    Plasma Nitriding of 90CrMoV8 Tool Steel for the Enhancement of Hardness and Corrosion Resistance

    The aim of the study is to apply a plasma nitriding process to the 90CrMoV8 steel commonly employed in wood machining, and to determine its efficiency to improve both mechanical and electrochemical properties of the surface. Treatments were performed at a constant N2:H2 gas mixture and by varying the temperature and process duration. The structural and morphological properties of nitrided layers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with EDS microanalyses. Surface hardening and hardness profiles were evaluated by micro hardness measurements. To simulate the woodmachining conditions, electrochemical tests were carried out with an oak wood electrolyte with the purpose of understanding the effects of the nitriding treatment on the corrosion resistance of the tool in operation. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed the presence of both γ′ (Fe4N) and ε (Fe2–3N) nitrides with a predominance of the ε phase. Moreover, α-Fe (110), γ′ and ε diffraction peaks were shifted to lower angles suggesting the development of compressive stresses in the post nitrided steel. As a result, it was shown that nitriding allowed a significant hardening of steel with hardness values higher than 1200 HV. The diffusion layers were always composed of an outer compound layer and a hardened bulk layer which thickness was half of the total diffusion layer one.No white layer was observed. Similarly, no traces of chromium nitrides were detected. The temperature seemed to be a parameter more influent than the process duration on the morphological properties of the nitrided layer, while it had no real influence on their crystallinity. Finally, the optimal nitriding conditions to obtain a thick and hard diffusion layer are 500 °C for 10 h. On the other hand, to verify the effect of these parameters on the corrosion resistance, potentiodynamic polarization tests were carried out in an original “wood juice” electrolyte. After corrosion, surface was then observed at the SEM scale. Electrochemical study indicated that the untreated steel behaved as a passive material. Although the very noble character of steel was somewhat mitigated and the corrosion propensity increased for nitrided steels, the passive-like nature of themodified surfacewas preserved. For the same optimized parameters as those deduced from the mechanical characterization (500 °C, 10 h), surface presented, in addition to a huge surface hardening, a high corrosion resistance.Regional Council of Burgundy and EGID

    Modulation of the structural information in shape-defined heterocyclic strands: the case of a (pyridine-hydrazone)₂pyrazine ligand

    Metal ions (Ag+^{+}, Cd2+^{2+}, Eu3+^{3+}, Sm3+^{3+}) and protons can, through coordination and protonation, modulate in three specific ways the structural information contained in the pyrazine-based heterocyclic strand LL (obtained from 2,5-bis(methylhydrazino)pyrazine and 2 equivalents of 2-pyridinecarboxaldehyde), thus generating two linear rod-like conformations and a bent one.     Air quality and mental illness: Role of bioaerosols, causal mechanisms and research priorities

    BACKGROUND: Poor air quality can both trigger and aggravate lung and heart conditions, as well as affecting child development. It can even lead to neurological and mental health problems. However, the precise mechanisms by which air pollution affect human health are not well understood. AIMS: To promote interdisciplinary dialogue and better research based on a critical summary of evidence on air quality and health, with an emphasis on mental health, and to do so with a special focus on bioaerosols as a common but neglected air constituent. METHOD: A rapid narrative review and interdisciplinary expert consultation, as is recommended for a complex and rapidly changing field of research. RESULTS: The research methods used to assess exposures and outcomes vary across different fields of study, resulting in a disconnect in bioaerosol and health research. We make recommendations to enhance the evidence base by standardising measures of exposure to both particulate matter in general and bioaerosols specifically. We present methods for assessing mental health and ideal designs. There is less research on bioaerosols, and we provide specific ways of measuring exposure to these. We suggest research designs for investigating causal mechanisms as important intermediate steps before undertaking larger-scale and definitive studies. CONCLUSIONS: We propose methods for exposure and outcome measurement, as well as optimal research designs to inform the development of standards for undertaking and reporting research and for future policy

    The Molecular and Spatial Epidemiology of Typhoid Fever in Rural Cambodia.

    Typhoid fever, caused by the bacterium Salmonella Typhi, is an endemic cause of febrile disease in Cambodia. The aim of this study was to better understand the epidemiology of pediatric typhoid fever in Cambodia. We accessed routine blood culture data from Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Siem Reap province between 2007 and 2014, and performed whole genome sequencing (WGS) on the isolated bacteria to characterize the S. Typhi population. The resulting phylogenetic information was combined with conventional epidemiological approaches to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of S. Typhi and population-level risk factors for reported disease. During the study period, there were 262 cases of typhoid within a 100 km radius of AHC, with a median patient age of 8.2 years (IQR: 5.1-11.5 years). The majority of infections occurred during the rainy season, and commune incidences as high as 11.36/1,000 in children aged <15 years were observed over the study period. A population-based risk factor analysis found that access to water within households and increasing distance from Tonle Sap Lake were protective. Spatial mapping and WGS provided additional resolution for these findings, and confirmed that proximity to the lake was associated with discrete spatiotemporal disease clusters. We confirmed the dominance of MDR H58 S. Typhi in this population, and found substantial evidence of diversification (at least seven sublineages) within this single lineage. We conclude that there is a substantial burden of pediatric typhoid fever in rural communes in Cambodia. Our data provide a platform for additional population-based typhoid fever studies in this location, and suggest that this would be a suitable setting in which to introduce a school-based vaccination programme with Vi conjugate vaccines

    A novel ciprofloxacin-resistant subclade of H58 Salmonella Typhi is associated with fluoroquinolone treatment failure.

    The interplay between bacterial antimicrobial susceptibility, phylogenetics and patient outcome is poorly understood. During a typhoid clinical treatment trial in Nepal, we observed several treatment failures and isolated highly fluoroquinolone-resistant Salmonella Typhi (S. Typhi). Seventy-eight S. Typhi isolates were genome sequenced and clinical observations, treatment failures and fever clearance times (FCTs) were stratified by lineage. Most fluoroquinolone-resistant S. Typhi belonged to a specific H58 subclade. Treatment failure with S. Typhi-H58 was significantly less frequent with ceftriaxone (3/31; 9.7%) than gatifloxacin (15/34; 44.1%)(Hazard Ratio 0.19, p=0.002). Further, for gatifloxacin-treated patients, those infected with fluoroquinolone-resistant organisms had significantly higher median FCTs (8.2 days) than those infected with susceptible (2.96) or intermediately resistant organisms (4.01)(pS. Typhi clade internationally, but there are no data regarding disease outcome with this organism. We report an emergent new subclade of S. Typhi-H58 that is associated with fluoroquinolone treatment failure

    Fiducial Reference Measurement for Greenhouse Gases (FRM4GHG)

    The Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) and the InfraredWorking Group of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC-IRWG) are two groundbased networks that provide the retrieved concentrations of up to 30 atmospheric trace gases, using solar absorption spectrometry. Both networks provide reference measurements for the validation of satellites and models. TCCON concentrates on long-lived greenhouse gases (GHGs) for carbon cycle studies and validation. The number of sites is limited, and the geographical coverage is uneven, covering mainly Europe and the USA. A better distribution of stations is desired to improve the representativeness of the data for various atmospheric conditions and surface conditions and to cover a large latitudinal distribution. The two successive Fiducial Reference Measurements for Greenhouse Gases European Space Agency projects (FRM4GHG and FRM4GHG2) aim at the assessment of several low-cost portable instruments for precise measurements of GHGs to complement the existing groundbased sites. Several types of low spectral resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers manufactured by Bruker, namely an EM27/SUN, a Vertex70, a fiber-coupled IRCube, and a Laser Heterodyne spectro-Radiometer (LHR) developed by UK Rutherford Appleton Laboratory are the participating instruments to achieve the Fiducial Reference Measurements (FRMs) status. Intensive side-by-side measurements were performed using all four instruments next to the Bruker IFS 125HR high spectral resolution FTIR, performing measurements in the NIR (TCCON configuration) and MIR (NDACC configuration) spectral range.This research and APC were funded by the European Space Agency’s FRM Programme under grant agreement no. 4000117640/16/I-LG and 4000136108/21/I-DT-lr.     Differential effects of chlorinated and oxidized phospholipids in vascular tissue:implications for neointima formation

    The presence of inflammatory cells and MPO (myeloperoxidase) in the arterial wall after vascular injury could increase neointima formation by modification of phospholipids. The present study investigates how these phospholipids, in particular oxidized and chlorinated species, are altered within injured vessels and how they affect VSMC (vascular smooth muscle cell) remodelling processes. Vascular injury was induced in C57BL/6 mice and high fat-fed ApoE-/- (apolipoprotein E) mice by wire denudation and ligation of the left carotid artery (LCA). Neointimal and medial composition was assessed using immunohistochemistry and ESI-MS. Primary rabbit aortic SMCs (smooth muscle cells) were utilized to examine the effects of modified lipids on VSMC proliferation, viability and migration at a cellular level. Neointimal area, measured as intima-to-media ratio, was significantly larger in wire-injured ApoE-/- mice (3.62±0.49 compared with 0.83±0.25 in C57BL/6 mice, n=3) and there was increased oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) infiltration and elevated plasma MPO levels. Relative increases in lysophosphatidylcholines and unsaturated phosphatidylcholines (PCs) were also observed in wire-injured ApoE-/- carotid arteries. Chlorinated lipids had no effect on VSMC proliferation, viability or migration whereas chronic incubation with oxidized phospholipids stimulated proliferation in the presence of fetal calf serum [154.8±14.2% of viable cells at 1 μM PGPC (1-palmitoyl-2-glutaroyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) compared with control, n=6]. In conclusion, ApoE-/- mice with an inflammatory phenotype develop more neointima in wire-injured arteries and accumulation of oxidized lipids in the vessel wall may propagate this effect

    High success and low mortality rates with non-invasive ventilation in influenza A H1N1 patients in a tertiary hospital

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In 2009, an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by influenza A H1N1 virus occurred worldwide. Some patients required Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission. The use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in these patients is controversial, as the aerosol dispersion may contaminate the environment and health-care co-workers.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Describe the respiratory profile, the mortality rate, and the benefit of using NIV in patients with confirmed diagnosis of influenza AH1N1 who were admitted in the ICU during the year 2009.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 1, 401 cases of influenza A H1N1 were confirmed in our hospital by real-time RT-PCR in 2009, and 20 patients were admitted to the ICU. The patients' ages ranged from 18 to 74 years (median of 42). Acute Respiratory Failure (ARF) was present in 70% of patients. The median Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score was 7 (range 7 to 25). Of the 14 patients who developed ARF, 85.7% needed NIV and 14% needed invasive MV at admission. Our success rate (41.6%) with NIV was higher than that described by others. The hospital mortality rate was 2.1%. When influenza A H1N1 arrived in Brazil, the disease was already on endemic alert in other countries. The population was already aware of the symptoms and the health-care system of the treatment. This allowed patients to be properly and promptly treated for influenza A H1N1, while health-care workers took protective measures to avoid contamination.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>In our study we found a high success and low mortality rates with non-invasive ventilation in patients with influenza A H1N1.</p
