The surge in maritime trade is leading to large scale deployment of high-speed displacement ships by all nations. Cargo vessels are designed for a voyage in pre-determined routes at consistent speeds. On the other hand, high-speed displacement vessel engines designed with a capability to cater for top speeds are under-utilised during their normal course of operation. This sub-optimal utilisation impacts efficiency and increases emissions. In this study, a most favourable stern flap is designed for reducing the energy efficiency design index of a typical high-speed displacement vessel with a slender hull. CFD simulations and experimental model testing were conducted for 12 different stern flap configurations for determining most favourable flap design in the Froude no of 0.17-0.48. Performance of the most favourable stern flap was established by calculating, energy efficiency design index (EEDI) and fuel consumption based on typical operating profile. NOx, VOC and PM emissions were estimated in with and without flap condition. Studies demonstrated that the stern flap reduced effective power demand, average fuel consumption and emissions by about 8 per cent, which when considered for the ship’s operating life cycle, are significant. The most favourable stern flap reduced EEDI by 3.74 units and 1.98 units as compared to the bare hull condition and the required EEDI respectively, thereby demonstrating that EEDI could be used as an index to indicate stern flap efficiency

In automatic numeral digit recognition system, feature selection is most important factor for achieving high recognition performance. To achieve this, the present paper proposed system for isolated handwritten numeral recognition using number of contours, skeleton features, Number of watersheds, and ratio between the numbers of foreground pixels in upper half part and lower half-part of the numerical digit image. Based on these features the present paper designed user-defined classification algorithm for handwritten digit recognition. To find the effectiveness of the proposed features, these features are given as an input for standard classification algorithms like k–nearest neighbor classifier, Support Vector Machines and other classification algorithms and evaluate the results.  The experimental result proves that the proposed features are well suited for handwritten digit recognition for both user and standard classification algorithms. The novelty of the proposed method is size invariant

The rapid growth of Internet and the fast emergence of multi-media applications over the past decades have led to new problems such as illegal copying, digital plagiarism, distribution and use of copyrighted digital data. Watermarking digital data for copyright protection is a current need of the community. For embedding watermarks, robust algorithms in die media will resolve copyright infringements. Therefore, to enhance the robustness, optimization techniques and deep neural network concepts are utilized. In this paper, the optimized Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is utilized for embedding the watermark. The optimization algorithm is a combination of Simulated Annealing (SA) and Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA). After performing the embedding process, the extraction is processed by deep neural network concept of Recurrent Neural Network based Long Short-Term Memory (RNN-LSTM). From the extraction process, the original image is obtained by this RNN-LSTM method. The experimental set up is carried out in the MATLAB platform. The performance metrics of PSNR, NC and SSIM are determined and compared with existing optimization and machine learning approaches. The results are achieved under various attacks to show the robustness of the proposed work

    Get PDF
Lung cancer is the most frequent malignant tumour with the highest mortality rate around the world, leading to greater than a million deaths annually. The number of deaths due to lung cancer is expected to increase to ten million deaths per year in 2030. The major risk factor for the development of lung cancer is cigarette smoking but relatively high rates of lung cancer occur among non-smoking women and 10-25% of lung cancer observed in never smokers. The lung cancer deaths occur in never smokers have been estimated to be the 7th leading cause of cancer mortality. This article mainly discusses the important etiological factors of lung cancer in never smokers such as the environmental factors, occupational exposure, history of lung disease, family history and genetic factors, unbalanced diet and high consumption of saturated fat, radiation exposure, socioeconomic status, and infections. Gender, obesity and metabolic syndrome, race and ethnicity and interstitial lung diseases also have effects on the development of lung cancer in never smokers

Background: Various adjuvants have been used in intrathecal anesthesia to avoid intraoperative visceral and somatic pain and prolong postoperative analgesia. Clonidine, partially selective α2-agonist, is being evaluated as a neuraxial adjuvant with intrathecal bupivacaine. The objective of the study was to evaluate and compare safety and efficacy of intrathecal clonidine as adjuvant to bupivacaine with control normal saline. Methods: American Society of Anesthesiologist grade 1 and 2 patients (60 patients) were randomly divided into two groups of 30 patients each for lower limb surgeries. Study group injected with intrathecal 3ml of 0.5% Bupivacaine heavy (15mg) + 1µg/kg of clonidine and control group injected with 3ml of 0.5% Bupivacaine heavy (15mg) + equivalent dose of normal saline. The onset and duration of sensory and motor block, duration of analgesia, and the incidence of side effects in both groups were observed and compared. Results: Time for 2 segment regressions in study group was 186.17±25.92 minutes compared to control was 103.20±19.15 minutes (p value<0.001). Total duration of analgesia in control was 226.50±35.69 minutes and in the study group was 465.67±100.37 minutes (p value<0.001). The average duration of motor block in control group was 181.17±26.12 minutes compared to study group was 217.80±41.51 minutes (p value<0.001). The small dose of intrathecal clonidine is not significantly associated with systemic side effects such as bradycardia and hypotension. Conclusions: Clonidine added to bupivacaine for intrathecal anesthesia effectively increases the duration of sensory block, duration of motor block and duration of analgesia and does not produce any significant hemodynamic changes. No significant side effects are associated with it
