07), Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, Oct. 27 - Nov. 3, 2007PET/CT has become the most comprehensive diagnostic tool in oncology imaging providing improved lesion identification and localization. Bone is a common site of metastasis and the quantitative accuracy of PET images in bone tissue is important for assessing response to therapy. The use of CT images for attenuation correction is becoming a standard procedure in these scanners. However the impact of CT-based attenuation correction (CTAC) on the accuracy of PET tracer uptake values measured in bone has not been carefully evaluated, having only been carefully studied in soft tissue. We investigated the accuracy of CTAC on PET bone images by comparing the attenuation coefficients with PET transmission scans. For this, we imaged frozen bovine femur segments in a 20x20 cm cylindrical phantom. Different regions of the bones in both images were segmented by using thresholding and erosion methods to get equivalent volume masks. Differences in linear attenuation coefficients between the two images were then calculated. We repeated this analysis using patient images from the same patient imaged on the GE Advance PET scanner and the GE Discovery STE PET/CT scanner. The impact of the errors in the linear attenuation coefficients on PET SUV measurements was evaluated by simulations using the patent images with known bone disease and elevated levels of FDG uptake in bone (e.g. SUV = 5) at disease sites.     Modeling the acquisition front-end in high resolution gamma-ray imaging

    The availability of synthetic realistic data eases design optimization, algorithm evaluation and verification of any digital system where a significant amount of digital signal processing is performed. The evolution of positron emission tomography cameras towards continuous sampling of individual position-sensitive photomultiplier anodes with processing algorithms implemented on digital programmable logic devices creates a new framework where new approaches to the Îł-event detection are possible. We have developed a system model of the acquisition chain, including multi-layer phoswich, photomultiplier, front-end analog electronics, data acquisition and digital processing. This processing includes estimation algorithms for the most relevant event parameters: energy, layer-of-interaction, time picking-off and event location. The selected simulation platform couples gently to digital hardware simulation tools, in such a way that implemented models may generate real-like stimuli for the digital system under development.     A Bioactive Extract Rich in Triterpenic Acid and Polyphenols from Olea europaea Promotes Systemic Immunity and Protects Atlantic Salmon Smolts Against Furunculosis

    In the present study, the modulation of the transcriptional immune response (microarray analysis) in the head kidney (HK) of the anadromous fish Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) fed a diet supplemented with an olive fruit extract (AQUOLIVE®) was evaluated. At the end of the trial (133 days), in order to investigate the immunomodulatory properties of the phytogenic tested against a bacterial infection, an in vivo challenge with Aeromonas salmonicida was performed. A total number of 1,027 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (805 up- and 222 downregulated) were found when comparing the transcriptomic profiling of the HK from fish fed the control and AQUOLIVE® diets. The HK transcripteractome revealed an expression profile that mainly favored biological processes related to immunity. Particularly, the signaling of i-kappa B kinase/NF-kappa and the activation of leukocytes, such as granulocytes and neutrophils degranulation, were suggested to be the primary actors of the innate immune response promoted by the tested functional feed additive in the HK. Moreover, the bacterial challenge with A. salmonicida that lasted 12 days showed that the cumulative survival was higher in fish fed the AQUOLIVE® diet (96.9 ± 6.4%) than the control group (60.7 ± 13.5%). These results indicate that the dietary supplementation of AQUOLIVE® at the level of 0.15% enhanced the systemic immune response and reduced the A. salmonicida cumulative mortality in Atlantic salmon smolts.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Experimental adiabatic vortex ratchet effect in Nb films with asymmetric pinning trap

    Nb films grown on top of an array of asymmetric pinning centers show a vortex ratchet effect. A net flow of vortices is induced when the vortex lattice is driven by fluctuating forces on an array of pinning centers without reflection symmetry. This effect occurs in the adiabatic regime and it could be mimiced only by reversible DC driven forces

    New embedded digital front-end for high resolution PET scanner

    This work describes a new digital front-end for a high-resolution low-cost animal PET scanner which is currently under development. The advances in flexibility and size of modern FPGAs together with the release of new tools enable the integration of most of the front-end electronics in a single FPGA. The implemented system includes a small 32-bit RISC processor, several peripherals attached to the internal buses and a special DSP unit closely attached to the processor which is dedicated to the detection of the gamma events.     Experimental vortex ratchet effect in nanostructured superconductors

    Superconducting Nb thin films were grown on different arrays of triangle-shape metallic islands. The vortex lattice dynamics could be strongly modified by these asymmetric vortex traps. These asymmetric pinning potentials lead to a rectification effect on the vortex motion: Injecting an ac supercurrent on the sample yields a net dc vortex flow. This vortex ratchet ffect is adiabatic and reversible: The effect is frequency independent and the polarity of the dc voltage output could be tuned by the applied magnetic fields and the input ac currents

    Tribological properties of hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles or graphene nanoplatelets blended with an ionic liquid as additives of an ester base oil

    Antifriction synergies between an ionic liquid (IL) and nanopowders as additives of an ester base oil were analysed at rolling conditions. For this aim, two nanodispersions based on hybrid combinations of hexagonal boron nitride nanoparticles (h-BN) or graphene nanoplatelets (GnP) with tri(butyl) ethylphosphonium diethylphosphate ionic liquid as additives in triisotridecyltrimellitate (TTM) base oil and the mixture of TTM and IL were analysed using two tribometer techniques. Film thickness characterisation and tribological tests were performed at rolling conditions [5% slide-roll-ratio (SRR)], under 50N and at operating temperatures of 30, 50 and 80°C. Stribeck curves showed that friction coefficients for the prepared lubricants are lower than those found for the TTM, being the best friction behaviour for the hybrid GnP nanolubricant.
