Viral Vaccines and CTL Response
Immune induction by successful vaccine formulations seems to involve stimulation of both humoral and cellular arms of immunity. Nevertheless, CD8+ CTLs are of critical relevance in the context of intracellular infection and tumor for many reasons. The task of exerting antipathogen activity by CD8+ T cells, which principally function to control and eradicate intracellular pathogens, is enabled by constitutive expression of MHC class-I molecules on all tissue types. CTL induction offers hope for vaccines against pathogens that are resistant to neutralizing activity. This review discusses the mechanism of immune induction by some successful vaccines and based on the accrued evidence suggests ideas for improved design of CTL-inducing vaccines

Studies on Cobalt(III) Metallosurfactants. Kinetics and Mechanism of Reduction of Cobalt(III) by Iron(II) in Aqueous Acid Medium
The kinetics and mechanism of reduction of the surfactant complex ions, cis-chloro/bromo(dodecylamine)(triethylenetetramine)cobalt(III) by iron(II) in aqueous solution were studied at 303, 308 and 313 K by spectrophotometry under pseudo-first-order conditions using an excess of the reductant. The second-order rate constant increases with cobalt(III) concentration and the presence of aggregation of the complex itself alters the reaction rate. The reductions are acid-independent in the range [H+] = 0.05-0.25mol dm−3. Variation of ionic strength (μ) influences the reaction rate. Activation and thermodynamic parameters have been computed. It is suggested that the reaction of Fe2+(aq) with the cobalt(III) complex proceeds by an inner-sphere mechanism. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) values of these surfactant metal complexes in aqueous solution were obtained from conductance measurements. Specific conductivity data (at 303, 308 and 313 K) served for the evaluation of the temperature-dependent CMC and the standard Gibbs energy of micellization (ΔGm0
Development of an Electroless Method to Deposit Corrosion-Resistant Silicate Layers on Metallic Substrates
A novel electroless method for depositing corrosion-resistant silicate layers on metallic substrates from aqueous solutions has been developed. The silicate layer was deposited from an aqueous solution of sodium silicate (3.22 weight ratio sodium silicate, 37.5% solution in water from PQ Corporation) and sodium borohydride. The technique is demonstrated by forming a passive film on galvanized steel. Deposition parameters such as concentration of the bath, temperature, and pH have been optimized based on the corrosion characteristics of the final coating. Studies on the coating reveal the formation of a very thin (5 nm) zinc disilicate layer followed by a much thicker (500 nm) silica layer. Accelerated corrosion tests showed that the silicate coatings have higher corrosion resistance and better stability when compared to chrome passivates. Silica coatings developed by this method show promise as an alternative to chrome passivation for corrosion protection
Game, Set, and Conflict: Evaluating Conflict and Game Frames in Indian Election News Coverage
News frames refer to how journalists organize and present information to
convey a particular message or perspective to their readers. When covering
elections, these frames shape how the public perceives electoral issues and
events. This study examines how news frames, especially conflict and game
frames, were employed by news organizations in India to cover the 2014 and 2019
general elections. We analyzed how the frames varied temporally, by region, and
by the party being featured in the articles. Key findings include (i) conflict
and games frames are employed more often in highly electorally consequential
states (higher legislative seats) than in other states (ii) articles featuring
challenger parties are more likely to have conflict and game frame articles
than those featuring incumbent parties (iii) the national parties (BJP,
Bharatiya Janata Party) and (INC, Indian National Congress) disproportionately
feature in articles having conflict frames. Overall, our analysis highlights
the evolving nature of election campaigns and how conflict and game frames play
a major part in them.Comment: ICWS
Scientific Information on Gulf of Mannar - A Bibliography
Gulf of Mannar in the southeast coast of India extends from Rameswaram Island in the north to
Kanyakumari in the south. It has a chain of 21 islands stretching from Mandapam to Tuticorin to a distance
of 140 km along the coast. Each one of the islands is located anywhere between 2 and 10 km from the
mainland. The Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve was set up on 18th February 1989 jointly by the
Government of India and the state of Tamilnadu. The government of Tamilnadu in G.O. M.S. No 962 dated 10th
September 1986 notified under section 35(1) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 the intention to declare
the 21 islands as Marine National Park for the purpose of protecting marine wildlife and its environment
including depths of 3.5 fathoms on the bay side to 5 fathoms on the seaward side.
The compilation of all available scientific literature in the form of an annotated bibliography of the Gulf
of Mannar biosphere reserve has brought to light the existence of nearly 3,000 publications up to date. This
covers the literature published from as early as 1864 to the current year. A large number of publications in
the first half of the 20th century have brought out information on the variety of fauna and flora found in the
Gulf of Mannar, their biology and ecology. A lot of emphasis on the fish and fisheries research has been
given only in the second half of the 20th century. Emphasis is being given on biochemical aspects of flora and
fauna in the later part of the 20th century and at present
Spatial Privacy Pricing: The Interplay between Privacy, Utility and Price in Geo-Marketplaces
A geo-marketplace allows users to be paid for their location data. Users
concerned about privacy may want to charge more for data that pinpoints their
location accurately, but may charge less for data that is more vague. A buyer
would prefer to minimize data costs, but may have to spend more to get the
necessary level of accuracy. We call this interplay between privacy, utility,
and price \emph{spatial privacy pricing}. We formalize the issues
mathematically with an example problem of a buyer deciding whether or not to
open a restaurant by purchasing location data to determine if the potential
number of customers is sufficient to open. The problem is expressed as a
sequential decision making problem, where the buyer first makes a series of
decisions about which data to buy and concludes with a decision about opening
the restaurant or not. We present two algorithms to solve this problem,
including experiments that show they perform better than baselines.Comment: 10 pages, SIGSPATIAL'2
Environmental monitoring using biomarkers in relevance to heavy metal pollution in coastal areas of the Gulf of Mannar
794-802Marine organisms are vulnerable to harsh environment where fluctuation in physicochemical conditions including salinity and tides are common. These organisms over the period have evolved different mechanisms to maintain the physiological conditions of the body through metabolic activities. In the present work, we studied accumulation of about 10 heavy metals in about 20 marine organisms from the Gulf of Mannar, Southeast coast of India and also explored the passable relationship between distribution of these inorganic metals and biochemical response of these organisms. The effect on the accumulation of metals over the metabolism in the marine animals was evaluated by the level of antioxidant response. Concentration of metal in the body tissues was analyzed using ICP-AES. Interestingly, it was also observed that genotoxic potential pollutants were less or negligible in the selected sites. Tail DNA in the muscle cells was observed to be <5%. Our study concludes that fishes from the two areas are not heavily burdened with metals, but pollutants should be monitored periodically to avoid excessive intake of trace metals by humans due to bioaccumulation. The work concludes that a multiparameter analysis should be followed to study the ecological status of the aquatic environment
Novel PEMFC Cathodes Prepared by Pulse Deposition
A pulse electrodeposition method of preparing thin platinum catalyst layers for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathodes has been developed through surface activation of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) by a wetting agent. The performance of the catalyst layer was optimized by wetting agent type, immersion time in the wetting agent, and pulse deposition parameters such as total charge density, peak current density, and duty cycle ratio. The Toff time played a more important role than the Ton time in determining the electrode characteristics such as high concentration of Pt, smaller particle size, and loading. Pt cathodes prepared using a peak current density of 400 mA/cm2 with a duty cycle of 10.7% and total charge density of 6 C/cm2 resulted in a thin platinum catalyst layer (1.92 µm) and uniformly distributed platinum nanoparticles (3–4 nm) on the GDL surface. Novel cathodes with Pt loading of 0.33 mg/cm2 prepared in the present study exhibited 746 mA/cm2 at 0.7 V
