Comparative Study Between Smooth and Rough Surface of Frictional Force in Mechanics Laboratory at Wolaita Sodo University

    Get PDF
Friction is a resisting force that acts as along the tangent to two surfaces in contact when one body slides over or attempts to slide across another.  Friction plays a major role in our daily life. There are different types of friction: static, kinetic, deformation, rolling and the like. But the aim of this project  is not to study the type of friction, the project focus on comparative study of frictional force between smooth and rough surfaces and to identify the problems that cause the students’ experimental value variation with in the same position of theoretical condition that are discussed in the classroom. For this study, the data were collected by the laboratory experimental values that were recorded by the students in mechanics of frictional forces at W.S.U. This collected data were analyzed in order to compare the experimental value of the smooth surface with the value of the rough surfaces given in the secondary data. Finally, the data is presented to show the causes that hinder the students to find to meet the coherence between the theoretical knowledge and the experimental value Keywords: frictional force, rough, smooth DOI: 10.7176/APTA/79-02 Publication date:September 30th 201

Economic and Health Benefits of Breastfeeding: A Review

The aim of this paper is to review the health, economic and other benefits of breastfeeding to the children, mother, community and country. The review was undertaken by using different tools as sources of information for gathering ideas on issues of economic, health and social benefits of breastfeeding. Report indicated that Sub-optimum breastfeeding, especially non-exclusive breastfeeding in the first 6 months of life, results in 1.4 million deaths and 10% of disease burden in children younger than 5 years. Breastfeeding for a period of two years is more cost-effective than the alternative of having to purchase artificial or animal milk, which contributes to about 15%-20% of the health budget in some countries. Breastfeeding lead to a 13% reduction in deaths of children under five if infants were exclusively breastfed for 6 months and continued to be breastfed up to two years. Optimal breastfeeding of children under two years of age has the potential to prevent 1.4 million deaths in children under five in the developing world annually. As economic impact of breastfeeding for three illnesses otitis media, gastroenteritis, and NEC found that increasing the proportion of children who were breastfed and would have saved an estimated $3.6 billion annually interms of both direct and indirect costs. Vessel traffic service as a maritime security tool: vessel traffic management information systems (VTMIS) in Ghana

    Get PDF
The dissertation is an assessment of the role of the VTMIS in enhancing efforts to bring down maritime security in the threats in the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa focusing on Ghana. According to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is implemented by a Competent Authority to improve the safety and efficiency of vessel traffic and to protect the environment. Technological development today has led to significant improvements in vessel traffic service. Vessel Traffic Management Information Service is the integration of Management information systems to improve the quality of vessel traffic services. Vessel traffic services essentially are used for information services, navigational assistance services, traffic organisation services, and similar allied services. Increasingly, threats to maritime safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea area are becoming major issues in the world. This study investigated the role of the VTMIS in Ghana in enhancing and combating maritime security threat such as piracy, smuggling and trafficking, in the Gulf of Guinea area. The study collected primary qualitative data from respondents from agencies in Ghana that uses information from the VTMIS for the assessment. It also relied on secondary data from the IMO and Ghana Maritime Authority on incidence of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. The study revealed that VTMIS in Ghana contributes significantly to security of offshore installations in Ghana. It also reveal that Ghana’s VTMIS contributes significantly in monitoring and reporting maritime security issues in the Gulf of Guinea area

    Haima in Hebrews

Problem. The focus of the dissertation is the significance of the term αἷμα (“blood”) in the Epistle to the Hebrews and how the author of Hebrews uses the term to formulate the argument and message of the Epistle. The dissertation traces the scholarly blood debate involving blood as life or death which began in the last decade of the nineteenth century and eventually fizzled out in the mid-1950s. Recognition of the ambivalence of blood, symbolizing both life and death, is necessary to understand the message of Hebrews. Method. The dissertation provides a discussion of the concept of blood in the OT and ANE environments, demonstrating that in the OT the role of blood in the context of the cult as a means of atonement is unique. Results. References to blood are also classified and assessed from the works of both Philo and Josephus, Rabbinic literature, the Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, the Qumran community, and the NT. The final chapter of the dissertation deals with the meaning of blood in the Epistle itself, where the author of Hebrews uses his rhetorical skill to present blood as a most powerful medium of approach to God. Conclusions. According to the Epistle, blood sanctifies, purifies/cleanses, consecrates/inaugurates, effects perfection, seals covenants, and brings about decisive purgation. When it is despised, it destroys by death. Blood, when used with the term σάρζ (“flesh”), confirms the true humanity of Christ. Blood constitutes a Leitmotif in the Epistle to encompass the atoning work of Christ, who as High Priest shed His blood vicariously to eradicate sin, cleanse the conscience, and save humankind

Analysis of urban households’ preference for informal access to residential land in Minna, Nigeria

    Get PDF
Over the years, the urban land markets in Nigeria have been grappling with conflicts between the formal and informal institutions who have remained the dominant players. Despite the provision of the Land Use Act of 1978, which vested in the states, the power to hold and administer all lands within their territorial boundaries, interests are still being transferred informally. These transactions continue defying all risks associated with insecure tenure. The purpose of this study therefore, is to investigate the factors responsible for the choice of households’ access to land through informal channels. Data was obtained through questionnaire from 362 land owners and analysed using descriptive statistics and factor analysis techniques. The results revealed that, households’ preferences for informal access to residential land are influenced by socio-economic factors with 37.9% variance, inefficiency in the urban land administration with 21.2% and planning and development control issues with 17.7% variations respectively. Thus, the main conclusion of the study is that the predominant influence of these factors on the urban land market will continue to sustain the informality of land access in Minna. The study recommends the decentralisation of land administrative system and reduction in the planning standards to enhanced formal land access. Keywords: Urban Households, Informal Access, Residential Land, Insecure Tenure Factor
